Spring ball is around the corner for DVAL too. Who are the teams to watch ? who are the players to watch and which team will dominate ? how is YV with there new coaches and stuff .... are they still running Duble wing?
YV- new coaching program...from what ibeen hearing he is a great coach and probably will have solid coaching philosphy and Patrone wood will dominate this year
CP- probably will have Big Line, had okay JV team
CV- Lost good seniors but has solid starters coming back for Defense ...
Concord- lost good players, but will be a decent team... Forest Hightower will be solid
Mt. D- i agree with u freedomfalcon40. Program is improving still..
Northgate- Seems like there running game (Double Wing) didnt really work last year... and didnt have juniors on there team last season.. so probably will be a very young team ... needs to improve during offseason.. but there starting QB is returning . Had okay JV team
I agree with you guys as things stand today. But, you are right that the MDUSD budget problems could wreck havoc wth this league if they can't get the funding for sports. There is a threat that all sports may be eliminated, but there is a bond measure that will be voted on that they are saying must be passed for the future of HS sports in this district.
And don't count out CV, as coach Pardi will put a competitive team out there. I don't see them going undefeated again until the NCS finals, but wouldn't be surprised to see them beat YV or CP.
this coming season (2009) North Gate should rattle a few cages, but each team at this time appears to be pretty even...everybody took a hit at Grad, but every body has enough to make the DVAL a real battle ground.....I believe YG has a slight edge, but that could change real quick....And lets hope that the Mt. Diablo school dist comes to their sense's and keeps Sports alive........
Yea bluedog2 I totally agree with you but does North Gate have any have Returners who started last year?...
I think CV has chance of going undefeated again
BayArea Sports 1........NorthGate has a few returners, but its what is coming up from the JV's that is going to make the difference....The Bronco's won't be earth shattering, but they are going to win a few games and put a few teams up against the wall . CV has enough from last year plus a JV team to draw from which will make them pretty tough....
i saw every team play at least once last year, got to see Clayton, concord, and YV play a few times actually
YV- people have been saying they are the favorites. I dont see it, they should be good, but they lost almost everyone and yes patrone is coming back but i believe almost the entire offensive and defensive line is graduating. that will hurt patrone
CP- losing all their stud skills but kepler has built them into a perrenial winner, they should finish in top 3
CV- lost some studs but still has enough of a junior class to be really good ( #40 is a potential MVP). Pretty good JV team should help fill some holes
Concord- losing cream of the crop WR porter. the RB is coming back he is very quick. have their QB coming back. If they can put together a good Ol they can be scary
MD- like others have said they are improving. they gave some teams a game last year (close scores vs YV and Con i believe) if they can get their act together they could surprise some teams and finish in the top 3
NG- nothing went well for the broncos last year. this years team will be much improved, but i dont know if they have enough to shock anybody. they have a good Qb and WR returning, but are losing most of the rest of the team to graduation. I saw their Jvs play once and didnt think they were that good, but there were a few players who could contribute on varsity this year
All in all i think you will see the league be just as it was this year. There is no off week for any team. the top couple teams lost some talent, the bottom couple teams look to be getting better, so overall i thin kthe league will be very tight. You will see a lot of 7 point or less wins in league. I dont think we will see an undefeated team. We could easily see 2 teams tie at 4-1 in league
Concord will be really explosive on offense this upcoming season, maybe even more than last year. They have most of their stand out players returning along with the addition of Alec Pica, Nicks younger brother and Childs, a transfer wide reciver from Pitt high. Their defense will determine the outcome of their season, they might be a little weak on that side of the ball but time will tell
yea concord is going to be really explosive but i dont really know much about childs
andi think CV will have UGLY DEFENSE this year again
Mt. Diablo has a very speedy rb
CP will be very disciplined aand big
YV all i gotta say is patrone wood and lost alot of seniors who started last year but can fill those spots with talented kids
NG- needs to improve during offseason in order to be sucessful .. i been to one of there JV game againt Concord...a nd they had a very fast and explosive RB on JV... NG will be very young.. and can win some games

yv has more then patrone coming back this year...10 returning starters on o and d..new quaterback played safety last year 6'4 190..the new offense loooks like it would be successful if the o line can keep up..no returngin starters..well c how good the coach works em
concord looks dangerous with buford, #88 wr, hightower and returners they might have the best offense in the league..but their defense might be the only problem
clayton-uglys! good coach...solid returners good jv team well c how good the returning league champs will perform..too many important seniors left
cp could look ugly this year a major loss to the offense with seniors..team might be hurting at the skill postion...but word it they have a good line..also their defense needs to step it up if they want playoffs this year
mount/ ng- dont know much..both could be good underdogs..mount IS going have a handful of athletes lets just see if they can play 4 quarters..northgate has good returners colin barney thier quarterback and a solid wr/hb 32
CP also lost a lot the year Fragger graduated. Coming into the year when Joey York was a Sr, there was lots of concern about being able to replenish from the priors year graduated Sr's. Well York's Sr. years team went undefeated.
CP will be graduating a ton of speed this year and the same concerns are out there. This years Jr.s are dedicated to having a great season next year. CP's line could be as big as some D2 college teams lines. Depending on who wins starting positions, I can foresee an O-line that averages 260lbs!! CP probably won't be lighting up scoreboards like they did last season, but they sure have the tools to win the time of possession game and wear down their opponents every Friday.
CP1989.....Last year, the offense was able to make up for the defense in most games...this year despite a large O/D line, CP had better have fast LBers and defensive ends or the Falcon's could run into a lot of trouble on end runs, swing passes and reverses....Any team with any speed could run the defense ragged....The falcon JV team will produce some talent..but its April so all we can do is speculate.....
Speed can be contained by angles & execution. CP has done well in the past of overcoming speed liabilities by creating proper angles and shutting off cutback lanes to the runner. The demise of CP's defense in recent years has been the passing game (Freedom, Las Lomas, Acalanes, etc.) and the power running game (Newark, YV & CV). Next years team will finally have the size & strength to shut or slow down those power running attacks. The loss of graduates will hurt CP much more in the defensive backfield than anywhere else on defense. Losing a Shrader, Danksa, Fiamingo will be difficult to replace. Last years LB corp were mostly Jr's. Spare was the leader of the LB corp, but was nursing a nagging injury all year and saw much less playing time than he would have hoped for. I suspect you will see a much improved defense this season while the offensive side of the ball might need a slight change of philosophy & move to a little more smash mouth, grind it out type offense. I am certain the coaches have already and will continue to evaluate the talent and style of the upcoming years team and will have put forth a plan of attack.
The only time I can remember college park having a decent defense was 06-07 when they won league. They usually try to outscore everyone while giving up 40 plus
CP1989.......College Park won't be a push over...The coach knows his stuff and has plenty of time to work things out....The Falcons have had the ability to take the next step from the JV's to varsity while others don't make the transition.....the guys you mention come along to every school every so often, and its tough to replace them....The DVAL should record to some close ballgames......
That was last years team. Add in 2 transfers, a returning injured player, and natural growth of teenagers and you will see a much larger o-line this year. Raciti at TE is probably about 240-250 right now as well.
CP1989.....Raciti is about 6-2 or 6-3 isn't he and i think he is a senior this year, but i'm not sure....In any case, teams will have a tough time getting around him..
Raciti is a Jr. & yes he is about 6-3 I think. He has always been a big "kid" but now his body has matured and he's a huge "young man". Look for scouts to be all over him as a dt/de and he will create major headaches for offensive lines next year.
Kinda off topic but something to talk about. Concord will play castlemont next year again as well as skyline and san ramon valley, i guess we will see how good they will be after these games. Should be some shoot outs
Bama12......Concord should get by Castlemont and Skyline....Castlemont has speed and Skyline is having a tough time getting their act together...But San Ramon Valley is another story....The wolves have lost a lot from the 2008 team, but they will be almost as nasty as they have a lot to draw on...Better competition makes a better team and a good yard stick to measure your self.....
YV is not keeping the double wing offense. The new coach has installed a more Pro style offense and when i say Pro style i mean pro style... on the first day of installing the offense the new coach has introduced 32 different formations, and there is many more to come... i really dont think this offense is going to be good for YV.
YV fan do you know anyone involved with the program?
YV seems to be the buzz of the area since they have always been Double wing and now have a new coach. All of Concord is buzzing about what they will run. In the last week i have been told they are running the option, the spread, and a pro style offense... Which one is it?
I do know one person who is involved in the current program but hes not my source. My source is a legit one at that and is pretty close to the one person that remains with the program. I can say that i used to be a part of the program both as a play and as a coach. the word is that the new coach is bringing the NFL to highschool with the new offense... so i would have to say the offense is probably similar to his uncle's offense, as he did coach under his uncle in the NFL.
yvfan08... I guess it shows how much you really know about football. 32 different formations for a defense to try and stop is a lot better than having one formation that someone will eventually figure out how to stop and prevent you from winning games. Especially when it's against a solid defense.

