Oh. My. Gawd. What on earth would possess anyone to lie in the middle of the street, in the middle of the night (or a'tall). Midnight rendezvous? Star gazing? Inebriated? Unbefreakin'lievable.
Hey buddy those are my friends you are talking about!!! If you can't say anything respectful then don't say anything at all, you got it? Back off my friends!!!! Is it a crime to look at the stars at night? Grow a freaking heart man!
Hey buddy those are my friends you are talking about!!! If you can't say anything respectful then don't say anything at all, you got it? Back off my friends!!!!
What the heck? Are you freaking joking me?!?!?! Some of you people have no freaking heart what so ever!!!!! You must not read when it says to keep negative comments away!! This is my friend you guys are making fun of. I have grown up with this kid for the last 9 years and let me tell you, he's not stupid!!! The real stupid people are the ones who call other people stupid for no reason at all!! To those of you that are calling my friend stupid, how would you feel if that was your friend or son or daughter?!?! You would be just as pissed off at people calling them stupid like I am right now!!! Like I mentioned before, if you dont have something positive to say then freaking keep your stupid comments to yourself!!!!
I would hope that as compassionate human beings, we are first concerned with the well-being of these two children, and their concerned parents, family and friends. Yes, lying in the middle of the street during the night is certainly not the wisest behavior in the world. Yes, a much smarter behavior might have been to camp out in ones own backyard. Keep in mind, that last night was graduation and promotion night for many students in the school district. A feeling of freedom, unvincibility, and doing something different and crazy just might enter into the mind of a juvenile experiencing their first evening of a long awaited summer vacation. These children may use excellent common sense 99.9% of their lives. Realize, even as adults, with the experience of "growing up", we still may not always use common sense 100% of the time. As a child I know I did some pretty stupid things, jumping off house roofs into swimming pools, or making small explosives from M80 gunpowder, etc.. As we get older we do grow wiser, understanding that one stupid thing that sounds fun and entertaining at that moment might result in a permanent catostrophic result, broken bones, loss of limbs, or even death.
Any individual that has never done anything "stupid" in their entire life, please immediately identify yourself. However, those individuals that are honest with themselves, realizing some of the stupid actions they have done in their life and got away with them, might quietly reflect and give thanks.
Please note for your benefit that the "i" and the "u" on the keyboard are located next to each other. I apologize for not hitting the spell check button on such a casual email posting.
Thank you and in the future I will be much more careful.
Hey lil one... they ARE stupid. WHO lays in the middle of the STREET where cars drive expecting NOT to get run over, were they suicidal? Who knows. If not, they were certainly STUPID!!
And don't tell us to keep our negative comments to ourselves, that's what these forums are FOR- to express our OPINIONS. I think those friends of yours could have been nominated for the Darwin Awards!
Boomer, people can call your friends stupid without knowing them because at approximately 3:30 am your friends were laying on a blanket in the street, a move in and of itself that screams "STUPID". It screams "stupid" because it is something thats obvious danger is so apparent that no right thinking person would do it. Shockingly, after deciding to do this, they were run over by a car. What did they think would happen? Would you recommend they do the same thing on a set of train tracks or an airport runway? I feel bad that it happened to them, but don't try and defend what is one of the dumbest things I've read about in the newspaper in a long time. Give your friends support while they are healing and then let them know what a pack of idiots they were, so maybe next time they'll think before they act.
No, it's not illegal to go out & look at the stars at night, however, it is rather *lame* and *stupid* to go lay down in the *middle of the street*. This decision is what people are responding to, and why they're calling your friends stupid. If you can't comprehend that, then that's too bad. You're friends might be the smartest kids in town, they may get good grades in school, but face it buddy, even you have to admit that the decision to *lay down in the middle* of the street in the *middle of the night* was a very stupid one. Did they not have a back yard they could lay down on? How about a front yard? sidewalk? I'm sure there were plenty of places they could've sat, or layed down, on to stargaze other than the street.
Heck, if it was one of my nieces or nephews, your damned straight I'd be calling their decision stupid as well, even when they were in the hospital. Call me heartless or whatever you want, but the fact remains the decision to lay down in the middle of the street, in the middle of the night was very stupid. Now they suffer the consequences. You, Boomer, need to realize this.
A map has just been added to the article (on the home page, underneath the headline) . . . it looks like the boys were lying down in the middle of a short cul-de-sac. They may have decided that doing so was safe since there wouldn't be any through traffic, not stopping to think about middle-of-the-night newspaper deliveries and the like.
I'm sorry they were hurt and wish them well in their recovery. Still . . . if they were simply star-gazing, why not from the safety of their front or back yard? I've lain down and star-gazed in the wee hours myself, though it nevvvvvvver would have occurred to me to do it in the middle of the street.
(I'm thinkin' 15 year olds are probably too young to have graduated. Oh, but if it was the last day of school for the summer, that could make sense . . .)
Yes, these two individuals at fifteen years old were too young for high school graduation. They may however had siblings/friends that were involved with graduation/promotion ceromonies or parties. Exuberance was in the air last night.
