“Double” Play

0r forced out

It has came to my attention that a “forced” out at second bass whenever a batter has a hit and proceeds to first base, is illegal until the batter in question reaches the, (first),  base, the player on first dose not have to be “safe” on second base.

For example, if the batter has a heart attack, (hypothetical), and dies before reaching first base, there would be no “force”. for the player that is currently on first to vacate the base.  In other words, until the current batter steps on first place, there would not be any reason to advance to second except to advance to score via second base.

The only legal way that the player who is/ was on first to be “put” out before said player reaches first, would be to be “tagged” out!

I never thought of it that way. If that were the case, there would be no force outs at any base, and there would be a lot more pickles where they attempt to tag out the players rather than just the bases.

So I take it you are not a big fan of the phantom double play then?