We will see... it all comes down to NCS Championships. How many has championships does do the entire DVAL have combined? The answer is 2, both won by YV while running the Double Wing. CV has 0, Concord 0, Mt. D 0 CP 0 and NG 0. The championships speak for themselves.
This comment goes to show you are not the sharpest tool in the box. What the hell does any teams number of championships running a particular offense have to do with anything? If the Double Wing is such a great offense you would think YV should have won more than 2 championships in the 10 years they ran the offense then wouldn't you?
And as far as the number of teams combined with championships is a measure of what since the league is only two years old and most of the teams played in other leagues before being re-aligned in their current league now. Another pointless comment.
Well first of all it does not matter that the league is in its second year. The teams have all been around since atleast the 70's. So my statement that YV is the only team in the DVAL to win an NCS champ is valid. You speak as if these are brand new schools and that they have only had two years to compete for a champ. Second no yes YV couldve won two more titles in the 10 years that they ran it, one in 98 and the other in 00. In 98 YV was upset by Amador Valley in the first round and in 00 YVs kicker shanks an extra point to tie the game, but they lost 14-13 to Foothill, who ended up winning it that year. Also, for that person that stated that the double wing blows heres some facts for you from Tim Murphy, the coach who brought the double wing to YV.
In 11 years of Running the Double Wing and I Wing
(Ygnacio Valley High School 1998 thru 2000)
(Clovis East High School 2001 thru Present)
11 Straight Playoff appearances, 9 League Championships,
3 CIF CA Championships, 3 State Rushing Titles
11 Times Over 3,000 yards Rushing, 8 Times over 4,000 yards Rushing,
1999 Season 5,019 yards Rushing All-Time Large School Record in Northern and Central California,
It does matter how old the league is if you're going to attribute titles to that particular league. Those titles were won against teams none of the DVAL teams play anymore like Pitt, DLS, and so on.
Besides YV, all the other teams that currently make up the DVAL got their [bleep] kick on a regular basis and thus the reason to realign the leagues so the Concord's and Clayton Valley's would stop crying and have a chance to make the playoffs. I know none of the teams are brand new schools and if you knew how to discern what I said you would have figured that out. The league however is new and YV has yet to win a DVAL title. Hopefully that will change on Saturday.
YV has always been competitive year in and year out but as you pointed out in your own post, they have been bounced from the playoffs in the first or second round more consistently than they have winning the whole thing because of the offense they ran. When the level of competition is higher those teams have been able to stop that offense because of it's ONE dimensional nature.
So although it's good for racking up lots of yards during the regular season against more often times than not weak teams and defenses, that offenses lack of balance has hurt the teams that run it when they get in the playoffs.
Bringing up Tim Murphy and what he has done at Clovis High was pointless when the subject was and is about YV. Who cares what he did at the other school when it wasn't the subject?
The point of me bringing up Tim Murphy was not for you and our discussion about YV, it was meant for the person that stated that, and I quoate, "the double wing blows." So I was showing what other schools have done as well in that offense. Also not to mention that Bellermine Prep and St. Bonaventures, from So Cal, also run the offense
From the perspective of EVERYBODY else except for the wings, the double wing does blow. HS football should be fun.
That comment was probably made by a fan that was forced to watch it, or a QB that was forced to run it, or a receiver that didn't even see the ball one time all season, or the lineman that is blamed for if it doesn't work, or the coach that took abuse from everybody for running it, or.....
If you are speaking strictly from a fan standpoint, the double wing blows. But what really matters, is winning. When the new coach came to NG and instilled it, they won some games and it gave them some respectibilty. In that sense, it can be good and the fans and players want to win.
The worse feeling though is when it's not working or going anywhere. You could pass every play and go 3 and out and get the same results, but fans at least get some excitement when the QB gets sacked, the ball is intercepted and returned for a TD, or sails 20 yards over everybody's head. When they run into the line 3 times in a row and don't make a yard, it's boring as hell! But I bet when YG was winning every year with it, the fans weren't complaining much.
is patrone still playing RB? i heard a rumor about patrone playing fullback....
and yeah concord is probably going to run the spread and the option because they got realyl good WR's who can make plays and they are very explosive and they got a QB who can throw and run so... they got alot of weapon this year but probably needs more work with O-line because most of their Line was senior ..
No idea what Patrone is playing... i do know that porchet has moved to wr and he was the second best rb last year so i cant see the coach moving patrone to fb, it would be stupid of him to do that he is theyre best player by far.
The people in Sacramento should do every body a favor and fire them selves, so the state and our schools can be run they way they should be......John 11112 I sure hope you are wrong about kids paying to play....
Bluedog, I don't know if there is any alternative to paying to play. Things are getting pretty dire. The worst part about it is places like Richmond where the sports programs are already going downhill for lack of money and the kids can't afford to pay to play. At a school say in the Lamorinda area, there may be some kids who can't afford to pay, and they will likely get some sort of waiver, but they can't do that with the numbers who would need it in poorer areas.
001.....The sad part about this is there a awful good chance we may not see a 2009 Football season as well as other sports....I know that the great majority of the kids in Richmond and Oakland can't even afford football shoes and the cost of a Doc' Exam and this goes for many kids in Contra Costa Co. There are groups that have been raising money for these projects, but even they are hard pressed to raise cash for so many....Lets hope for the very best...
I wanna discus the Qbs in the league, every position is important but the QB is the leader of his team and the most important player almost always
Concord- They have Buford and Lloyd coming back. Buford can run a little, but Lloyd is a great passer, lloyd will probably overtake Buford for the starting job but both should play. The minutemen are pretty solid here
Northgate- Barney can play, tall athletic and a cannon. He is the returning starter. their Double wing offense really hurts his numbers but he can throw the ball
Mt. Diablo- They have a kid coming back who started and played the last 4 games or so named Morrow. Tall, strong armed kid. Pretty good accuracy. Looked good down the stretch last season, should start and do quite well for the red devils
Clayton Valley- They lose League MVP Levine... not sure what they have coming back, if it will be a JV coming up or what. I would love some more insight here into who will be the ugly eagle signal caller in 2009
College Park- They lose Danska, who was one of the best option QBs i have ever seen. Same situation as CV, no idea what they have or who is coming up. someone please share about the CP QB situation
and finally YV- With the offensive changes this will be their first year with an actual QB instead of a guy to pitch the ball and block. Their starter last year is coming back but he only averaged a few throws a game last season so although he has game experience he has very little passing experience.
I think the 3 best Qbs in the league are Lloyd, Morrow, and Barney. I think these 3 will be heading up the DVAL QB battle. I definitely see them being the 1st, 2nd, and honorable mention QBs but in what order will be decided on the field. Who knows maybe someone will come out of nowhere and surprise us.
Id love to hear other's feedback on the DVAL QBs and any other positions
I know that Concord is returning Galindo and supposively they have a transfer from pitt that is pretty rediculous at the wide out position, they also have starnes coming up from jv who is very talented so they look pretty stacked at that position.
The league is pretty run heavy so I dont know much about the recievers from the other teams. Now that Yv has their new offense there might be a few new names that pop up around the league at that position. College park hardly ever throws, but they do have that big tight end that could get in the mix of things. I dont know much about the other teams. Any info?
There isn't a complete list of preseason games out yet, but for starters, College Park will take on Serra on 9-25.. CV will have two tough games with Vintage of Napa and North Salinas. Concord wil take on San Ramon on 9-25 and Castlemont of Oakland.....North Gate will deal with Las Lomas on 9-19..and Ygnacio Valley seems to have the toughest preseason schedule with Bethel of Vallejo..Redwood of Lark Spur and Haward....Mt. Diablo will not face any serious competition. but they will be tested.......
Redwood is legit i will give you that
Bethel... isnt that good
Hayward... is far removed from the NCS champion team of 3 years ago. They have a lot of talent, but werent that good last season either. Cv and CP usually schedule pretty tough non league schedules
John11112.......Bethel went 5-6 last year, but they are in a rugged league and should improve this season....Hayward went 6-4 and you are right, they have a lot of talent, it just hasn't come out like in past seasons, but can't be over looked.....Haven't seen College Parks complete preseason yet, but apparently, they are not affraid of any body.....Clayton Valley has Dublin and Liberty to name a few to start off with......with YG's new offense, we will have to wait to see just how the Warriors adjust to it and if they can make the other teams pay...
skyline hasnt been good for years, and it doesnt look like they will be anytime soon. Although the OAL is shifting lately. Mack is WAAAY down, and Castlemont has really improved over the last 3 years. Fremont , O high, and Tech are all getting better too.
CV should be able to handle Dublin and Liberty easily as well, both teams struggled last year and will most likely struggle again
Honestly none of that non league schedule stuff matters, we will find out who can play when we get to league. I think the league is good enough that any team that gets at least 3 wins in league will make playoffs... with the exception of maybe CP, just because they play in a higher division, so it might be a little tougher for them to make it in since they play in an all D-2 league.
Really CP should be moved into the BVAL which is an all D-1 league now, and then the DVAL can be an all D-2 league
College Park has been on a roll for a couple of years, but this happens to all schools...How much longer will the talent come forward is the question.....this season they will not have the offensive power they had in 2008, but they will still be tough to deal with.....Last year, their defense could not hold down several teams and they lost those shootouts....This year, their defense will improve, but they won't have the scoring ablility they had last year....The other thing is CP has a large student body to draw from which gives them a slight edge, but in the near future this will change....And another DVAL team will rise up.....
Last year in league play, College Park went 3-2 and 6-4 over all.....So as nasty as they seem, they didn't make the playoff's while Concord, Clayton Valley and Ygnacio Valley did.....their looses were to Newark 17-12...Freedom 62-41....Ygnacio Valley 36-13 and Clayton Valley 19-0.....It would appear that the Falcons will be more balanced for 2009 but without that scoring punch they had in 2008.....
Concord, YV, and CV made playoffs because they are D-2 schools
For CP to make playoffs, they need to go undefeated and win league, or maybe only one loss... 2 losses in a smaller division is what hurts them at the playoff seeding meeting. Even a few years ago when they went undefeated and won the DFAL, they were the last seed, and only got in because league champs are guaranteed a spot. Being in an all D-2 league hurts them every year at the seeding meeting
It sounds good to have an all D-I league and an all D-II league so that certain considerations don't need to be equated. So if CP goes 3 and 2 league, and YV goes 3 and 2 league, the commitee automatically picks YV becaues CP is in a higher league ? Or are there other variables ?
Camp Info
Any camp information about the DVAL teams ? Went to the San Jose Camp, CV was the only DVAL team there. CV looks good. The QB(Felbo ?) looks a little unorthadox but has a quick release. The running backs(3 that I saw, Buhager ?, Nakamura ?, and McKillit ?) have mad skills. Buhager- big and bullish, Nakamura-a smaller version of Buhager, Mckillit- very quick and usually ended up in the end-zone, all three can catch the football. The recievers, Garaventa=tall with good hands, Romos ?=speed and knows how to get open. The line looks big and strong. There defense could be very tough for teams this year as most of the secondary and half of the linebackers are returning. Although I heard that they did not win the "king of the hill" contest... which is the camp finale.
There are many variables that go into playoff selection. Your example is a little off, CP isnt battling YV for a playoff spot, they are in different divisions and therefore different brackets. What im saying is that when CP presents its case as to why they deserve to make it into playoffs being in an all D-2 league hurts them.
