I see Berlin has already supplied you with the link. :-)
Peddie won the game against Deer Valley and St. Mary's won the game against Brea. It seems that St. Mary's stole the ball quite often from Brea. (I wasn't keeping tabs on statistics.) If Brea had been able to prevent those, I feel the game very easily could have gone the other way.
A couple of Deer Valley's players were injured and ended up on the bench. Saindon is full of energy, quick and handles the ball well. Berlin, if you were there, was it Mixon that spent some time on the bench after the Peddie player came down on top of her legs? There was one player for Deer Valley that seemed quite young (Mixon?) and well on her way to playing some fantastic basket ball.
I hope the West Coast Jamboree will be back again next year.
sorry, i did not see any of the deer valley games. sat only at freedom 3 days.will see deer valley/ carondelet jan 2, at carondelet, first game of the season.
berlin47112
Hey Berlin, we posted our messages at almost the same time.
I might try to go to that game too so I'll look for you. Yell something out in German so I know it's you. How about, "Hey Ref, it's only the 2nd day, and you're gonna run away with the Worst Ref of the Year Award." Of course, I won't know what you're saying, but I'll recognize it as being German. All I ask is that you don't turn your video camera on me if the Ref makes a bad call and I have a psycho parent type meltdown. Remember, no food allowed in the Carondelet gym, so plan to have a Curry Wurst tailgate party beforehand in the parking lot.
Wow, Deer Valley two losses. You're not kidding about there being some tough competition in this tourney. That Peddie team came all the way from New Jersey?
I see Deer Valley plays at Carondelet tomorrow, Jan 2nd, at 7:00 PM. That ought to be a great game and will set the stage for who might be the team to beat in the BVAL. Hopefully the players you saw get injured will be available for that one.
Yes, the Peddie team did come all the way from New Jersey. I didn't realize that until I heard it from a Peddie player that was sitting near us in the bleachers following their game with Deer Valley.
I did notice that Deer Valley and Carondelet are playing tomorrow. I'd like to catch that game.
I was there. I stood by the door during the wild final minute of the JV game. Carondelet JV's won after Deer Valley made an ill advised foul and 2 free throws were converted breaking a tie game. Was that overtime? The varsity game started late.
The varsity was sloppy. The Cougars started in a zone that I thought was pretty successful but then I think they switched to man defense and DV was able to get some buckets underneath on put-backs and air balls that looked like great passes. Carondelet couldn't make a shot down the stretch but Ellis really added an exclamation point when she rejected that one shot away hard into the gym mats. She would be great on the offensive end too if she wouldn't rush her shots, but I'm sure she's trying to get it off before she gets surrounded by defenders. There was a couple controversial calls, but they seemed to even out for both sides. DV fans were yelling about that 3 pointer being out of bounds when it bounced around on top of the backboard, but there didn't seem to be a support there so I guess the top would be the same as the sides or bottom. There is no shot clock to hit as they have them way up in the corners. How do the players see them? DV was great converted their free throws down the stretch.
I looked for Berlin too but there were too many people there to guess who he was. I walked out with about 47 seconds left after Carondelet called a time out with Ellis at the line, but so did some other folks. I think I'll go to the Carondelet at Antioch game Friday night.
Hey 001, I'm glad Berlin didn't yell at the refs in German. I think the blonde one is Tom Gilbert and I used to know him really well but it's been a while. If that's him, he's been reffing forever. He even got some of us in high school to ref 6th grade girls basketball games for a few extra bucks. I know he does city league games too. The fans were sure on him a couple times. If they only knew how long he's been doing it, they might cut him some slack.
Is that Gilbert do you know?
He was born to ref, that's for sure. When he retires they better retire his uniform too. Isn't he in charge of all the referees? Probably. I'll be sure to say hi next time. I just can't get myself to heckle a guy that has put in that much service. I sat right behind a very vocal Deer Valley fan who was wearing her pretty multi-DV colored sweater. She did a great job yelling at Gilbert all game so I didn't have to. I doubt anything fazes Gilbert. Those are tough calls to make when Saindon drives through the lane and bodies go flying everywhere. How does Gilbert do it?
how exciting those two games were. there is more action then in an nba game. unfortunately for carondelet varsity they lost as expected. we have no offense, nobody can or will shoot. i also thought the deer valley girls showed more effort, all of them. our team peaks by half time, and then they just let go, at least yesterday, they pushed until the last quarter.
next game day fri. at antioch high.
fresh at 4:00 pmj/v at 5:30 pmvarsity at 7:00 pm
i will be there, when you walk in on the left, top row. if they have both bleachers open.
by the way, i was the only good looking carondelet video guy between all the deer valley fans.@ bazooka...did you wear a kind of yellow t-shirt?
berlin47112
No, I saw a guy in a light yellow T-shirt too and thought that was you. I wore a CAL jacket that I took off at half time because it was hotter than heck in there and I had a long sleeve black velour... hey, what does it matter now what I was wearing,? You're not going to remember all the people unless you go there specifically to videotape the fans looking for bad behavior?
I'll be at AHS Friday. Not sure what side I'll sit on because I'm going with my father in law and he has a niece who is a cheerleader for AHS but he works at Carondelet. Probably Antioch side.
I tried to wear my AHS hat last night because I figured I would be the only one wearing one and you would spot it, but when I went to put it on it was really tight. My head couldn't have grown during the holidays, could it? I'll try to wear it again Friday night. Mine is black with a yellow visor and has a leaping leper on it. Maybe I'll wear a distinguishable shirt like my green hawaiian you will surely notice, but if CAL beats USC tonight, I might go with the CAL jacket again.
