I just finished reading the Book, "Joe: His Fight For Life." It was written by his mother, Lena Roth. It's the first book I've read in a while and I'd recommend it to all Cal fans. In 1975, Cal had that magical season after Joe Roth took over the starting job as a junior, and Cal lost only one league game to UCLA. They had some truly great players like Muncie, Walker, and Rivera, and it's a shame their only loss was to UCLA who got to go to the Rose Bowl. The book lets you relive one of the best seasons in Cal football history, but more importantly, it tells the story of a remarkable player, Joe Roth, and how he had to deal with his cancer when it came back his senior year. I graduated high school in '77, the year he died, and I remember the shock of hearing about it, but that's the way Joe Roth wanted it. He wanted to keep his struggle private and it's amazing that he played in the Japan Bowl, showcasing some of the best college players, one month before he died. He played half the game, and completed all but one pass. This story also will serve as a reminder that we as fans sometime forget when we get so focused on winning; that these are college kids that have more on their minds than just football, and they are just starting their adult lives and living away from home for the first time. I highly recommend the book, but as you can imagine it's hard to hold back the tears.