If you compared a 7-3 CP to another D-1 team who was 6-4, although CP has a better record, CP would almost certainly get the nod over them because of who they play, their strength of schedule would be higher because they probably play in a league with more D-1 schools. The strength of schedule is what hurts them, and Cp can argue (like a boise state) that they can only play the league schedule they are given, but still every other team in the playoff meeting is thinking they dont belong. And lets be honest, CP has made a good run the last 5 years or so, but plug them into the BVAL or EBAL (leagues where every school has equal enrollment as CP) and they win 2 games MAXIMUM in league
I do believe that if CP would have stopped YG or clayton valley and would have had a one game loss in the DVAL....They would have made the playoff's which would have made them 7-3 instead of 6-4.....four looses doesn't get you very far. Also, College Park is in the Mt diablo School dist. and the DVAL is a School dist. league which probably hinders them. College Park will just have to win their ball games if they want to enter the playoff's....
The reality of it is that if CP incurs 3 or 4 losses in a D2 league, they would most likely not go very far in the D1 playoffs anyway. They were a team on the bubble last year, but got nudged out. If they can go 8-2 or better, they may be able to make some noise come NCS.
Who is going where and when? It will be interesting to see how each team looks now. I am really curious to see the new YV offense. Anyone know if or where they are going to camp?
I know that Mt. Diablo and Concord are at the Pittsburg camp which started today. Im not 100% sure if Mt. D is there but they usually are. I was not there for the first day so I dont know how the teams did
Mt. Diablo has a kid that is a junior at 6-3 and 190 who will QB...He is fast has a strong arm..BUT this guy has issues....The Red devils also have three linemen over 300 pounds that can move plus one that is 280 that has speed...There is plenty of speed in the back field and the Red Devils could be dangerous......Mt diablo has the possibility of 50 kids turning out for 2009 season...BUT.....like in the past, they dont' show up for priactice all the time, several have a mouth that undermines the rest....And to top it off.....The alummini is dismal or almost non-exsist....All the rest of the DVAL schools have very good fund raisers and are way ahead of the game, but Mt. diablo is almost nonexsistant....There are several people who have gone way out of their way for the Red devils, such as buying the jersey's for the team and more, while the bulk do nothing.....If Mt Diablo can overcome all these problems, then it could be like old times again......
they looked pretty good. Lloyd looked pretty good at QB. Very comfortable in the pocket. Saw the next Pica, kid is huge. Overall Skills were pretty good for Concord. Their OL was a little small in some places but they did a good job moving the ball against Pittsburg
ON defense they flew to the ball. Undersized, but speedy D. They were making some plays in Pitts backfield. Overall i think they played very well considering the amount of talent Pitt has every year
I made it on Thursday for Scrimmage day. I was very impressed with Concord. Here is my break down.
-Before the scrimmage there was a 7 on 7 period. I remember the ball hitting the ground twice vs the PITT Defense in 20+ plays. Zero INTs
-During the Concord scrimmage vs Pitt I had a couple of observations. Concord always seems to have a bunch of plays ready to go without a huddle. Even though I know the coaches and I am biased, I think they do a great job with this spread no huddle offense I see college teams run on Saturdays. The Concord Def plays fast and agressive but missed tackles on a few plays. This either is poor tackling, talented Pitt players or a little of both.
-Concord Offense - QB Lloyd, polished for a Jr. QB. Has a commanding presence, is 6’3”, eyes are down field reading the Defense.Has a good grasp of the offense and is always pushing the pace of his team.Has a quick, strong arm and has decent running ability on the option run plays out of the gun. Got some ooos and aaaahhs from the Pitt sideline as he stiff-armed a DB to the ground on one running play.He did not throw any picks but took 2 sacks on long pass plays. In this offense I would be surprised if Lloyd is not a prospect for the next level after this season. Buford was not able to scrimmage but started all of last year at QB but I was told he played WR and CB during camp.Buford played very well at QB last year and gives Concord good depth at QB.
-RB-A. Pica, Jr. RB – Looks bigger than his older brother N. Pica from last year but has more RB skill.A. Pica has good vision and decent moves and an effective stiff arm.Sometimes he tries to do to many moves when he can lower his pads and run through tacklers using his size and strength.Runs a little upright and was visibly tired after long gains.Hightower, I was told, was at night school but was at the camp and did well through out the week.Hightower currently has 5 scholarship offers including Arizona from the Pac 10.I don’t think he needed a lot of carries during the scrimmage to prove himself to the coaches.
WR – C. Galindo.Very tough and aggressive.Uses his 6’4” frame very well. Was productive last year with the single coverage given to him.Caught 2 Go routes for big gains over the Pitt CB and a 79 yd gain on a slant route and was caught at the 1 yd line by Dargon(heck of a Safety for Pitt). A. Childs was also a stand out on the other side of the formation. Also very big 6’3” and very athletic.Caught a couple balls in traffic and had a nice touchdown getting one toe down in on a corner route.Runs with long strides and covers a lot of ground per step.Concord is going to cause big time matchup problems with these 2 WRs on the field.
OL - Had a mix of big and smaller players but athletic for a HS Oline. They were effective on run plays up the middle but less effective on the runs to the sides. Pitt's speed negated that. But the screen plays worked well and they were able to give time for Lloyd to pass.
Defense - Speedy but undersized. They seemed to cause blocking problems for Pitt's run game and pass protection. The Base run play's (Tailback Power, FB Dive)I saw during Pitt's Playoff game vs San Ramon did not do as well vs the Concord D. QB ran the ball for a 10 yd touch down on the Gun Option play and good gains on Dive Option plays from under center on pitches to the tail back. Pitt also had positive run plays on the missed tackles in the backfield I mentioned earlyer. Pitt had good success on a big gain off the bubble screen and second effort running from the Wr's on short pass plays. All in all I was impressed with the aggresive style of play by the younger Concord D.
Overall - Concord will not suprise anyone after being a playoff team last year. Other teams will be better prepared to play Concord after playing them last year. I do think Concord is getting better at what they do as well. The offense looks like they do a lot of things to stress the Defense. And the Concord Defense looks promising. Concord will be competitive again in the DVAL.
I hope all those little comments about Concord are true because then it will be a great game this season coming into CVs house on home coming. I doubt concord will pull it off because Cvs defence is gonna be to much for concord to handle. Forrest is the fastest guy on that offence and he is slower than the fastest guy on CVs defence. CVs linebackers are all pretty much returners from last season, and D-line is fast and strong. Anyone think pica jr can take on Bughiar, Nakamura?... Cvs defensive backs are all fast and fly to the ball. All DBs are great hitters and tacklers. Widerecievers all nearly run under a 4.9 forty, and can catch well. Fastest wideout is really fast running 4.4 -4.5 forty could be hard to stop, also including garaventa with height and speed, and romo very quick and alusive with great route runnning. Qbs are good, developing well. Cvs offence will be good, they will have a great running game with alot of power and speed. concords wideouts might have trouble with cvs corners and safetys but it will be a good matchup to watch. Cv wants it all this year and not come up empty handed like last season against Cardinal Newman.
Cant believe you got on here talkin about "4.9" WRs... thats pretty funny, "you guys are workin with some serious speed". Seriously though, The CV/ CHS should be another great game, maybe I'll make the trip out there and watch... Both teams have some weapons... Concord might take it this year, there offense looked much improved from last year, from what I saw at Pitt camp and I seriously think CVs corners will have a tough time with CHS wideouts they made Pitts corners look pretty silly and CHS slowest WR caught about 5 Go routes on them, real good technique. I say they will have a Top 3 offense in all of the east bay and CV will have a Top defense, they always do!... All the talk will be settled on the field!
concord will have one of the top 3 offences in the east bay. But yeah cv will have a great defence again this year, and will have the game speed to stop forest hightower. yall made pitt look silly, yeah why wouldnt yall be able too? Their corners are garbage. Dargan or whoever they have dont have technique or speed. I have seen pitt play many times. And last season non of our corners looked too bad against your recievers. They all made plays on the ball. Maybe i shouldnt have said the 4.9 recievers, but most of cvs guys at wideout are pretty damn fast with good game speed. If you gonna get all sarcastic with the speed thing, then put any corner yall want on our speedy track guy. He walked on forest hightower at league finals in track in the 100.
Hightower is just a gamer, who cares who beat who in track, the kid can play football and it showed last year against many teams including clayton valley. What makes you think anything will change this year? With an even more explosive concord offense, hightower will open up plays for everyone else...there will be to many guys to key on for anyone to stop them. Im not saying clayton will not have a good team i just think concord might have them this year
yeah your definitley right he is a gamer, no doubt about that. He made a nice run into the endzone. so what..... many things have changed this year. Everyone is dwelling off the fact that cv lost many great senior football players from last year. But look half of the starters were juniors on defence, and a few on the offence side of the ball last season. The younger guys can play Ball. Cv plays great smart football thats why they edged concord out last year, and because of the strength and power than carry. They keyed on many guys last season and also won. so what will the difference be this season?
I think the difference will be the Quarterback position, he is the leader. Who is claytons Qb for this year? I know Concord has 2 starting Qbs coming back that are both very talented, another reason why I believe Concord has a good shot at beating Clayton this season
yeah iv seen both of your quarterbacks play theyre pretty good no doubt about that. But cv has two pretty good qbs that can read the field with some nice height to them. so we'll see it will be a great match up no doubt about that.
Forrest Hightower ran a 4.41 40 yard dash laser time the day after that track meet at the nike combine ..now tell me who this fast cv guy is, can he even play football??...you are bringing track into a football disscussion ..Forrest averages 9.8 yrds PER carry which is by far thee best in the eastbay ...now tell me who on cv that is "supposed to be lightning" is going to stop him..this guy may be fast, but can he tackle? forrest and his explosiveness will run right through him..
who is returning from cv anyways?? the best players left.. i just think they wont be able to stop Concord this year ..they dont only have Hightower, so you can shut him down all you want, but childs their wideout will eat your db's alive..this kid is amazing right along with corey galindo ...Concord also has a reciever who is said to have the best hands in the area starnes..so name all the players worth talking about on cv??
Forrest Hightower ran a 4.41 40 yard dash laser time the day after that track meet at the nike combine ..now tell me who this fast cv guy is, can he even play football??...you are bringing track into a football disscussion ..Forrest averages 9.8 yrds PER carry which is by far thee best in the eastbay ...now tell me who on cv that is "supposed to be lightning" is going to stop him..this guy may be fast, but can he tackle? forrest and his explosiveness will run right through him..
This is the funniest thing i have ever read! Damn i cannot wait til i put a lick on this kid to shut the bloggers up. HE damn well knows i can catch him if im am in striking distance. That 4.41 isnt even accurate cuz our players went to that and their times were like 4.5s and 4.6s and i can put wheels on anyone on my team. Get off his and concords jock! i can forsure stop him, ask anyone i am a forsure open field tackler and can cover nearly any wide reciever. i doubt he will run through me! just being honest. So come bring it please this year even tho im not worried about this game yet. ima take it one week at a time and never over look any team like all yu concord ppl doo!thats why yu guys couldnt beat CASA GRANDE cuz yall were too busy thinking about your revenage on CV.
Know one will know how the match up will be until the season starts and the teams start putting up numbers. Cv lost a lot of leadership but so did Concord. Concord has a bunch of offensive fire power coming back, most of it actually, and added 2 more weapons... I dont think they will have any trouble with the Cv defense, especially at the WR position. And 40 times dont always matter, its field speed that gets you noticed, and Hightower has pleanty

