He is exactly the type we were looking for to compete for 3rd string. He still has potential and enough baggage to be cheap and available. At least we should have some actual competition during camp. And, in the unlikely event JR goes down or tanks it, he could be a ray of hope.
Well, Sir Piggy, if all you're looking for is somebody to chart plays, cheerlead, and act the role of the opposing quarterback, there may indeed be a "ray of hope" in Frye. But what I saw of him here in Cleveland doesn't indicate any potential whatsoever beyond that. He's a bona-fide scout team quarterback, that's all.
Less than three full games in 2 seasons with 2 different teams isn't much of a shot. Clevland benched him at the same time they decided O-line may be important. Joe what's his name, Thomas? What do you expect for 3rd string?
He beat out Brady Quinn and Derek Anderson before being yanked a few minutes into the opener against the Steelers, which shows poor coaching. His college stats and his youth still leave room for the light to click on.
Very similar to how another 3rd rounder, Andrew Walter, could be to another team.

I had to check the roster just to make sure he's still here. If you check out his bio on Raiders.com, it is half of a sentence, "big, strong armed QB with NFL experience." That's the whole bio. Charlie Frye has literally over a page of single spaced 8pt type. Too funny.
This is the time of the year where these sort of moves, regardless of our personal opinions based on previous experiences are great to see. Competition and practice is what makes good teams great and that's not something we've seen in Oakland for a very long time.
I love to see that they are still trying to bring in quality players to compete at various positions. Sure, his body of work isn't large and he's nothing to really brag to the rest of the AFC West about. But he's a body, he's got physical ability, and he's going to make everyone else work harder to beat him out and earn a roster spot.
Now if only we could do the same thing at a more crucial spot....a DT perhaps?
Bringing bodies in, especially at this time of year, is ALWAYS a good idea.

Not a bad signing. More than likely he'll be our #3 QB which means we now have the most experienced QBs we have had in a while which isn't saying much
