Sounds like Stanfard has a lot of problems going on over there. Johnson's contract wasn't secured so he up and left for LSU. The article said they can't reach the Stanfard A.D. for comment. You have to wonder if they were hoping he would leave so they could make Montgomery an offer to come back? Montgomery's contract with CAL is already signed, sealed and delivered? Right? We don't have to worry about Stanfard getting the last laugh by swooping in and stealing Montgomery at the 11th hour? Do we? This is CAL we are talking about, so we know stuff happens to us that defies all logic.

Somebody make an official statement, please!

Never mind, right after posting this I played our voice mail and there's a recorded message from Mike Montgomery saying he is excited about being the new coach at CAL and he can't wait to join us at Haas Pavillion next year in saying "GO BEARS." It must be a done deal. SO who's going to be Stanford's coach. Braun is already taken, right?

Couldn't happen to a more deserving crowd. Between that IDIOT Bowlsby and their "we'll pay you peanuts" attitude towards coaching, Furd is in big-time trouble. The *real* problem is that Furd lacks the commitment to be a Pac-10 school. They simply can't keep up and need to switch to the WAC or even the Ivy League.

Their record over the last 20 years would suggest otherwise. I think we'd all be pretty pleased if Cal was that successful.

Still...they screwed up not getting Johnson's extension done earlier. Go Bears!

It's not their record (in basketball, anyway) that's at issue, it's their commitment to excellence. You can't maintain a competitive program in the Pac 10 on what they're paying. That's been the problem for them in football AND (now) basketball. MM was (evidently) willing to work for a comparable pittance in his early years and that's why they got by with it for so long. It's unlikely that they will find another like him; at least one that won't bolt at the first opportunity as did Johnson.