eastbay charlie....what days are YV and alhambra doing the 7 on 7....I know that the Bulldogs are doing a no pads drill three times a week and i;m wondering if this is part of the no pads drills.....also...the Bulldogs are giving last years JV QB a chance to do his stuff...there could be some changes....
Calpreps.com has their rankings out for the 2009 season. These are just computer projections so they dont mean much. Since the DVAL is basically a D-2 league ill put it up. For you Falcon Fans i believe CP was ranked #10 for NCS D-1 Schools
1. Carinal Newman
2. CLAYTON VALLEY (Heritage was actually in this spot on the website, but they have moved up to D-1 in NCS)
3. Ygnacio Valley
4. Las Lomas
5. Casa Grande
6. Campolindo
7. Rancho Cotate
8. Petaluma
9. Concord
10. Carillo
11. Windsor
12. Montgomery
13. Eureka
14. Redwood
15. ukiah
16. Hayward
17. Mt. Diablo
18. Arroyo
19. San Lorenzo
20. Sonoma Valley
21. Northgate
22. Pinole Valley
23. Alameda
24. Tennyson
25. Richmond
Only school left off the list is Dublin which has just moved up to D-2 from D-3 for this season, they finally got above the threshold enrollment wise... They should go somewhere in the bottom of this list, probably around #20
Cant argue with #1 and #2, but the rest of it i think you can just throw out now. I cant imagine YV being nearly that good, and there are a lot of teams from what used to be the Redwood empire in that top 15 that i think are overated. (montgomery, carillo, windsor)
Top 12 (league champs get automatic bid) make it to the playoffs. I thought id post it and wait for everyone to chime in on their teams
you have to select CA-NCS-D2 and then each team pops up one at a time starting with #1 Cardinal Newman, then at the top there is a "next" button and you click it then it goes on to the next team. Each team has their 09 preview up
So I seen on the news that the players are going to have to pay to play so does anybody know when this will take effect and the coaches will tell the players.
Time to pony up. Looks like there will be a voluntary 300.00 donation request for football. It's a donation, title nine does not allow pay to play...so it's a donation. This will not include a 100.00 busing fee. So figure 400.00 plus all the other expenses. A cap of 600.00 will be in place for the entire school year. All schools in the DVAL (MDUSD) are in this together. The need to raise 720,000.00 ++. Other sports are less. They will range from a low as 50.00 to 300.00. A new foundaion United Mount Diable Athletic Foundation has goal of 200,000.00 to bridge the gap. Also student athletic cards will be sold for 25.00. These will also help raise funds and allow enterance into game.
Keep in mind that at this point fall sports is a go. However, if "Donations" do not come in....well....winter and spring sports may not either. Thats what I understand.
7-18-09
talk about a crisis...with money as tight as it is...This is going to be a real hardship on most players...Parents will decide my son or daughter can forgo sports..But I sure hope that some how the goals will be met...We can all thank Sacramento for this...
Remember, no one has to pay, it's not aceptable under Title 9, it is a voluntary donation. However, it is up to the athletic families to fund the sports. Two schools in the league have a large percentage of famalies in this situation. The plan is based on 75% participation, I believe thats a stretch and the 600.00 ceiling. Question is how long will the other famalies continue to pay more to subsidize the non paying families, this has been an issue that has been discussed. I hear that the district will begin to review that paperwork for those that are appling for waivers going forward. They have not been doing so in the past. All looks good for Fall sports, surely football gate revenue plays into that and should help case flow for fall sports. Now if we could only have all friday night games instead of these 3:30 afternoon games we could increase that revenue.
Bottom line is that everyone is in this together, many hand make lite work. We'll see how it goes. Personally I think it stinks and that it should be funded or a large percentage but it get very political. I can't imagine them pulling the plug if the funds aren't there, i guess well see come winter and spring. You can find proposed plan and information regarding fees and at the United Mount Diablo Athletic Foundation website @ www.unitedmtdiabloathletics.org My hats off to the volunteers at the foundation!
Eastbay charlie......How is Turner doing as the new coach at YG......I know he likes to pass, so there could be a balanced attack which the Warriors do need.
reports are good. He will have a power run game for sure, he really believes it that, but they will be much more balanced on offense. The key will be what he can develop at the QB and WR positions.
yvfan08.......If it gets down to no passing attack then Wood and Co. will most likely run the ball down the opposing teams gut.....Turner knows his stuff, so he has his work cut out for him...He still has a month to get things under control, maybe something will happen.....
I was very close to the program and I know that the O Line is nowhere near the talent that it was at last year. the Atahl brothers, One started on the O Line and D Line, the other at safety, have transfered to Freedom. So running the ball is going to be a lot harder for Patrone than everyone thinks. YV has lost a lot of talent, why they are rated so high i dont know.
Yes the JV team did pretty well last year i believe they went 7-3. A lot of their success was due to good coaching and RBs that new how to run the ball. The O Line did pretty well also. But the starting LT, which in most offenses is the best lineman, is a player that i believe suffers from hip problems. Not sure if he already has had a hip replacement or if he needs one, but he walks with a significant limp. I personally dont see the warriors doing very well this year at all. If they do it will be because of Patrone and Stephen Porchette. Also in my opinion Stephen Porchette has probably the most heart that i have ever seen out of any football player from YV in the past 5 years. The kid is a workhorse.
i agree, patrone gets all the glory, but that team last year gets 4 wins max without porshette. I think he is a better RB. He actually out gained wood against Mt. Diablo. Small stature but HUGE heart, he is a definent gamer
John11112/YGFan08......If Turner can't get a passing attack developed, then as much as every would like to see some air assaults...It may be up to Wood,Porshette and Co. to run the usual ground attack.....Turner is working on passing, so lets hope it works....
Well once calpreps found out that Josh Davis wasnt the head coach at YV their rating went down to 11.6... which is more reasonable. Also Turner has listed Patrone as a FB and Stephan Porchet as HB. Dont think having Patrone as a lead blocker rather than a main load carrier is very smart.
Yeah Josh Davis is such a great coach he makes that big a difference?? You would have to be a morone to think coach turner wont get the ball to the best players on the team. The team will definatly have a more balanced attack with contributions from more people.
I think what YV fan was getting at is that the change from Coach Davis, a coach who did make the 2nd round of the playoffs each year he was there, to a brand new head coach installing a new offense is something that will change the rating for sure. And as far as wood moving positions that does make a difference. You take a player, who in his two yrs of varsity football was an all league selection and close to 2,000 yds each time and move him to fullback is a big difference for the team. The double wing did allow many different players to create plays and get their touches. Nobody is disputing porchet's talent or heart but a player of woods caliber cannot be taken lightly. A player like that doesn't come around often
Footballfan exactly what i am saying. Patrone not only broke the single season rushing record at YV, previously held by Will Smith, but also the carreer rushing record, and he only did it in two years. Patrone Wood is the best athlete to come out of YV since Will Smith and Sione Finau, and some could argue even Chris Walsh, who was in the NFL. And yes i would think that coach davis is that good of a coach that having a new coach come into the program would drop their rating that much. Look what happened at Cal, Sanchez left and their rating went down by almost 5 points. They have 10 returning starters coming back and YV has 7. So a dropping of 11 points seems reasonable for YV. And remember Cal is a better team so their rating should not drop as much as YV. BTW Turner has said that Patrone will not be getting the majority of the carries this year, and just because you have more heart than someone doesnt mean that you are athletically better, for example Rudy. I am not saying that Porchet is not athletic i am saying that Wood is a freak of nature.
Well obviously you guys are the guru's so i will bow to your knowledge. It should be fun to watch the transition though, and i am sure the coach knows enough to get the ball to the best play makers, and maybe he will find some that we don't even know about yet.
I watched the 7 on 7 today at Martinez and it appears that the Warriors have their QB in Neshum...The kid can throw and he has receivers that can catch...This coupled with their ground attack may give YG that balance...the longest pass was about 25 yards, but neshum hit his men....Both teams had dropped balls, but YG won 6-4...YG had two interceptions and the Bulldog's had one...
YV fan is not saying that is all the warriors have, but it is true that in wood they did have a kid who almost rushed for 2,000 yds in back to back season. And while passing league may look good it is a much different game than actual 11 on 11. And the balance issue I never understood at all. The double wing produced playoff appearances 9 out of 10 yrs, 4 league titles and 2 section titles. Many other "balanced" teams cannot say the same. The same offense was brought down to clovis by former coach murphy and produced the "most dominant program of the decade" in one of the most demanding leagues in CA. Nobody cries about the lack of balance College Park has or even DLS to some extent in previous yrs ( have started to pass more recently).
I think the majic word balance applies to a lack of a QB that can throw from the doublewing...YG hasn't had a QB that could throw for a couple of years...The doublewing is one of the hardest offenses to stop and with a runner like Wood in the mix...teams are in for a long night. The 7 on 7 gives the QB about 10 seconds to throw and if not the play is over...And there is no defensive line coming at you from all sides. Its just a passing tool and I'm sure it helps the receivers run their routes and shake defenders. As for receivers, I don't have a face rooster so I don't know who these kids are...In the case of Wood, he only received two passes, but I think he should be more in the picture as he has good hands and accelerates with brute force.....If anything lets hope that Turner mixes the doublewing with his new offense.....The team is high and looking forward to the 2009 season...Turner is today and the future and the Warriors will be tough....
There are some good QBs in thie league, no doubt about that. Concord has 2 in Lloyd and Buford, NGs Barney is good as well, but i think the best QB might be from Mt. Diablo. #12 Morrow threw the ball really well at the end of last year and should lead the red devils to their best passing game in years.
Morrow has a good front line to protect him for the 2009 season and if every body shows up, Mt. Diablo could be a contender...their speedy back is in doubt as he may not be able to make his grades and will be ineligable...We will see...
CP scrimmaged Miramonte today in the heat. CP dominated the very short scrimmage. There were some obvious things that need to be worked on by CP, but it appears they have come together as a team and will put a very solid squad on the field this year.
Alhambra and Encinal facedoff in a scrimmiage Saturday evening at Martinez and in the process, alhambra's JV's stopped Encinal's JV's 2-0 in a hard fought defensive game.
The varsity game was a different story as Alhambra skinned Encinal alive 7-1 using a combination of runing and passing to do the job. Alhambra went 7 for 14 in passing plays plus two 40 yard runs back to back...Encinal went 5 for 14 with two dropped passes that could have set up scores....Encinal never quit, but Alhambra was just too much for them.
Alhambra Hosts College Park this coming Friday at Martinez and the Bulldogs should be ready.
NorCalFB....Both concord and Clayton Valley have good following...you would think that there would be a followup on what took place. Both teams appear to be pretty solid....
Antioch broke for a couple of long gains against Clayton's 'D', & thought they were handling the league champs pretty good until some of the trainers told me that their top three players were not even suited (Buhager, Nakamera, McKillip). They may have made a small difference, but three guys don't make the team. If there depth chart can handle Antioch, I think they'll have a repeat of last season.
I heard from a source that concord looked pretty solid at the las lomas scrimage. They scored 5 times against freedom and allowed one score. The first play from scrimage against san leandro Buford scrambled 40 yds for a score. I have no word on how they did agaisnt las lomas. Apparently their defense was pretty decent and that was a question mark going into the season. Should be a interesting year
The Preseason begins this friday and sat., so its time to stick my neck out and see what happens....
College Park vs. Alhambra........Alhambra 26 College Park 20....CP has a big line and will put a lot of pressure on the Bulldog QB...But the Bulldog speed and passing attack should do the job...
North Gate Vs. Dublin.......Dublin 27...North Gate 12.....The gaels have a little bite more and will use it to knockoff the Bronco's
Clayton Valley Vs. Liverty.....CV 41...Liberty 13.....The eagles begin the march to another great season..
Mt. Diablo vs Irvington.....MD 26...Irvington 13...This could be a run-a-way as the Red devils have the speed and the line and are ready for action
Ygancio Valley vs. San Marin.....YG 39....San Marin 12 The change in coaching hasn't effected the Warriors at all.....YG is ready to go...
If Pittsburg wants to claim the BVAL thrown..they have two major threats in Hertiage and Deer Valley...both teams have the guns and will be wired to stop the Pirates if they can. Any body who watched the Pittsburg Jamboree saw a QB who could make things happen for Pittsburg....this guy can move, his only problem is broadcasting his handoff's which tips the defense off as to where the ball is going and the defense has to improve in time for Sept 12th game against Grainte Bay at Folsom High School, as the grizzles are no push-over.
Pittsburg vs. Luther Burbank.....Pittsburg 33..Burbank 13...Pirate speed and hard hitting willdo the job..
Clayton Valley vs. Liberty......CV 38 Liberty 13.....The eagle first show of force
Freedom vs. Amador Valley.....AV 33...Freedom 19...this could be a wild game
Hertiage vs. Mt Carmel.....Hertiage 34..Mt. Carmel 19 This is one of the Heritage's better teams and they will be ready for action
Antioch vs. Miramonte.....Antioch 33...Miramonte 20 The Panthers have a good group of returning vets for a antioch win......
Huge night for the DVAL. Those look like some explosive offenses. Kudos to NG with 56 points and a W to start the season. If YV can get by San Marin tomorrow, the DVAL will have a clean sweep in week 1.
This should be a pretty competative year for the DVAL. I think that most of the teams are pretty close this year and ther wont be a standout undefeated like clayton last year.
Clayton did lose some big players, but there always big and competative and I think Nakamura will lead that defense pretty well.
YV did lose some seniors that helped there offense move, but if there going to be good this year its not going to be partrone but the backups because patrone seeing from last year doesn't have the stamina to carry that whole team every game. Well see.
Concord with yet another year of experience in the spread should be exciting. There line is new as they only have one returning starter and a junior with some experience, well see how good an o-line coach hamilton is as he has a big test in front of him. If llyod starts at QB then we might see buford and hightower at the corners and that should help out with some speed. There young but have some talent.
Cp is always fast and the triple option offense is always tough to defend. I know they lost danska and shrader which are two big losses but they are always competative and put lots of points on the board.
MD seeing from last year are very fast and have some important players returning. They didnt get pushed around last year and they beat YV which proves the toughness. Lets see how the fly offense works this year.
NG I dont really know much about i heard they had a pretty solid jv team but that doesnt really mean much because its a much different level on var. I think the wing T is a offense of the pass and wont do so well with all the new techniques to stop it.
i think its a toss up this year but i think itll end up
1.cv/concord 2.cv/concord 3. yv 4. mount 5. cp 6. northgate
Mr. HighSchool 101.....College Park walked all over Alhambra with their blistering offense as the Bulldog's defense was pushed all over the place and the falcon offense ran wild....the score was 37-14......
The red devils pulled out the win against Irvington. They made a lot of mistakes on both sides of the ball... Looks like early season mistakes that can be fixed, fumbled snaps and some missed assignments but the O moved the ball the whole night, and got a few long runs from Turner (80 yards) and from Anderson (50 yard TD). The D looked stellar, bend but dont break. The D really locked it up when Irvington got into the red zone. The MD DL has some studs! Mt. D really needs to fix the little errors if they want to win when it comes to league play, but they have the talent to play with anyone.
A buddy of mine went to the Concord-De Anza game tonight. he called me and said it was over before it began, Concord just ran through them and it was never close
DVAL 5-0 tonight... YV takes on San marin tomorrow to go for 6-0...
Hands down, most competitive league around!!! im not saying the best league, but the best race for the league title. The league is good top to bottom, i thought NG wouldnt be very good but their win against Dublin tonight makes them look a little bit more for real.. DVAL is solid from 1-6...no easy games in league play
Cal......was Wood and Porchet switching off in the back field, or was Porchet doing the bulk of the work?? The passing game can be brutal and it looks like it paid off for the Warriors...
Porschet was doing the bulk of the work, he had more carries. Wood had a long 75 yard TD run called back due to penalty. All 5 TD's scored by different players, Wood, Porschet, Patolo, Jones, Doss. Both Porschet and Wood also played defense periodically, Porschet with an interception and great play at DB.
Congratulations are in order for Coach Turner and staff and the work the kids put in learning a new system.
The DVAL is going to be tough, it's nice to start with a win.
saw the YV San Marin game... YV looked fairly good. After watching the game i am fully convinced Porchet is better than Wood... Wood might have gotten over 100 but never broke anything too big... just 5 a pop. Porchet continually shredded the D for huge chunks of yards.
I was surprised by San Marin... Ill give YV their credit, but San Marin is baaad.... i saw zero athletes on the team, had a couple decent sized kids, but just very little talent.
"just 5 a pop" is pretty good! I think most coaches would take that and call it their star back. Porschet did have a good game, but I think Wood has a few BIG games in him. Hard to judge based on one game.
Cal......At five yards a play, you can march down the field and control the clock...sooner or later a big play will materialize...the warriors are going to be tough....And what a surprise at North Gate.....I thought this might be their year, but i wasn't sure...It appears that the DVAL will have one crucial game after another when league play begins...I bet, that Wood will make his mark....both Porschet and Wood are a great one-two punch.....
yeah, that 5 yards and cloud of dust theory is what helped make the wing work so well. Opponents never had the ball. Problem with the wing is that if they got behind late, every team west of the Mississippi knew they had to throw-- and defended accordingly. It was a tall order for a QB and receivers that had virtually no real-game experience throwing and catching to be called on to pull a rabbit out of their hat to save the game. Many times I've been in the stands and heard things like "the QB sucks" after he was literally pitching the ball for 3.75 quarters without incident and then asked to launch a Hail Mary to save the game in the waning seconds. That wasn't fair to the QB.
While I don't necessarily think that a "balanced attack" is necessary to win in high school, I like that the new offense at YV has more balance than the tremendously lopsided wing attack. In my opinion the very real threat of the throw will actually allow Wood and Porschet to rack up bigger numbers than a constant offense of pitches off tackle sprinkled with a few incomplete passes every game. Nesheim looked good at QB, he has some zip on the ball and many times went to the 2nd or 3rd receiver.
Cal.....I watched Nesheim at the YG/Alhambra passing game and he had Alhambra off balance the whole time and he was hitting people on all sides of the field...Turner and the team will be fun to watch...I don't think any body will be unhappy...
I won't be one to say "I told you so," Drake, but Northgate's 56 against Dublin should be proof enough we were right and you were wrong. I think they were down 21 zip before they turned it up a notch and blew Dublin away. What a character win. It wasn't too long ago they took 10 years to score over 50 points!
Do you really think Drake is still coming on here reading the posts? I haven't seen him on here in a long time. I guess this is as good a place as any for the "I told you so" though. Good job by the Broncos!
Interesting to note about NG's win, is that Dublin got two long kick-off returns for TD's included in their 35 points. It was 28-7 before Northgate went on to score 7 TD's to Dublin's 1, which was one of their K.O. returns. That's pretty good defense for NG, so maybe they should just kick it out of bounds? LOL
They must be running that double tight (double wing), or whatever you call it, but their QB, Barney, went 9-14-1-142, including TD passes of 15 and 48 according to the boxscore. Those are great passing numbers for an NG qb.
I saw the Frosh game on Thursday, and NG was outmatched by Dublin. Dublin looked quicker and had a nice passing game, but being the first game, they might have been just better prepared. That NG offense takes a while to execute properly. Lots of fumbles.
Well Friday night will be here FAST. Here are my predictions for this weeks games
Clayton Valley vs Dublin- CV 42, Dublin 7... The eagles should roll the Gaels... If Dublin is able to keep it close at all, it would show us Clayton wont be having anywhere near another dream season. But Clayton should beat them easily
Mt. Diablo vs San Lorenzo- MD 28, San Lorenzo 7... Mt. D has a very tough defense, and has some good athletes in Turner and Anderson. They should break a few big plays each and the red devils will win.
Concord vs Jefferson- Concord 56, Jefferson 6... Concord could probably put up 100 if they wanted, Jefferson is just bad. Easy win for the minutemen
Northgate vs Galileo- NG 35, Galileo 14... San Francisco football is horrible, NG should beat them
Ygnacio Valley vs Bethel- Bethel will have some athletes but YV should be better... YV could struggle with Bethels athleticism but they should still win. YV has to beat them to prove they are for real.
College Park vs Serra- CP 14, Serra 35... Not sure why Cp scheduled this game, Serra should blow them out. If Cp can keep it close then they should win the DVAl easy
Overall i think the DVAl will go 5-1 this week... CP being the only loss. The 5 teams i have down as winning need to prove their strength and beat the schools, because they will all be viewed as the favorites. if any of those schools slip up, i think they will likely struggle in league as well...
the DVAl is no joke, most competitive league around in my opinion
I would like to see teams in the DVAL schedule harder Non-League games as last weeks games where against Very weak teams and again this week except for College Park
going 6 & 0 as a league against teams that have minus rankings in calpreps isnt impressive and until teams start scheduling 2 or 3 Tough teams ( Pitt, San Ramon Valley, Monte Vista, Foothill or teams like those) then the DVAL will be viewed as weak unfortuently
Concord plays San ramon Valley (9/25) and Collepe Park plays Serra this week and I congratulate them on scheduling a tuff game and would like to see other teams schedule 1 or 2 Tuff games

