There are some places here that really bring you back to the good old days.... Like the R/C car track at the old Antioch Airport, the green dock at Contra Loma, the bike jumps behind Skippolinnis Pizza, The smell of the paper plant on Wilbur, Gravity Hill, Murder Hill, Orlo.......... Whatever happend to that dude.?..he was the only street person in town back then, everyone knew him, never caused any problems, just wanted to wash your windows. The Antioch fleamarket before it turned into the mexican market....everyone used to sell their stuff there on Saturday, Winners Circle, Roller Haven, the classic car night at A&W rootbeer, Ricos Pizza, No Name Pizza, KMART AKA Lowes, the straw hat pizza in the mall parking lot W/ the model planes hanging from the ceiling/ shinobi/ afterburner/ bad dudes arcade game, Snow shack, Oooga Booga Beach, the potato barge, who the hell lived in Brentwood? Oakley? ...1 horse town, Hillcrest? take a pair a hiking boots, Section 8? isnt that a type of discharge that crazy people get from the military? Speaking of crazy people,...how about the guy that used to rip through Antioch on his red Honda ATV (3 wheeler) with a wheelie bar....haha the cops would chase that dude everywhere, it was every weekend. All places to drive your 4x4 before Hillcrest was built... these are just a few of the things that Antioch had back in the day that made Antioch Antioch. Oh yeah..Cecil and Tony the Barbers...LOL!!! nomatter what you told them dudes, they would cut your hair the same everytime.

Actually, the "Potatoe Barge" was spelled with an "e" in potato!
When everyone was giving VP Dan Quail grief of his correcting a school kid on the spelling of "potato", I sent him a picture of the "Potatoe Barge" and how it was spelled!

The plastic covered seats in the back of the Campinell or however you spell it, those things came in handy.

I grew up on the OG part of Hillcrest when it didn't exist south of highway 4. Jacobsen Park was my stomping grounds. I also remembered when 7-11's had arcade machines in them. That was awesome! As a strapping young lad I would always go out to dinner with my parents to the Potatoe Barge and order the jumbo prawns. Anyone remember Udo's Comics? I went there all the time to buy comic books and whoop fools at street fighter and mortal kombat.

I went to Udo's one time and he asked if I liked roller coasters. I said yes so he grabbed me and threw me into the air and then caught me. I was terrified.

I remember it all too well, I seen the shark! The Metro... I seen some dude wiped out on one of those mini streetbikes trying to impress some chicks infront of the Metro LOL !! How about the Antioch cruise? all the minitrucks with the heartbeat pin striping.

I miss the cruise, before I could drive I would walk to Taco Bell on mahagony and watch all the cars cruising around, and people just hanging out in the parking lots,It will never be like that again. I have the newspaper saved that says Antioch was going to start fineing cars for cruising, lol I think it said if they seen your car three times within a certian time frame it was considered cruising.

I think there are still "cruising prohibited" signs by Celias...haha
Lets start the Cruise back up. but with all the people that used to be in it. Now It would be Minivans and work trucks cruising down the street with kids crying in the back.....Meet up at Lowes then Cruisse over to Homedepot, then on the way back hit up toys r us. for the kids then finish it off with a city park picnic. You dont get much more gangsta than that.

While I never cruised Antioch, I did cruise Walnut Creek back in the 1960s in my '55 Chevy BelAir.
Since I have a '55 Chevy BelAir in my garage that has been waiting 25 years for me restore, A cruise in downtown Antioch may give me some incentive to finally start on it!

Does anyone (you'd have to be old) remember the Treasure hunts in Antioch? The old Antioch Ledger would print clues on the location and everyone would try to guess. People would take their shovels out and dig.... can you imagine that going on now?? LOL !! How about Hill 13...... I went skydiving out at the old Antioch Airport in the early '80s.... almost killed myself !!!

Ido recall the Emperor Norton Treasure Hunts that had people looking all over the Bay Area for the "treasure" back in the 1950s and early 1960s!

Arne, I remember those Emperor Norton treasure hunts too. The clues were printed in the Chronicle as I recall.
Hey, when you get around to restoring your Chevy let me know. My 14 year old son would love to watch the progress. He and my daughter are crazy about older cars and he's told me that his dream is to restore one some day. They went to the Behring museum at Blackhawk yesterday and were in seventh heaven.

Stoney,
If you and your kids are into classic cars, there is a guy in Benica that sells them. You can go in to his business and on the lot and check them out. He has lots of H.P. and classic cars that are restored, Mustangs, Old Chevy's, 'Cuda's ect. He's right off 780 and has a car carrier rack that sits high enough that you can see it from the road. It's right across from Lake Herman overlook. If you want to see classic cars, great place to go! Took my son over there and turned him into a High Pro fan from the rice burners. always has about 40 to 50 cars.

Thanks for that info, but that sounds dangerous. The nagging to buy one would never stop

Yea, I've dealt with the nagging for about 3 years from my son. He saw a picture of my 55 Chevy and keeps telling me that he should be able to get one too. I keep trying to tell him, I bought mine for $250 in 1968. He keeps trying to tell me that $12000. now is the same as $250 in '68 because of inflation. Knew I was going to be in trouble when I dropped him on his head when he was a baby. Doctor said he was fine, but has me wondering sometimes.
Saw a beautiful '57 Nomad there and I fell in love with it, But my wife didn't want the family to live in a car. I told her it would give us a chance to live anywhere we liked, all we had to do was park it where we wanted. She still said no. Sometimes I hate teachers, they're to practical, LOL.

And I found my '55 Chevy 2-door BelAir in a barn in Salinas and paid $400 for it.
Of course it had grass growing through the floor boards (Chevy always had thin floorboards in front) and wasn't running. So we towed it back to Fort Ord (where were were living) with my then 14 year old son in the '55 steering it! Thank goodness the brakes still worked.
You should have seen the expression on the gate guards at the back gate when we pulled in!

The latest craze is to find thugs with baggy pants and their boxers hangin out revealing their lazy butts, pull their pants over their heads and beat their heads in with pillow cases full of river rocks. Once their heads swell up supposedly they get really high and enjoy it.
Take the city back..old school...new thugs have no morals, ethics, ambition or skills...before we turn into richmond...Peace
