Cal Football - Harsh Realities

I think the harsh reality has set in.  Tedford doesn't deserve to be personally attacked as he appears to be a good guy.  However, his teams don't have the right attitude to be a champion in a very competitive league. Tedford appears to be more of a technician and X's and O's guy than motivator. In college football you've got to be able to motivate these kids to play beyond themselves, even if they have talent.  All problems can't be solved by watching more film and changing schemes. Sometimes you have to make an attitude change.  The team simply has got to "expect" to win, not "hope" to win contingent upon perfect "execution".  Teams must have an identity that to fall back on. Are they a tough team? Are they a fun team? Are they a high flying team? What is Cal's identity?

All great teams have a mentality and you know who they are.  I realize that you don't want to air all your dirty laundry in the media, but the things Tedford says in the press do not inspire confidence that he's going to fix what is a trend on his teams; consistent underachievement and the inability to respond to adversity.  I often wonder has he ever truly believed in the program.  From the complaints about the facilities, his eternal admiration for the Oregon program, to what seems to be envy for the SC program, has he embraced the fact the Cal is a first rate program and should expect to win Pac-10 Championships?

Let's face it; his teams have been great at playing the underdog role.  They've also been able to "execute" well against inferior or average teams.  But his teams have not responded well to pressure and do not step up when the challenges are clear. I can only remember one big game that his team has won, where the expectations were high, the team faced some adversity, and they had to come back to win on the road. That was the Oregon game in 2007. I truly thought that was a turning point for the program, but what received little attention at the time was Longshore’s injury at the end of that game that began the monumental slide. Again, adversity that the team was not able to overcome.

Hey, Tedford has done a great job getting the program to this point, but Cal may need someone else to take it to the promise land.  Tedford seems to lack the emotion necessary to spark his team when he needs to.  Teams often take on the personality of the head coach. From my vantage point, that personality seems to be a well meaning, hard working nice guy that is good, and a good technician, but not a champion.

Actually I feel Tedford has done a pretty good job with the program BUT the expectations are very high when you compete with the likes of USC, Oregon, etc. and if Tedford has faults, they are listed below:

1. After the debacle with Nate Longshore in 2008, how in God's name can Tedford say that Riley (after big losses to USC/Oregon) Kevin Riley is still his starting QB, that he does not want to create controversy !!!!   [bleep], there is a controversey and there damn well should be one, in fact Riley should be looking over his shoulder at the # 2/3 QB's and wondering if he is still going to have a job !!!!   His performance part. against SC was appalling and that is an understatement. His passes were high or thrown to the wrong side of the receiver, he was jittery and should have been pulled in the 2nd quarter.  Tell me truly Berkeley Fans, do you want this [bleep] to continue or should Tedord put in someone else !! With two losses and more coming (see Stanford, Or. State, UCLA, etc.) the season is for all intents and purposes over !!!!!!!!  Let's not let Tedford's "alleigance" to Longshore cloud the remainder of this season as it did in 2008 !!!!!

2. Secondly, you saw Oregon repeatedly flood one side or the other with three receivers, one to catch the pass, and two to block, did CAL ever figure this one out, no way, SC did it again yesterday !!   Where the hell is the defensive coordinator ???   Does this [bleep] ever watch film, ever make adjustments to his defensive scheme ??   I am not a football genius BUT after watching this technique work so well a week ago against Oregon, one would have thought that Tedford and his assistants would have come up with a scheme to thwart it , wouldn't you ??

This program is laughable !!!!!