The big surprise is North Gate, I don't think that everyone thought that the Bronco's would come on so strong...It took them two quarters to get rolling and with Barney at the lead NG just exploded..Look for more of the same this Friday night...
Clayton Valley vs. Dublin......CV 31....Dublin 13....the Eagle defense did their job against Liberty last week and now its time for the offense to get rolling...
Concord Vs. Jefferson........Concord 41...Jefferson 6 The minutemen put up the points on a weak San Francisco team..
Mt. Diablo Vs. San Lorenzo.....MD 34...SL 12...The Red devils unleash the scoring machine and are backed by a tough defense..
North Gate Vs. Galileo.....NG 44 Galileo 13....the Minutemen start early and never look back
College Park Vs. Serra.....Serra 38...College Park 14...Serra gave DLS a rough time last week while the Falcons were taking care of Alhambra....This Friday night, things are reversed, but it will be a good test for College Park..
Ygnacio Valley Vs. Bethel.....YG 28...Bethel 19....Bethel lost a lot to grad, but are nortorious for having speed, but with the Warrior run and passing and defense, YG should do the Job...
BVAL Friday/Sat. Pridictions
Antioch Vs. Granada.....Antioch 28 granada 19......the Panthers wake up after last weeks loss and finally play ball....
Liberty Vs. Livermore.....Livermore 20.....Liberty 12.....the cowboy's hit the win column with their first solid game...
Freedon Vs. Berkeley.....Berkeley 41...freedom 7......The yellowjackets give Freedom another rough Friday night...
Heritage Vs. St, Marys....Heritage 44...st. Mary's 12...The Pat's are more then a match for St. Mary's...
Sat.
Pittsburg Vs. Granite Bay.....Granite Bay 32...Pittsburg 19....the grizzlies gave Grant a battle before loosing 22-19 last year...this year GB who lost most of last years team has a new crop and are big and fast....Pittsburg can't afford pentalies like last week and wil have to play their best game..
Deer Valley Vs. Washington.....Washington 38...Deer Valley 20.....Last week the Huskies just kept coming back until they beat California....the question is will DV be ready Friday night...
Some teams should step up their pre-season scheduling, but many teams will not schedule CV. If you are a D1 team and lose to a D2 team your play off chances are blasted, and many D2 teams will not play a powerhouse like the Eagles. It is about time that CP steps up and plays some D1 teams and bolster their playoff resumes.
Quick note on Concord's pre-season schedule
Jefferson is picked to win their league this year and in fact received votes for the top 15 in their region this week
Castlemont is picked to win the OAL this year
And of course they are traveling to San Ramon
Also of interest according to Calpreps a game between San Lorenzo and Jefferson would be a 1 touchdown game, 21-14 SL.
I know this has become a haven for the hoards of Mt D fans to fan the flames of their best team in a decade but lets be honest this is a 2 boat race CV and College Park.
Saw the Jefferson game last year... horrible, if they are picked to win their league then they are literally in the worst league in the state.
Castlemont should be pretty good, maybe not quite as good as last years team overall, but a pretty good HS team. and SRV is predicted to finish only ahead of Livermore in their league. This isnt the SRV of the last 5 years, they dont have the talent of last years team.
CP stepped up a little bit getting Serra, but their rivalry game hurts them. I understand Alhambra is the rivalry game, but seriously that win is laughable to an NCS committee. CP already is the only D-1 in an otherwise all D-2 league, so their league strength of schedule goes way down. And then scheduling a D-3 school in Alhambra just does not help them.
Antioch and Washington and Freedom are good games for them. Scheduling Serra is stepping it up big time, but i think too much. Serra is just at a different level i think.
And im not sure how many teams are afraid of CV... I still think they are the league favorites but finding out that game was 7-7 in the 4th against a very bad Liberty team tells me maybe the Eagles arent quite as good as everyone has been thinking
2legit2quit......didn't CV have a rough time with Liberty last year before they got rolling...It would appear that the eagles were having teething problems just like last year....We will see if the eagles come into their own Friday night against Dublin..
I can understand why teams might shy away from scheduling CV, but to start the season against Liberty and Dublin? What does that do to their strength of schedule? If CV doesn't beat Dublin by 4 scores, it will be a moral victory for the Gaels.
That's ok, as long as your prediction of 44 - 13, Broncos over Galileo-FigaroMagnifico is correct. The NG freshman lost 14-0 to the Tamalpais Red Tailed Hawks today. They've yet to score a TD in 2 games. It's a learning process for the freshman, so getting that offense going probably takes a while because it relies so much on crisp execution. When the varsity runs it, I can't even spot who has the ball. When the freshman run it, it's easy to spot the ball, because oftentimes it's on the ground. Once they get the hang of it, they will do much better. The freshman have some size and some athletic kids. They are just so bunched up right now they can't seem to create any holes or confuse the defense. The NG defense was pretty good except for a couple big plays that Tamalpais got because they run a spread offense and they got some holes.
That was a nice road trip though, Tam is a pretty high school and they didn't charge at the gate!
I'm going to watch Northgate play O.J. Simpson's alma mater today.
Hey, I didn't know until I read the paper today there's a High School team down the Peninsula named "Capuchino." Then I read a story about DLS, and learned there's a team named "Bosco," - like the old chocolate syrup drink I liked as a kid. If Bosco and Capuchino ever meet in a national playoff game, they could call it the Breakfast Drink Bowl! LOL!
Northgate 28, Galileo 18. The Broncos have a great one-two punch with Stover and Butler at running back, plus Barney is really athletic. He broke away from an almost certain sack and ended up picking up about 25 yards. He can be elusive and they have a really good kicker, Levy, I think his name is. That was really the difference as NG made all 4 extra points and the Lions missed their 3 two point trys putting them behind 2 scores at times giving NG some breathing room.
Galileo had one RB that was really great and a QB that was good and could throw too, so it was close most of the game. I don't think NG turned it over at all, and Galileo had a big fumble at the end that sealed it.
With NG competitive now, the DVAL will be a really fun league to watch. They have Las Lomas next week in the battle of the Creek.
Saw the Jefferson game last year... horrible, if they are picked to win their league then they are literally in the worst league in the state.

