Please tell me my tax money was not spent to purchase and install the netting fence along the RR tracks. It presumably was put up to keep people off the tracks on the 4th of July. Do they actually think that will hold people back. Even a 10 yar old could jump over that. And if the police do happen to be able to stop them after the fact, how many will face charges? Point made!

You know that little red light in your car with the picture of the thermometer on it? The one that when it comes on, it means if you keep going something really bad could happen? They call that an "idiot light" for people who may have misinterpreted what the smoke, steam, and loud whistling noises mean.
That "idiot fence" around the train tracks works on the same kind of principle.

Antioch is full of them if lately is any indication. Besides they usually end up blowing their engines up.(or themselves)

i think they do it because a small child should it stray from a parent could be in the path of a train, and i think they started that after that 4th of july when the guy got killed by the train he was drug from the lumber bldg the the foot of H st.

Probably a prudent move, especially in light of the 2 pedestrians hit on Amtrack yesterday in separate incidents. It used to be that everything stopped when a train approached, but nowadays it seems many don't even notice.

Even if tax money was involved it no doubt cost less than fighting a lawsuit if someone was injured/killed. Not to say that is more important than protecting the citizens of Antioch.

What they need are pedestrian stairways over the tracks like they have over some freeways. Especially downtown where people want to get close to the water. But install an elevator for people like me. LOL

But it's ok to use tax money to build a special elevator for Smokey. I get it.

If nobody got hit by a train, then the fence was worth it. How could you live with yourself if you didn't built a fence and a train hit somebody?

Did anyone notice if the fence worked? I wasn't down that far when the fireworks started.

C'mon Smokey, if the fence hadn't worked, don't you think we would have heard about it by now? Somebody jay walks and it's posted within minutes on this forum for Pete's sake.
Are we reelin' in the years, fencin' in all the trains,
Have we had it up to here, wasting away good brains?

Where I was I saw the fence being trampled down and people crossing the tracks. This was right behind Mutiny. The police came in and cleared out these these people and the minute they left they crossed the tracks again to watch the fire works. I think the fence did keep people from walking from one end of downtown to the othere on the tracks like previous years but it only took 1 stupid person to smash the fence and others followed. A very dangerous place to watch the fireworks especially if you had small children and dogs.

I saw a train go by and it was flying! I hear them more than I see them, and didn't realize just how fast they go, unless that guy just happened to be speeding like he was driving down James Donlan or something. I can see how a train can be right on top of you before you know it if they go through there that fast. I'm gonna start looking now before I drive over the tracks.

Actually, there was only one train that passed between 7-10pm and that was an AMTRAK passenger train which stopped at the Antioch station. As it passed the foot of G Street, it had really slowed down and we were able to easily see the few people whowere in the train.

Arne, you have to realize that BJ hadn't eaten for the last two hours and was probably hallucinating by then. He literally thought he saw the train flying.

Or perhaps BJ had just watched "Back to the Future III" with his kids

you absolutly should look every time, depending on the wind factor that train can creep up on you and you would only have seconds to respond ive lived by the tracks for years and have seen up close and personal what a train can do to a human, even if someone were curious and then seen something like that you would wish you never did i dont care how tough your stomach is.

As delirious as BJ was from lack of food, there's a very good chance that that's what he thought the train looked like.

Look, I know what I saw! I could appreciate the incredible speed of the train as it disappeared past the back wall of the Casino Building. 4Antioch said there was one train between 7-10 PM, but I was there by 5:00 so maybe it went by then? I'd like to see the train manifest. I was also down there at 11:00 in the morning scoping out a spot (you know I was, because I posted about the porta-potty locations), and I can't say for sure whether I saw the train "fly" by in the morning around 11:00 or the late afternoon around 5:00 PM. I know it was still very sunny out and well before I starting feeling the effects of starvation induced hallucination delirium.
