Why on earth would you want a career .260 hitter as your batting coach? Forget the 'roids implications, just think about it. .260 isn't even enough to get him, with all those HR's he hit, in the HoF. It's a publicity stunt, and one that will backfire. His surly personality and lack of plate discipline certainly don't mark him as an obvious choce...
Coaching is different than playing. La Russa didn't make the Hall of Fame as a player, and neither did Connie Mack, John McGraw, Casey Stengel, Walter Alston, or Joe Torre. Just becuase McGwire was an awesome record-breaking power hitter doesn't mean he can't help younger players do better at the plate.