And i dont think its just a 2 team race. Concord looks very strong, and even YV and NG had impressive performances. The league is solid top to bottom, the DVAl going 6-0 last week proves that.
It is so competitive that i could honestly see there being a 3 way tie for 1st with a few schools beating up on eachother and having 3 teams tied at 4-1 or something
"CP stepped up a little bit getting Serra, but their rivalry game hurts them. I understand Alhambra is the rivalry game, but seriously that win is laughable to an NCS committee. First off, scheduling Serra was absolutely brilliant. If CP loses by a big margin (like they are predicted to) to Serra, it doesn't hurt them. If they keep it close or actually win the game (this is high school football and anything can happen) they can hang their hat on this game come seeding meeting time for NCS.
CP has scheduled by far the toughest non-league opponents of any team in the DVAL. They have four Division 1 teams in their preseason schedule. Even though they have no choice in the league they are forced to play in, it comes down to either winning the league championship or going 7-3 at worse to make playoffs. If they can happen to pull off a 9-1 or 8-2 season, I believe with their strength of schedule you could see a top 6 seed. Have to assume a loss to Serra, which means have to beat an improved Washington team, beat Antioch & Freedom (CP favored on paper), then win 4 of 5 games in league play. Easier said than done, but a very realistic scenario.
Cp does have the toughest non league schedule in the DVAL... thats because they have to...
They need to get as many D-1 wins as they can. And i disagree that if they go 8-2 or 9-1 they would be a top 6 seed. Remember the undefeated team of 2006 that won the DFAL? That team got the #8 seed, the final spot in the playoffs, and had they not got the automatic birth for winning their league, they might have been left out.
They should go 4-1 before league, cant see see them beating Serra this weekend. But theys hould handle Antioch, Washington, and Freedom. Washington is probably the toughest game out of these 3, but Antioch isnt very good and Freedom is way down compared to the team that beat Cp last year
I think every every DVAL team will have a winning record by the time league play starts.
I see CV going 5-0, Concord going 5-0/4-1, CP going 4-1, YV going 5-0/4-1, MD going 5-0/4-1, and NG going 4-1
I agree with CP Alum especially after viewing the ratings on calpreps. CP by far has the toughest non league. The calpreps numbers right now show mostly what a team did last year wich is all the coaches can go off of when scheduling a game for this year. Also remember that a ton of the games scheduled were Home and Home series scheduled 3 years ago so a lot could change with those teams after the years go by. This is what I gathered from calpreps.
-CP plays all 5 non league games vs teams with positive ratings including 3 games vs teams with a 20+ rating usually a power house team.
-YV plays 3 games vs teams with a Positive rating.
The concord, Jefferson game might be a little better than last year considering that jeffersons Jv team was pretty dang good and beat concords Jv pretty easily. Concord should still get the win but it might be a little closer than most think
Just got back from the game. CP appeared nervous and intimidated from the get go. 1st play from scrimmage Serra throws a 92 yard touchdown. After a 3 & out Serra drives down field and scores. 14-0 half way through 1st quarter.
CP wakes up and starts playing some solid football after that. CP made it 14-7 in the 2nd quarter, but the ensuing kickoff was ran back for a td by Serra. 20-7 at half.
CP drives down the field to start the 3rd quarter only to get in the redzone and turn the ball over on downs. After a fumble by Serra, CP frives down the field again, but turns the ball over themselves. After hold Serra to a 3rd and long, CP gives up a 70 yard td pass.
Take away 2 long touchdowns play and a major miscue on special teams, CP matched up with Serra very good anbd gave them all they could handle.
When YV scored their passing TD's did they do it out of that double tight offense they run, or did they change and line up in a spread formation? I'm guessing they did it out of their usually double tight formation and caught the defense off-guard, which is quite a weapon to have.
The reason I ask, is Northgate always runs the ball to in that double tight offense, however, at least twice during the first half they lined up in a pro set with 2 wide outs. They still ran the ball though, and made quite a few yards on each play. I thought I was seeing things, but they probably confused the defense and it worked. They didn't do it at all in the 2nd half that I can remember, although, they did attempt maybe two passes out of the tight formation.
It's funny because the fans really get all excited when they try a pass, and I'm sure it's the same for YV fans. Fans like the passing game, but as long as you win, that makes it all ok if you don't pass the ball.
YV isnt running the same offense they had since the 98 season. They have a new coach running a new offense. But does it really matter what the fans like? Sure fans like to see a passing game but really that doesnt matter. If a team can win by running the ball 99% of the time then the W's should only matter. Look at the two years YV won NCS, 99 and 05. They passed the ball, maybe, 5 times a game. If DLS ran the ball that much and still won their 151 games people would not say a thing about the passing game. W's is what matters not the run to pass ratio.
I agree! At NG most people are just happy they made a coaching change after too many dismal seasons of losing. Nobody is going to get greedy and ask to throw a pass once in a while. Just getting a W every so often is the important thing. Some people said NG could never get enough athletic kids on the team to be competive, but most of us knew that was hogwash. Winning games made everything better and the parents and fan support is totally positive now.
I wasn't aware YV changed their offense up, but I'll see it when they play NG on Oct. 17th and hopefully the Broncos will give them a good game.
De La Salle wins because they have great athletes. If they ran the double wing the best skilled players would not be attracted to the school. YV won using the double wing system, and it is a valid system, but not attractive to the top athletes of today. If YV has made the change to a more pro style offense I believe they will be able to attract better atheletes to their program. YV is not going to attract the top QB's and WR's unless they change from the double wing. Getting players at those positions also means you get more speed and ability in your defense as well.
While some high school athletes may be apt to transfer to a different public school based on a coach's system, I really doubt that YV's success hangs in the balance of what system they run in order to attract better athletes. For the most part, they will still get the vast majority of public school athletes that live in their boundaries.
DLS is a different story however. Their entire program's success is contingent on being able to attract top athletes to come to the school. If all the top area athletes suddenly found their public schools were better options for them (presumably Lad would have to have left), and they all stayed at their local public schools, it would make a much bigger difference in DLS's success. Part of what Lad has done at that school is to make DLS attractive to top athletes, and he has done an excellent job at that. You can argue about whether they recruit until the cows come home, but you can't argue that they they don't make it attractive to top athletes to play football at DLS.
As has been said, YV doesn't run the wing formation anymore. There was talk that for the very first play on offense this season they would line up in the wing formation just as an homage to the past, but they didn't. Coach Turner and his staff have the kids showing MANY different offensive sets to the defense.
In years past YV would run the wing and that was that. If they had a good QB and some speedy receivers it made no difference, they were going to run the wing. If they had a big line they'd win, but if the line was small then that year was going to be a long one. The coaches would never make an adjustment to exploit the kids they did have, they just tried to mold kids to the offense rather than mold the offense to the kids. It seems like Turner (although it is very early to really be able to tell) makes adjustments based on the talent of the kids in the system rather than forcing them into a system he has decided on.
Also, it's not necessarily all about the W's as has been said. It might be that way for the coaches and staff at some schools, but that completely leaves out the kids. Sure, the kids don't want to lose, but they also want to have fun and enjoy themselves. Forcing the kids into a miserable offense that nobody wants to run and nobody wants to watch really takes a lot of the fun of high school football out of the process.
College Park vs Washington- Cp put up a TON of points against washington last year, not as much talent but this TEAM looks better to me than last years. CP 42 - Wash 21
Concord vs Skyline- Should be an easy win the concord, Lloyd will throw for 4+ TDs. Skyline will have some athletes but concord should blow them out. Con 49 - Skyline 13
Mt. Diablo vs De Anza- Although MD struggled last week, only beating San Lorenzo by a TD they should win easy this week. DA has yet to score this year. Turner should rip right through the De Anza Defense... MD 49 - De Anza 0 (maybe they get a late TD against the back ups and make it 49-6
Clayton Valley vs Irvington- Clayton should blow them out. Clayton 35 - Irvington 0
YV vs Redwood- Redwood beat YV last year but Redwood isnt nearly as good as they were a year ago. YV 28- Redwood 17
Northgate vs Las Lomas- NG is improved, Barney, Stover, and Butler can play! but i just cant see NG coming close to beating Las Lomas... LL 42 NG 14
YV wins 34-14. No particularly outstanding players this game, a well rounded effort. Strong performances by Porschet and Wood. Very few passing yards by either team.
TERRIBLE officiating at this game, the refs were roundly booed a number of times. It really is a shame that the refs can become so much of the game, especially on calls that are of absolutely no consequence to the play happening in front of them. YV could surmise that they have a serious penalty problem from this game, but since they were relatively clean the first two games and the officiating was so bad today, I don't think the problem was with YV.
Hey 001, where's the scores? I watched the USC game instead of going to the Battle of the Creek, so I was hoping to see who won. I'll have to open that paper in front of me and look for the Sports page now.
Never mind, LL won 35-10. I see Northgate tried to make a comeback, but that 3rd quarter scoring drive took 13 min, 44 seconds. In a 6 quarter game, Broncos win!
Sorry, I gotta be quicker to get you those scores so they are available before you get around to opening the morning paper. LL is still a formidable opponent, but NG is making some headway and at least made a game out of it this year. How did the Frosh do BJ?
i dont want to get into debating who will built who in the DVAL, instead i want to point out the overall strength of the DVAL... This is one tough league!!!
CV 3-0
Con 3-0
MD 3-0
YV 3-0
NG 2-1 )1 loss is to Las Lomas, perennial playoff power house)
CP 1-2 ( 2 losses are to 2 of the best teams in the bay area)
the DVAL is currently sitting at 15-3 overall, with the 3 being to teams who will make playoffs this year and probably win their leagues.
Concord will get a chance to show what they have this week against always tough SRV. If they can take down the Wolves, it would be a statement that they are the team to beat this year in the resurgent DVAL. Each week will be a war in this league.
YV 28 vs Hayward 21-Patrone and steven finds a way to get that W
concord 14 vs San Ramon Valley 35- Concord has a good team this year but cant see concord beating SRV yet.... but its high school football anything can happen! good luck concord
college park 35 vs Antioch 21 - CP struggled against Serra, washington but gets back on track and gets a W
Jefferson 14 vs North gate 28 - NG lost to a good team last week but stover, butler steps it up this week and gets their runnin game back and drills jefferson
CV 22 vs Vintage 14- I dont really know much about vintage but uglies gets it done at home
MD 21 vs Kennedy 14 MD has a great D line and Offense is getting better every week..they get a win
As of Concord vs SRV.. i think concord has good athletes to compete against SRV but they need to come out with some fire and play with a desire or SRV will try to take over fast ...
There are two tough games this week and the main game will be Concord facing San Ramon, don't let anybody fool you, the minute men will put the wolves back to the wall...SR has a good JV team to feed off, but they are no where near the team they were last year, but they have a QB that stands 6-4 and can throw....This should be a wild game And what about Ygnacio Valley facing Hayward...this should be a real test for the warriors....
College Park vs. Antioch.......CP 28..Antioch 14....although the Panthers have been shoved around, they will make a game of it
Ygnacio Valley Vs. Hayward....YG 32..Hayward 28...the key to this game is the Warrior line D and O...If they can get the job done then YG will win....
Mt. Diablo vs. Kennedy of Sac....MD 41...Kennedy 13...the Red devil speed hits high gear
Concord Vs. San Ramon......SR 30....Concord 19....If the Minute men's speed can hit high gear, the wolves could be in for a scary night..
Clayton Valley Vs. Vintage.....SV 40...Vintage 12...the Eagles are too much for vintage
North Gate Vs. Jefferson (Daly city)... NG 19 Jefferson 14....the Bronco's have to use every trick in the book to win this one.....
001, the NG frosh lost big to Las Lomas last week after their 3rd game of being shut out, but they scored their first 2 TD's yesterday against... how did that annoying PA announcer say it?... Oh yeah, "The mighty California Fighting Grizzleys!" Geez, do they rub it in, or what? They have bleachers on both sides and even the endzone, concession building, 16 freshman cheerleaders, lights, PA announcer (who actually does a great job, but needs to turn it down just a notch) LOL. NG doesn't have that stuff... yet. They also have 3 times the number of kids on the team. The frosh were way overmatched as there's some athletic young kids on CAL, a QB who can really throw too. It was 21 - 0 after about 3 minutes, which most of us NG parents missed because we didn't know how to get in the stadium so we broke down a piece of plywood barrier by the Aquatics Center ((YES, I SAID AQUATICS CENTER!, BEAUTIFUL TOO!) and stormed the place. It was 28-0 after the first quarter, and ended up 41 - 12, but the NG kids were thrilled to finally score some points nonetheless. They had fun this game. That made it easier for the parents who went home with their ears ringing, bruised egos, and some slivers in their fingers.
9-25-09
Bazooka joe.......If North Gate lost 41-12, it looks like a long season for the Frosh.....alhambra Frosh beat so. city 64-14 Thursday so there are a lot of ups and downs and the future for North Gate doesn't look good for the next few years. these kids have to shake the loss off and get them selves focused and i'm sure they won't want to be the wipping boy in the league in the future..
Great game by the Warriors. Jones had 3 TD catches and a total of 125 yards on 7 catches. Wood had 167 rushing and a TD, Porschet had 99 yards rushing and a TD. Nesheim had a nice game.
Another nice effort by the Warriors. Now they have a week off and then Oakland Tech. Hopefully it will NEVER be that hot again.
One official went down prior to the half and did not return due to heal related issues, and a Hayward band member fainted in the parking lot due to overheating.
9-26-09
Cal.....good for the Warriors......it must have been miserable playing as well as watching the YG victory...Haward is on the rise again and to stop the Farmers in that heat says a lot for YG
I saw both Northgate games in San Francisco. Those boys are undersized, but that offense makes up for it.
I also saw the the JV team play, and boy did they play. A Jefferson team that had not given up more than six points all season found themselves down 28-0 at one point. Except for the last two drives of the game where Jefferson started airing the ball out left and right, the Nothgate jv D kept shutting these guys down. A couple very explosive backs complimented a fairly sized (well, for their age) O-Line, but the quarterback is nothing to write home about. The frosh team might be struggling, but this sophomore class will provide excellent depth for an experienced team next year.
That's good to know the NG JV's are doing well too like the varsity. The freshman are struggling, but that offense probably takes a while to get the execution where it needs to be. The freshman QB got hurt on one of the first plays of the season, and just returned to the line-up last weekend. They have one kid who is really standing out though, Jimmy Sharpe. He has great speed and is one to watch that could be another top notch RB like Stover is now on the Varsity. When NG couldn't do anything, he broke out of the pack for about 70 yards, breaking a tackle about halfway downfield. On defense, he gets some sacks running the QB down and is really active. He's one to watch develop over the next few years as one of the bright spots on the freshman.
Bazooka Joe.......Is Stover a junior or a senior on the varsity and i'm wondering how many juniors will carry over to the 2010 campaign....also, is Jimmie Sharpe big enough to move to varsity if need be for the 2010 season???
Will they really need Sharpe? They return Stover, Butler, and Boukis at RB and Perry and Stewart at FB. Not to mention Han and Schmidt; both averaging over 100 yards a game rushing...a lot of "horses" will be in the Bronco backfield next season.
Also, Juniors are Perry, O'Connor and Weeks. A Sophmore LB is Hamilton. The Broncos only loose 8 Seniors who are major contriubtors. Don't forget the JV team which is 3-1 outcoring opponents 121-42.
Sophmore who will contribute next year include: Hockel, Hofer, Khamosh, Ioane, Schmidt, Han, Wise, Ryan and Egger. They are also a talented group which will mean big things in the future for Northgate.
This week none of the DVAL teams will be tested, but that doesn't mean that they will be relaxed....Last week's shocker saw Antioch hang in there and stop college Park and no body expected that...But that won't happen this week....
Mt. diablo Vs. Oakland tech....Mt. diablo 26....Oakland tech 13......both teams have the speed, but the Red Devils have the defense to back it up
College Park Vs. Freedom ....College Park 35...Freedom 12...CP recovers from last weeks loss and puts the heat on freedom..
Clayton Valley Vs. North Salinas.....Clayton Valley 32....North Salinas 13 last preseason game to prepare for theleague opener....North salinas has been taking a series of big losses and it won't stop with the Eagles...
Concord Vs. Castlemont......concord 39...castlemont 19......This is one game that the Minutemen have to stay focused...Oakland teams have a bad habit of surprising you...
Jake111.....One of the guys brought this up several months ago and we will see this spreading to other area's....If we ran our finance' like the State of Calif. does we would all be bankrupt...the schools are getting the short end of the stick on money and its going to get worse....The 2010 season could be gone......And i doubt a great manyof the kids families can forkout this kind of money....
Bluedog, I'm glad other people answered your question about NG. I sure hope they have football, because NG sounds like they could have a few very good years with all those players coming back. I guess the varsity didn't play, but I heard the QB Barney was banged up a bit? Not sure if that's true.
The Frosh beat Bishop O'Dowd last Thursday 24-22. They got their starting QB back now and are running the offense better. They didn't turn the ball over during O'Dowd. You can always use a guy like Jimmy Sharpe. He runs hard and is hard to bring down. He's good on defense, so you could play him there or just about anywhere else and he will help you. It's still a little early to write this group of freshman off too, because of the complexity of that offense. They need to defend against the pass better, but the offense is improving each week. I'm sure for a lot of them, as is the case with my son, it's their first time playing any kind of football. Shoot, Cal High had a youth league football team practicing on their baseball field, and then they all came over to watch the 2nd half of the freshman game. Those kids can't wait to play at the next level under the big lights. My kid's still figuring out which way his girdle pad goes. LOL!
Bazooka Joe.......I've seen a number of Frosh teams that looked awful, but by mid season they came together...and other times frosh teams looked like total failure's, but the following year they were holy terrors....some times its hard to gauge a player or a team as they bloom at different times...with these kids returning and more coming up who knows what will happen....Go Bronco's

