The CC board of Supervisors will fire 56 Deputy sheriffs to balance the Contra Costa Budget.
I believe that is a great idea. We no need of so many Deputies. We have a a city police.
56 Deputies out of 600, is nto that many, but it makes millions out of the budget. I say fire 100 more and we will balance the budget. We can hire more teachers and invest in education.

FEEL.GOODZ: I would say that public services are just as anyother job, your easily replaceable and there is a line a mile long for those who dont want to take a pay cut, but what concerns me the most is the strong arming of the d.a. who publicly announce exactly whom they will be not convicting, I SAY FIRE THAT PIECE OF DODO and and his co-herts who think there not subject to a budget cut, GET OVER IT YOU ARE, and further more if i was a criminal i would be commiting the crimes that they say would be less likly to prosecute.....beings he tried to scare the public by his unprofessional announcement. Deputy Sherriff's make around $200,115.00 in total comp a year.. Wow that's a lot of money our city's, state and schools could use. Realistic - having seen your posting on other boards relating to law enforcement...... your uninformed rantings don't surprise me.
First of all - the police only cover the cities, while the Sheriff's Office covers ALL unincoporated areas in the county. The CCCSO is also responsible for the jails (should they just release the inmates so they can move in to your neighborhood?), the courts (you don't want any security in the courts?), investigations (for county crimes - should they stop investigating them?), civil processes (extradition, evictions, other court-ordered orders), the Delta (marine patrol). Ohhh - wait in minute - not in MY backyard. There's more to what they do than you see in your own narrow-minded view- given that they have about 720 square miles to cover .
Secondly (to the other posters) - a deputy makes about $70K a year (gross). Now take around $1200/month OUT of that check to partly fund the retirement. That reduces the gross annual pay to about $55,600. That ain't a helluva lot, given what they're faced with. Add in the "value" of benefits, and I would guess that comes out to about $140K TOTAL compensation. Now compare that to TOTAL compensation to what other professions are making in TOTAL compensation. The sheriff's dept is one of the LOWEST-PAID agencies in the Bay Area -and that's because of the incompetence of your Board of Supervisors.
It must be nice to sit watching TV all the time and getting your news from the liberal mainstream media and other talking heads - who have NO clue as to reality. If you want facts, I suggest you dig them up from the source - not the politicians or "news" organizations.
Sure - let's just fire more deputies and put the money into education..... another money pit. Until I see some efficiencies from the politicians and other quasi-governmental agenices, I'm voting NO. My money is going directly to where it's needed by check, so the politicians and administrators can't get to it.

So now I have to feel sorry for these useless people. Profession? give me a break...If you have a high School diploma you qualify. And I have to fell sorry for them because they put 1200 towards THEIR retirement. Which is an awesome retirement package. Of course you forget that the 70k is to start. They get overtime and crap and a half. Today i saw how cops tasered a 72 year old granny, wow there you go again. Another cop is accused of murdering the exboyfriends wife in LA. I am sick of COPS being treated as sacred cows. They are getting paid well. We no need as many, if you want to pay them out of your pocket go ahead but, don't touch mine.

1. Yes, a HS diploma is the MINIMUM education requirement. Beyond that, they have to pass a written exam, an oral interview, a physical agility test, an extensive background check, a polygraph exam, a medical exam, a psychological exam.... then if they pass all that, they THEN have to pass the 6-month academy training. Once they graduate from that, they have to pass a FTO (field training officer) program - which is another 6 months to a year. You think you can pass all of that ? I frankly doubt that you'd get past the background - certainly not the polygraph.
2. $70k gross pay - which translates to about $4600/month after taxes - which translates to about $3400 after contributions to the retirement plan. If you're paying $3000/month for a mortgage, that leaves you $400/month for everything else (WOW!!!). Now THERE'S a job that'll REALLY make you RICH!!!!
3. You seem to castigate the entire law enforcement profession (yes, profession) based on a few isolated incidents. Keep in mind that all of the good stuff they do DOESN'T make the papers - of course, you have your own definition of "good."
4. You state that we should "feel sorry for these useless people..." Nobody said "feel sorry" - except for you. If they're useless, then DON'T bother calling them for ANYTHING. Otherwise, you're just a hypocrite. See my earlier comments about what they (the Sheriff's Office) do vs local police departments. You don't like it, then get the state laws changed. The Sheriff's Office is a constitutional position and is mandated by the state to perform certain functions. Local PDs are NOT mandated by the state.
If you don't want to pay for it, then just deduct that amount from your income taxes and proptery taxes and send in less than they say you owe. That should show them. RIGHT.

Again, You or your Bfriend must be in Law enforcement because you distort their function so much.
70k is the minuimum they make, They also make a ton of overtime.
A few incidents, Ok do you want to hear more and that is the recent ones? The killing of a 110 pound kid in his home in antioch. The killing of Oscar Grant in bart, shoot in the back when he was restrained in the floor, oops Drew peterson another homicidal cop. read the book blue vs. black and others...
Obviusly, their medical and psychological exam is a sham, since there are so many nut jobs on the force. Of course they have to be trained for any Job. But, if they were not in paid by the state, the most their brains would amount to in the real job market is 10 and hour as watchman or working in home depot if they are lucky.

They are making TONS of overtime.... WHY???? because there are NOT enough Deputies... Hire more Deputies and you will have a safer society... I want safe & Healthy deputies/police officers protecting me...

I explained the true role of the Sheriff's office in local government to these idiot's weeks ago, but alas they have no desire to face or comprehend the FACTS. These guys have a personal agenda that I suspect involves past or possibly even present contacts with the police. Like the old saying says, "where there's smoke, there's fire"!! Set your computer to "ignore user" these guys aren't worth the time or effort.

I know what is supposed to be their function. They do not do much of it. They are being laid of or fired, big deal!, dead weight of the budget. When times get better, I hope they do not hire them again and stop over hiring. And sorry to tell you, things won't get better in a while. Don't worry since you love them so much (your bfriends or protectors) won't take jobs with other agencies since most are cutting. And since most of them are not worth more than $10 per hour, they will come running at the posibility of being re hired. However, by the time of being rehired comes, it will be cheaper to get new cadets, so most likely, these people are gone for GOOD!
So why don't you man up a little? that will help you in your crisis.

I've noticed they continue to respond with catchphrases like "cowards like you" or "psychos like you" - no matter what the issue. I guess when the facts aren't on their side, they have to resort to name-calling. They've obviously had a run-in with law enforcement - which is probably why they feel comfortable in the anonymous blogging.
Most people outgrew that after about ages 7-8.

those deputies are not being FIRED they are being LAYED OFF, big difference! They will be brought back to work when then budget issues get worked out I guarrantee it! Hopefully they won't have taken jobs at other agencies in the interim.

I read these blogs, or as "realistic" dip**** calls it, "bloging" for amusement. Sounds like some Nordic ice sport. Can anyone tell me out there what a "muggin" is? Isn't that a character from Harry Potter or something? How about "roberies"? Is that something like a series of crimes committed by suspects dressed in a bathrobe? Please inform us realistic. The educated people are very confused.

I looked at the Contra Costa County information websites. And by far, the majority of cops at that sheriff's office are not making over $70K a year. And I assume your talking gross pay vs. net take home pay. Plus the Sheriff's office aparently has no overtime for anyone. Newspaper article says any open shifts go to the laid off deputies to feed their families. Gee, how many jobs out there do people go to work knowing they may not come home to their family ever again for under $100K a year. Office politicians get paid more. I say pay them $200K a year minimum.
