The time has come for everyone to become better educated about the upcoming Special Election set for May 19, 2009. Do you know what the ballot measures are all about? Have you read the official election materials available on the web http://www.voterguide.sos.ca.gov/

I urge everyone to read and understand all of these issues and to vote on May 19th. These are troubling times for our state and the nation and we all need to make an informed decision that is not based on all of the propaganda that is sure to start flowing very freely very soon by various spin masters.

You must mail in your registration to your county registrar of voters no later than May 2, 2009. You can get a registration form from the state site here http://www.sos.ca.gov/nvrc/fedform/

If you turned 18 since the last election or you will be 18 no later than the day of the election you are eligible to vote. All of the rules relative to registration in California can be found here http://www.sos.ca.gov/elections/elections_faq.htm#vr

You can also register to vote by visiting your local registrar of voters and obtaining a form from them.

This might not seem to be an important election but my experiences have taught me that there is no such thing as an unimportant election. The results of this election will be as critical as any the State of California has faced at any time in the past. Please become informed and please vote.

California State Government Failures

Elections cost money and are paid for by the jurisdictions entitled to vote. Since the last General Election there has been a proliferation of Special Elections in California mostly to address failures in our State Government regarding education. Now after many of us have addressed these issues locally, we are confronted with a “punt” Special Election from our State Government for their failure to once again not passing a reasonable State budget in a timely manner.

Measure 1F (Preventing Pay Increases to Elected Officials During Budget Deficit Years) does not go far enough. Simply, Elected Officials should NOT be compensated for any period they fail to approve a budget by the deadline required by State law!

So we know that this special election is a result of our collective failure to enact appropriate taxes and regulate the use of the taxes that are collected. Just saying that we should not pay anyone if they fail to approve a budget will not correct the current budget imbalance. What do you recommend we do? Should we just let the State of bankrupt and then face the issue of millions of people who have suddenly lost their only means of income? Will anyone be safe in their himes if we do this? I am serious, this is a real election and the issues surrounding it affect every man, woman and child in this state and so far all I have seen are fancy brochures that mostly lie about various groups who are/arenot supporting these propositions. Not one of these fancy brochures have offered up any solutions to the budget imbalance, all they do is complain about what the the propostions do not do for them. In my opinion that is exactly how we got into this mess in the first place. Californians have proven over and over that they are a really greedy lot and that they are not willing to properly provide for the children who reside here or our environment. We have offered our land to exploitive developers, ruined our coasts and waterways to provide mansions in Malibu and trailor parks along the Sacramento and destroyed our fish wildlife by overuse and pollution of our freshwater supplies. Will we finally wake up and start doing something about all of this or will we just continue saying no to any legislation that tries to balance the budget?