What bothers me is that football somewhat gets a bye in that it is one of the sports that start the school year and they do generate some funds, but, if the players don't come up with the money that is requested, the other sports after Fall will be cut because of lacking funds. I have heard that some (not all) of the senior parents won't pay because their students are not going to playing any other sports. That doesn't seem fair the players in Winter and Spring sports will not be able to play. I really hope that this doesn't happen.
Just a footnote: didn't we vote serveral years ago for the California Lottery to offset the cost of after school sports and activities. At least thats what we were told. Than the State Goverment found a loop hole and moved the funds into the educational general funds to replace other funds that they took out of education funds.
Both football and basketball generate the majority of the funds that support other sports, but as big as some of the gate funds are, its not enough....Every sport has on going fund raisers...especially the girls sports except for Basketball where their are no gate funds and this includes basball and the rest of the sports for both boys and girls....And some of the football games i've been to for the home team...The stands may have only 20 percent filled which is total lack of support and a killer to support the other sports. So everybody involved in sports has to help in some way or the 2010 season may not be....One thing that can be done is to flood Sacramento with letters stating that the school funding has to be increased not ripped off....that the schools need help now.....
Gate is a reflection of the facilities. Lack of Friday NIGHT games has a huge effect on gate reciepts. Half the schools have subpar facilities. YV, NG, CP, though each has a field none have any supporting facilities. This means game must be held on Saturdays if you want JV & Var to play the same DAY. When games are at home, JV plays on ThursDAYS and Var plays on friDAYS at 3:30 until next week were they go at 3:00...great for attendence. No to mention the revenue lost because of the start time. SaturDAYS would be better I guess, but thats a busy day. Now....friday NIGHT is best. More kids, more parents, grandparents, friends ect ect. They pay the $8.00 bucks to get in, spends a few bucks at concessions, head out after the game to thier favorite restaurant and spend a few more. I just hope the district will see the value, personally I just can see sports going away, what an embaressment for the mdusd and more importantly, what a blow that would be for the entire Diablo Valley community.
HSFBFAN..........Most of the teams in Oakland and Richmond face the same problem, but they also face a lot of trouble for night games.....Saturday's would be good for the game as the Jv could start at 10A.M. or ! P.M. followed by the Varsity....and during the Sept. months you could face a blazing sun which most fan's would not be too happy about....But when fan's got use to Sat. games, things could change...maybe....To light the fields for night games at today's prices would cost big bucks....Its a shame that there not a few more Slat's around that helped put the lights up at Clayton Valley...Down at Salinas, Palma plays on Sat.'s a lot and the Frosh,Jv and the Varsity play in that order for a nice day of high School football....
Only two games scheduled this week and both teams will have their hands full.......North Gate takes on River city of West Sacramento and Ygnacio Valley meets Oakland Tech....River City plays rough football but are not cruded while Oakland Tech has plenty of speed for the Warriors to deal with....
Ygnacio Valley Vs. Oakland Tech......YG 27...OT 19.....the Warrior combination of passing and running is hard to beat....
North Gate Vs. River City.......NG 28....River City 13......The Bronco's will be kept busy Friday night, but the new Bronco's show they can win.....
Northgate's football facilities suck. Granted they got the track and field turf done along with the scoreboard, but they are way behind the curve when compared to Las Lomos, Acalanes, Cal High, CV, etc.
During Sat games, they only have temp bleachers on one side, the East, so both teams fans sit together staring right into the sun. The PA announcer has a cord stretching across the bleachers from the bottom to the top row, where he sits, so people moving in and out are tripping over it. The concession is a couple folding tables where you might get something hot if a parent happens to bring a crock pot full of meatballs on a stick. If you got to go visit the porta potties, you can expect to get a million of those little burrs in your tennies and will spend the rest of the 2nd half picking them out from the bottom of your shoes. This is a Walnut Creek school, WTH?????
Now we are faced with raising the balance of the money to complete the bleachers and lights and supporting facilities while worrying about having enough district money to keep the football program, and on top of all that, the neighbors are complaining about the Environmental Impact Report being inadequate. Probably because it failed to mention the burrs!
I'd think these lights would be a non-starter right now due to the economics of the MDUSD athletic program. What's the point of fundraising and fighting for lights when there is a real possibility there won't be any high school athletics after football and the other fall sports are over?
Maybe the NG light fund can kick some cash down to the UMDAF to ensure sports for everybody. Lighting up an empty field seems a bit silly.
Never mind the $100,000+ that the CV AD went out and got from a single donor. Nope, it's all NG, all the time. I'm so sorry you have to put up with the rest of the trash in the MDUSD. What were you guys over the last 10 years, 5-95? Looks like money doesn't buy everything.
Not spoken like a Northgate parent, spoken like a frustrated high school parent and a high school athlete. Not sure what Northgate's football record is but they seem to fair pretty well in all other sports.
What difference does it make if you have big donors like Gonzalves and Conco help out like CV had, or a lot of little people pitching in like the Northgate Community Pride Foundation? The money comes from private donations either way. I'm sure CV had to deal with EIR issues with the surrounding neighbors. When I played at CV, we had home games at DVC, but I'm thrilled CV has the nice facilities they do. Northgate needs the same thing, and why shouldn't they have it if they can raise the money? Even if they cancel sports for now, it won't be forever, and the lights are for future generations to use and enjoy. They are just doing what should have been done a long time ago.
My point was that Northgate seems to feel like they are the sugar daddies for the rest of the poor folk in the MDUSD. Right now, if it wasn't for the two donors that came through the CV AD to the tune of $125,000, there wouldn't even be a chance that we'd have Winter and Spring sports.
We need more people like Gonzalves that have the resources to step up and save the sports programs. There are many parents and neighbors in the district that have thosse type of resources, but have not stepped up. Support Conco Cement and encourage other Donors to step up to the plate.
How in blazes name does Norhtgate wanting stadium lights and bleachers make them the sugar daddies for MDUSD? CV, CP, YV, C, & Mt. D ALL have better stadiums than NG! Come on get real . If you are going to say NG thinks they are the sugar daddies or are having to suffer the other 5 high schools by all means elaborate! Otherwise zip it and make sure you / we are ALL out walking / running Oct. 18th 9:00 a.m @ Newall Park Concord to raise funds for the sports program @ the MDUSD.
DVAL football looks really good this year. The teams look ready to start league next week. The best part is next year looks even better. Each team has a couple of super stars and they are all juniors with strong & fast JV teams behind each school. (let's make sure there is a next yr)
Predictions anyone......
1. Concord
2. Y.V