For crying out loud, its summer vacation, schoooools our for suuummmer!
No more pencils No more books No more teacher's Dirty looks Out for summer Out till fall We might not come Back at all
It's not like hanging out on a cul-de-sac at three in the morning is the same as lying down on the freeway. Kids, especially 15 year old boys, aren't known for their logic but if the craziest thing my boys ever do is hang out on the street in a quiet court at 3:30 in the morning, I'll be happy.
That being said, I wonder how fast this newspaper lady was driving around that they didn't have a chance to get out of the way. I've almost been hit backing out of my driveway a couple times by the crazy delivery person on our street. Rememeber the days when these boys would be delivering the newspaper on their bikes rather than being hit by an adult doing it in a car?
Rmac, I'd been wondering why the kids couldn't have gotten out of the way, until it dawned on me that they had probably fallen asleep in the road.
Depending on trees, shrubbery, and lighting (or lack of it), along with the kids' position in the street relative to the direction that the delivery person was turning onto the cul-de-sac from the cross street, it's entirely possible that she saw nothing. I doubt speed was a factor since the driver stopped with the kids between axles, after she first felt a bump.
The map marker initially was intended to be an approximate indication of the boys' location. Sorry about any confusion. We've updated it now to reflect better information that we're getting from police.
Why the street you ask? Well, there are no trees there, sillys. And Boomer, just because you've known these two for years doesn't prevent them from being dumber than a sack of hammers. I hope they buy and use lots of Aquaphor - great for road rash.
Looks like they are going to live to face another day.
Hopefully a bit better informed on their choices.
That said, some of the newspaper drivers go pretty quickly down residential streets - our does, but I'm about the only person up and about a 5 a.m. (and I don't spend that time in the middle of the street).

This is the first time that I've heard it referred to as "stargazing." Two unrelated boys laying on a blanket in San Francisco at 3 a.m. would be called something other than stargazers. Somebody better keep an eye on those two.
I just have one question. Where are the parents? Everyone keeps talking about these boys. But let's be honest. They are minors and their parents are responsible. Do you know where your children are at 3am? I sure do and I would never allow them to sleep in the street. Maybe they snuck out in the middle of the night? Who knows. But, what a tough way to learn a lession in life. I wish them a speedy recovery. If there parents had knowledge of this little adventure, they are the ones that should be called stupid and totally irresponsible!
That's right. Where were the parents? I've taught my kids NEVER to be in the street except to cross at a crosswalk. Did these parents do the same? Or were they too out to lunch to know what was going on with their kids? Go figure.
Not all kids in Danville are rich, snobby, moron kids.
And, I do know Wes & Kevin. Yeah, sometimes they do stupid things, but, everybody makes mistakes. And this is just one of the many mistakes people make in life. This was a dumb mistake they made, but it doesn't make them a stupid kid.
Plus, you don't have to get all critical and blame their parents for the things THEY do. I'm sure their parents are wondering the same thing as to what the hell their kids were doing in the middle of the street at 3 in the morning. It was a stupid mistake, but, don't be going around and calling them names and thinking that all kids in Danville are just like them, because, it's not.
If you think that two boys laying in the middle of the street in the middle of the night were doing something inappropiate/gay. It doesn't make them gay. [Referring to a comment someone left about what 2 boys could be doing] What if they're best friends and they just like talking and looking at stars with each other? Maybe they chose that time because the stars are the brightest during that time of the night?
And, just because their not seniors, it doesn't mean they can't celebrate on the last day of school. I mean, who doesn't love summer? Let's just all hope and pray that they will recover fully and will be able to have a fun summer before sophomore year in the fall.
Lucky, I was one of the people who wondered if the boys were having a romantic interlude, merely because nobody *knew* why they were in the street initially . . . I also guessed at a couple of other reasons, including stargazing, just grasping at straws until the reports could provide more information.
I don't believe anyone said anything about "inappropriateness". Personally, I'm a proponent of gay rights (I'm a straight, married parent of a son). I'd ask the same question about the possibility of a romantic interlude if it had been a boy and girl sharing a blanket, or two girls sharing a blanket, instead of two boys.
A few people have inquired about the parents . . . *sigh*. Inasmuch as we might like to police our kids 24/7, it's physically impossible. Kids disobey their parents with some regularity. Sometimes we find out about it (if we're lucky, sometimes we find out in advance and can take pre-emptive action) . . . and other times it flies completely under our radar because they try their damnedest not to get caught (haven't we all?). Kids do have the capacity to make their own decisions, whether they are good ones or not, whether their parents approve or not, or even knew about it to begin with. "Gee, it seemed like a good idea at the time." Bet they won't make that particular choice again. Their parents are undoubtedly beside themselves with worry, wanting to wring their everlovin' little necks at the same time they are thoroughly relieved that they're alive and will survive.
Yanno, the view of the stars was always just fine from my own back yard, even with trees. Back yards are also further away from street lights, which interfere with stargazing. The last day of school is certainly cause for a bit o' celebration, and a little home-style camping is perfectly reasonable . . . OFF of the street.
