Blaine Taylor from Old Dominion - a darkhorse candidate

I think Blaine Taylor at ODU is a darkhorse candidate. He is a MIke Montgomery protege whose contract has a special opt out for the Stanford job (he was an assistant there). But the word is that he likes the Bay Area a lot. He averaged 20 wins at year at Montana and then turned around the ODU program and has averaged 22 wins in his last four years there. Sooner or later, a major conference team will pick him up.

Not familiar with him, but he's a good example that there are probably very many qualified and enticing candidates out there that are not well known to us. If we limit our search to just those more local candidates, we are being too restrictive. It has to be someone that really wants to coach at CAL too and we are not privy to the coaches who might be pounding on Sandy Barbour's door. We have to trust that she and the other CAL officials who are involved in the selection are doing their homework and will be very diligent in the hiring process.

With Sandy Barbour coming from Notre Dame and all, I think she'll do a thorough job of selecting the best fit for CAL as we can rest assured that by letting Braun go, she understands we need a coach who can get us to the next level in hopefully a short amount of time like Tedford has done. I have my favorite choices of the names I've heard thrown around, but I wasn't that familiar with Tedford so the new BB coach doesn't necessarily have to be a name I recognize. I'm sure whomever it is will come with a great resume.

How many people knew of Bob McKillop? It's amazing what Davidson is doing right now as this year's NCAA cinderella story.

Looks like S.Barbour has narrowed it down to Randy Bennett or Mark Fox, although there's a report that Bennett from WSU is still online.

Mark Fox is an under understudy of Trent Green. I live in Carson City, NV and i'm extremely familiar with Nevada Basketball. Let me give you a few pluses and minuses.

Pluses Great recruiter - this year alone he was able to recruit 2 players in the ESPN 150 including a McDonalds All American. He's also very talented in recruiting guys from the east coast. This is important because he's the coach of the Nevada Woflpack, not UNLV.

Excellent Halftime coach - Although his teams seem to be sluggesh out of the gate, coach Fox always seems to make great adjustments at halftime.

Good Defensive Coach - He always recruits offensive guys and teaches them to be good defenders.

Minuses Odd personality - he never smiles and doesn't seem to have alot of fun. His demeanor is all business... this might not be a minus, i personally like a personallity now and then.

That's it!

There's a report saying Braun might get hired by the Rice Owls. They went 0-16 this year and only won 3 games overall. The Conference USA has some pretty good teams, including possible national champion Memphis if they can beat KU tonight. I'll be happy for Braun and that would be a good opportunity to resurrect that team if he gets that job. It looks like the CAL coaching change will work out to be the best for everybody. Next season should be fun.