alot of great players in this league this year..
Hightower and Patron wood will be players to watch for backs.
it will be interesting this year and i honestly have no idea which team will be number 1 so here is my guess..

My Predictions
What do you guys think?

1.yv 2.concord 3.clayton 4.cp 5.ng or mt.
yv has more then patrone coming back this year...10 returning starters on o and d..new quaterback played safety last year 6'4 190..the new offense loooks like it would be successful if the o line can keep up..no returngin starters..well c how good the coach works em
concord looks dangerous with buford, #88 wr, hightower and returners they might have the best offense in the league..but their defense might be the only problem
clayton-uglys! good coach...solid returners good jv team well c how good the returning league champs will perform..too many important seniors left
cp could look ugly this year a major loss to the offense with seniors..team might be hurting at the skill postion...but word it they have a good line..also their defense needs to step it up if they want playoffs this year
mount/ ng- dont know much..both could be good underdogs..mount IS going have a handful of athletes lets just see if they can play 4 quarters..northgate has good returners colin barney thier quarterback and a solid wr/hb 32
this will be another excting season

Raciti is a Jr. & yes he is about 6-3 I think. He has always been a big "kid" but now his body has matured and he's a huge "young man". Look for scouts to be all over him as a dt/de and he will create major headaches for offensive lines next year.

BTW how is CV , NG, Mt. D and CP doing?

Who will be the top Wide recievers for next year?
I know that Concord is returning Galindo and supposively they have a transfer from pitt that is pretty rediculous at the wide out position, they also have starnes coming up from jv who is very talented so they look pretty stacked at that position.
The league is pretty run heavy so I dont know much about the recievers from the other teams. Now that Yv has their new offense there might be a few new names that pop up around the league at that position. College park hardly ever throws, but they do have that big tight end that could get in the mix of things. I dont know much about the other teams. Any info?

Galindo can play for Concord, dont know anything about the transfer
CP has the TE Raciti
CV is losing Cole and Dongallo but i know they have a speedy track guy coming back
YV... who knows, this will be the first time they have WRs in decades
Mt D has #3 Turner coming back... kid might be fastest guy in the league. They have a small possession WR too #22 who isnt bad
NG has Matt Butler coming back, very good young WR, also played some RB last year

Diablo will not face any serious competition. but they will be tested.......

i dont think YV has the toughest schedule
Redwood is legit i will give you that Bethel... isnt that good Hayward... is far removed from the NCS champion team of 3 years ago.

CP in BVAL

Mt. Diablo has a kid that is a junior at 6-3 and 190 who will QB...He is fast has a strong arm..BUT this guy has issues....The Red devils also have three linemen over 300 pounds that can move plus one that is 280 that has speed...There is plenty of speed in the back field and the Red Devils could be dangerous......Mt diablo has the possibility of 50 kids turning out for 2009 season...BUT.....like in the past, they dont' show up for priactice all the time, several have a mouth that undermines the rest....And to top it off.....The alummini is dismal or almost non-exsist....All the rest of the DVAL schools have very good fund raisers and are way ahead of the game, but Mt. diablo is almost nonexsistant....There are several people who have gone way out of their way for the Red devils, such as buying the jersey's for the team and more, while the bulk do nothing.....If Mt Diablo can overcome all these problems, then it could be like old times again......

saw concord last tuesday at pittsburg
they looked pretty good.

QB. Has a commanding presence, is 6’3”, eyes are down field reading the Defense. Has a good grasp of the offense and is always pushing the pace of his team. Has a quick, strong arm and has decent running ability on the option run plays out of the gun. Got some ooos and aaaahhs from the Pitt sideline as he stiff-armed a DB to the ground on one running play. He did not throw any picks but took 2 sacks on long pass plays. In this offense I would be surprised if Lloyd is not a prospect for the next level after this season. Buford was not able to scrimmage but started all of last year at QB but I was told he played WR and CB during camp. Buford played very well at QB last year and gives Concord good depth at QB.
-RB-A. Pica, Jr. RB – Looks bigger than his older brother N. Pica from last year but has more RB skill. A. Pica has good vision and decent moves and an effective stiff arm. Sometimes he tries to do to many moves when he can lower his pads and run through tacklers using his size and strength. Runs a little upright and was visibly tired after long gains. Hightower, I was told, was at night school but was at the camp and did well through out the week. Hightower currently has 5 scholarship offers including Arizona from the Pac 10. I don’t think he needed a lot of carries during the scrimmage to prove himself to the coaches.
WR – C. Galindo. Very tough and aggressive. Uses his 6’4” frame very well. Was productive last year with the single coverage given to him. Caught 2 Go routes for big gains over the Pitt CB and a 79 yd gain on a slant route and was caught at the 1 yd line by Dargon(heck of a Safety for Pitt). A. Childs was also a stand out on the other side of the formation. Also very big 6’3” and very athletic. Caught a couple balls in traffic and had a nice touchdown getting one toe down in on a corner route. Runs with long strides and covers a lot of ground per step. Concord is going to cause big time matchup problems with these 2 WRs on the field.

I thought id post it and wait for everyone to chime in on their teams

i think...
you have to select CA-NCS-D2 and then each team pops up one at a time starting with #1 Cardinal Newman, then at the top there is a "next" button and you click it then it goes on to the next team. Each team has their 09 preview up

7-18-09 talk about a crisis...with money as tight as it is...This is going to be a real hardship on most players...Parents will decide my son or daughter can forgo sports..But I sure hope that some how the goals will be met...We can all thank Sacramento for this...

i think they will still allow low income students to not have to pay, their fee gets waived.
I know thats what they have done with the bus fees for sports. The fee was waived if your family income was below a certain level

The key will be what he can develop at the QB and WR positions.

developing a QB is going to be the hardest thing for that program. Mortenson had accuracy issues last year and I dont see Willie as that great of a QB

yvfan08.......If it gets down to no passing attack then Wood and Co. will most likely run the ball down the opposing teams gut.....Turner knows his stuff, so he has his work cut out for him...He still has a month to get things under control, maybe something will happen.....

Mt. D is holding a scrimmage on Friday night, and i have also heard Clayton Valley will be scrimmaging against Antioch on Friday as well.
Anyone know when/where Concord, YV, NG, and CP scrimmage at?

EBAL is most competitive league around !!

-CHS plays 2 teams with a 20+ rating.
-CV plays 2 teams with a Positive rating.
-Northgate plays 1 game vs Positive rating.
-Mt D plays 0 games vs Positive rating.

YV could surmise that they have a serious penalty problem from this game, but since they were relatively clean the first two games and the officiating was so bad today, I don't think the problem was with YV.

i dont want to get into debating who will built who in the DVAL, instead i want to point out the overall strength of the DVAL... This is one tough league!!!
CV 3-0 Con 3-0 MD 3-0 YV 3-0 NG 2-1 )1 loss is to Las Lomas, perennial playoff power house) CP 1-2 ( 2 losses are to 2 of the best teams in the bay area)
the DVAL is currently sitting at 15-3 overall, with the 3 being to teams who will make playoffs this year and probably win their leagues.

Will they really need Sharpe? They return Stover, Butler, and Boukis at RB and Perry and Stewart at FB. Not to mention Han and Schmidt; both averaging over 100 yards a game rushing...a lot of "horses" will be in the Bronco backfield next season.

Sophmore who will contribute next year include: Hockel, Hofer, Khamosh, Ioane, Schmidt, Han, Wise, Ryan and Egger. They are also a talented group which will mean big things in the future for Northgate.

EVERYONE needs to participate if this thing is going to work! Can't depend on a few schools to to do all the heavy lifting.

Maybe Northgate can pay ALL the fees every year for ALL the teams in the district!
This seems to be the way that it is going!

Spoken like a true NG parent. Not surprising.

Northgate's donations pale by comparison.

1. Concord
2. Y.V
3. Clayton Valley
4. Mt. Diablo
5. Toss up with NG & CP ( Schrader & Danska are sorely missed)

True-it, did you even read this post? How about asking him to elaborate?

Oh and by the way, it is Newhall park, not Newall park. In case somebody is trying to find it...
