Smokey, I was just lying here watching the June 10th meeting. There wasn't much going on the forum here, so I thought I would just watch a city council meeting. It was kind of a mundane meeting except for the nice proclamation the golf pro Pat Cain received for all his dedicated service which was nice. The council said they want to look into the homeless issue downtown and those strawberry vendors that I know drive you nuts Smokey.
Other than those highlights, the Chip and Ken show was back, but I've seen that so many times I could probably watch it with the sound turned off and do a perfect voice over on my own. I did almost get killed once by one of those big car delivery trucks though, so when he says, "What are we going to do when somebody gets killed on Auto Center Drive?"- Im so glad it wasn't me that day because I wouldn't want to be mentioned every other week on the Chip and Ken show.
The council meeting was 100 times better than the DVD movie my wife recently brought home, "Be Kind, Rewind." The rest of my family all walked out on it but I finished the movie thinking it would get better but it never did. I like Jack Black, but that movie was terrible. The only enjoyable and funny part was during the credits at the end when they played Fats Waller's original song "Your Feets Too Big." I can usually find humor in everything, but it was nearly impossible with that movie. I want to see "Get Smart"
BJ, sorry to hear you are on your back again.
I also watched the June 10th meeting. I shouldn't have. Now I'm angry. LOL It wasn't the council(don't give them credit) who brought up the subject of chronically homeless and street vendors. And don't even mention the library funding. HAH!
I was watching the Food Chanel this evening and they were highlighting Disney World foods. The secret to their turkey legs is: they are injected with a salt cure into the muscle.
Need to watch a better flick tonite? Channel 9 at 8pm(repeated at 9:20. The Stranger, 1945, starring Edward G. Robinson and Orson Wells.
Maybe a hit on the head with a turkey leg would keep you from doing so much.
I watched The Stranger at 9:20. WOW, that was great acting. Loretta Young and Richard Long were in it also. If you didn't see it, watch for it to come on again.
Pat Cain really has done a great job at Lone Tree. The course is much nicer than it was when he first got there and his work with the youth programs has been fantastic. He deserves all the proclamations he can get. A real nice guy as well.
The gentleman who spoke on Pat Cain's behalf was Gordon Gravelle. Gordon was a classmate of mine, Ygnacio Valley High class of '67. After attending BYU he spent 8 years in the in the NFL. He was an offensive tackle for the Steelers from '72 - '76 and won two Super Bowl rings, Superbowls IX & X. He played for the Giants from '77 - '79 and finished his career with the Rams in '79. He's been a developer and involved with Antioch civic matters ever since. Nice to see a familiar face.
The Longshores are a great family. It was always fun to go to their place and hear Johnny their donkey, braying out back. I saw that Doc Longshore passed away a few months ago. His obit was certainly impressive.
Stoney, if you go back that far, you will remember that there was nothing but orchards around the Longshore house and the BART test track was built not far away as well. Heck, I didn't know you were that old :)
First of all we need to appologize to everyone for our private reminiscing, but yeah, those were my old stomping grounds. My family moved to a house at the top of Ygnacio Valley Rd & La Casa Via in 1957 when I was 7 years old. My sister and brother and I were like part of the family of the Thomas's, the caretakers of Heather Farms ranch when it was still a working ranch. We used to build tunnel forts by bending over the mustard plants and tying the tops together over across Minert Rd from the Longshore property that eventually became Bart. Those were RR tracks back then that hauled fruit from all the orchards that lined Bancroft Rd and other properties in the area.
The poor council has Chip Stein lobbying for more smooth ramps and Stoney lobbying for more bumps and humps. How are they going to make everybody happy? I know when my back went out I had to lay down on the back seat and every time my wife went over a speed bump sending excruciating pain up my spine I was cursing out Stoney!
The ADA law may be driving Chip's ramps but I'll bet Chip has been driving you guys nuts. How do you keep a straight face and keep from rolling your eyes every time you see him and Ken every two weeks with the same complaints.
(Don't worry. This is a public forum and you can take the fifth)
(As a matter of fact, I've got a fifth right here)
Hey, you're right, since these are public comments we don't really have to answer anyone unless we want to. You should probably use that one on Clayton when she asks you if you're a socialist, but I know you can't restrain yourself when she baits you into an argument. LOL
I couldn't agree more with you about Pat Cain. I just watched the Council meeting on the website and thought that Pat was more than deserving of the proclamation. I was out at the golf course and had asked if he was around, and much to my surprise his last day was the day before I was there. As someone who literally grew up in Antioch during Pat's tenure, I can vouch for the successes that he has been part of. The fact that the golf course is run as a non-profit is much different than most municipal golf courses. (I worked for a local municipal course, and most cities siphon millions of dollars for there own use from municipal golf courses.) Antioch has not done that, allowing the profits to be put back into the course itself. Anyone who has played Lone Tree over the last 20-30 years has seen remarkable improvements. I am not just talking about the new events center, I am talking about the improvements to the course itself, and it's usually friendly staff. Through the years of playing Lone Tree and working at a local course I had the priviledge to get to know Pat a little. As you said, he has not only done a great job with the golf course, but Pat is a very nice person.
I have not yet talked to those who would know, but I have to wonder if his decision to leave has anything to do with the hiring of a new general manager. From the sounds of things at the council meeting it seemed as though it was Pat's decision to move on to greener fairways(Contra Costa Country Club), but the timing made me a little curious. Hopefully that is not the case, Pat is a great person and was definitely an asset to Lone Tree Golf Course.

I'm glad the tweaking worked for you. BazookaJoe keeps trying it and now he's bed ridden.

I've known Gordon for over twenty-five years now in his new life as a real estate professional. He is, indeed a class act...

Well, I knew Gordon's wife Molly before Gordon did. We were both in 4-H back in the early 1960s.

Could Stoney's bump cancel out Chip's ramps?
Actually, the ADA law is driving Chip's ramps, which we've been doing anyway at a considerable cost.
What Stoney doesn't have is a federal law mandating his bumps
