I really, really, enjoyed the Andrew Lloyd Webber theme this week on American Idol. I've seen a lot of his shows and his musical scores are wonderful. I know us old folks really enjoyed it, but I wonder if the young Idol audience, and even the young contestants, could really appreciate it. There's so many good songs they could have chosen, but I realize they probably aren't even familiar with them. I had to keep explaining to my kids how Lloyd Webber is such a legendary writer of musicals, and no... he didn't star as Quasimoto in Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame. My wife isn't as big an Idol fan as me, but she loves Phantom of the Opera, so she even enjoyed it this week.
I really thought Brooke was a goner after she messed up the first line in her song and asked the 500 piece orchestra to stop and start all over. Paula really scolded her for that, but I agree with Simon that it was the best thing to do and it made her look human and vulnerable, so a billion people who see themselves as being human and vulnerable too, ran to their phones to vote for her. What a great move!
I thought Jason would get canned for sure if Brooke didn't. He sang that "Memories" song from Cats like he was disinterested and admitted he hadn't seen any of the musicals. He should have come out in a cat costume, but he admitted he didn't even know the song was sung by a cat. With those long dreadlocks, I think he should have come out dressed like Jason and the Technocolor Argonauts with that big flowing dreamcoat, and sang one of those numbers. But he got by on his charm and made it to the next round.
Syesha was the best IMHO. She did not deserve to be in the bottom 2 as this was her element and she could be a big broadway star. She has some acting and modeling experience and her facial expressions and mannerisms while singing were great. They've been pretty hard on her all year, but she did a solid musical number and might get some more fans after this week.
I thought David Archuleta was great, although my kids weren't as thrilled. I think that's because his song sounded like it could be an instant number one song on the adult contemporary charts, and that's just not their bag. He probably sailed through on the voting though, because he has the teeny-bopper fan base and the adult contemporary geriatric crowd voted in force for him too.
I feel David Cook could win this year. Idol fans still have the premature ousting of Daughtrey fresh in their minds and they know how successful he has become as a rocker. It's time for a Rocker to win Idol. I could be wrong, and the young David's fanbase might be too strong to beat, but the two David's will probably in the final two.
Too bad for Carly. I thought her singing of the theme song for Jesus Christ Superstar was terrific. It's interesting that Michael Johns went home already and he was from Australia and now Carly, who is from Ireland and was one of the early favorites, also was sent home. It appears that Americans do know their geography, despite what we learned from watching Miss Teen South Carolina botch that question on YouTube.
So, who do you Idol fans out there think will win? There doesn't seem to be an obvious winner at this point in the competition like in years past.

Nice post! I haven't seen an Idol show in years. Sounds like I'm missing something here.

i wasnt suprised that daughtrey was ousted last year he had a good voice however it was sort of elmer fuddy to me when he topped out holding a high note. this year i think it will be between archuleta and syesha brook has a nice voice but has trouble holding a note for any lenght of time the artist they had to choose from this year sure they were and are great but the type of music should not be the type of music for the contestants. i heard mike johns on the tom sullivan radio show that i listen to and he is still shaking his head and wondering why he got booted.

That's true JHD, the contestants this year have had to deal with some difficult music to choose from that they are probably unfamiliar with. It's like old-fogie music which I like though. Next week is Neil Diamond. I can just see Jason with his long dreadlocks and ukulele singing "Sweet Caroline!"

And he's still depressed from when his dad used his sled named "Rosebud" for kindling last winter and teased him about "Cracklin' Rosie" in the fireplace.

I like "Cracklin' Rosie" and "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show." I don't really care for "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" or "They're Coming to America" so much. I hope the contestants who probably don't even know who Neil Diamond is don't pick songs we don't even know.
David Spade did a nice rendition of Neil Diamond:

I'll have to try that horse fly line on my wife and see what kind of reaction I get.