That's kind of cruel to have a leaping leper as your mascot.
Are you sure your head size hasn't increased because of that BALCO moisturizing cream you've been using?
CAL beat USC. It was a great game. I think this is one of the most enjoyable CAL teams to watch in a long time. They get even scoring from everyone.
Boy, that O.J. Mayo for USC is terrific for a freshman. Had over 30 points! He's the real deal.
We'll see how CAL fares against UCLA on Saturday afternoon (3:00). That game should be televised, so catch it if you can.
I saw that in the paper today. I actually forgot Batlin wasn't already at St. Marys and had another year. I can't go tomorrow because I'll be at the CAL/UCLA game that starts at 3:00. I'd got to De La Salle to see the AHS boys, but I already promised Berlin and my Father-in-Law (not the same person, thank goodness!) that I would go to the girl's game.
great day at antioch high......
carondelet fresh beat antioch 45-9j/v carondelet beat antioch 39-32varsity carondelet beat antioch 62-27
great effort on both sides, great rev's. super afternoon and evening.bleachers loaded with family and players.
unfortunately the gym had only 1 bleacher down, so i had to mingle with the enemy.
did buy some coffee there, and was surprised how inexpensive it was. talked briefly to the mom in charge, suggesting that the prices are to low, but did not make a friend..<G>
did not see/ meet bazooka, even tried a bavarian yodel calling call, but he did not come forward.....
edit:
still have to ask..where were all the other antioch residents? if they do not show up for a great event like that, what will make them go to a community center?
Edited 1/4/2008 10:15 pm by berlin47112
I was there Berlin. I wore the CAL jacket but the panther hat is still too tight. I wore a Digital-Green Cable Guy hat instead that I picked up when the cable installer left his hat behind after installing my DSL.
The Lady Panthers played hard, but they were just overmatched. I really liked watching their little point guard #10. She is quick, scrappy, and can really handle the ball.
Carondelet was hitting the 3 point bombs tonight unlike 2 nights ago against DV. Of course, DV's defense is pretty smothering. The cougars had a big size and rebounding advantage against Antioch that they didn't enjoy against DV.
Berlin, are you the main guy doing the video in the red shirt and shorts sitting right at the top middle? I was expecting some amateur video hack running around with a handheld camcorder. Were you the official looking guy behind the tri-pod? I didn't hear you yodel. I think you were joking to 001 about that.
If that's you I'll be sure to say "hi" next time. I didn't want to interrupt that guy in case it wasn't you and he was trying to tape the game for the coach's clinic. Besides, what I'm I going to walk up and say, "Sprechen sie deutsch?
well, there is always a next time. yap..thats me, in shorts, and in the top middle. my wife does not like my shorts, she claims that my legs attract to many girls....
Edited 1/5/2008 9:22 am by berlin47112
LOL! I was freezing when we left the gym so I can't imagine wearing shorts in weather like this. I guess you are are used to that alpine climate. I'm sure I'll see you at another game, so now I know who to walk up and say hello to.
Looks like MV and AV will battle it out for both boys and girls league titles.
I saw Miramonte lost to Berkeley. They shut down Batlin and Burns. Looks like Berkeley will be tough again in the playoffs.
well, game 3 day is over and, all three carondelet teams got them self a big win. home games against freedom.
the fresh woman 57 -13j/v team 59-19varsity 59-12

Hey 001,
I'm going to the Mt. Diablo (Boys) vs. Concord Friday night at 5:30. Concord is 11-2 overall and barely lost to Dublin last game. MD has Damahn Miller back, pretty good post player with great size. They lost to Miramonte last game by about 13 or so. I think it could be a pretty good game being it's in the Red Devil's gym.
earlier today i saw dls - ygancia valley freshman at dls.dls won high, i don't have the final score.....but dls was more then 30 points ahead.they have some very good boys playing.

just got back from an other super game day.
freshman carondelet-herritage 73-36j/v carondelet-herritage 63-40varsity carondelet-herritage 69-31
all three games excellent games, all girls gave their very best.
have to get ready for 2 carondelet freshman soccer games on saturday
berlin47112
Berlin, I think a super game day for you is when all three Carondelet teams smoke their opponents. Don't you enjoy close games when the outcome is in doubt? LOL
Concord beat Diablo 50-40. The first half was pretty close, but Diablo had a bad 3rd quarter and got behind by 13 or so. Then they started getting some turnovers off the press and cut it to 4 with a couple minutes left, but had to start fouling and MD made all the free throws. Concord has 3 big players where MD has Miller and every other guy the exact same height. The other team can just collapse on Miller so he has a rough go at it. Concord was the better team, but Diablo uses their quickness and does a pretty good job competing.
i can tell you that all teams/ girls where playing very hard. nba is nothing in comparison.even i am a parent, i do not have a girl playing, i am working!my girl is in the soccer team.
berlin47112
Didn't see too many surprises there.
Miller got a few inside, but the big guys for Concord are tough and he drew a double or triple team as soon as he got the ball. They hit a few outside, but for some reason they started chucking from outside the whole 3rd quarter instead of being patient. I think they got a little behind and started to panic. Coach Battle did a good job getting them back in the game by going back to their pressure defense and creating fast breaks off the turnovers. They have some good players, but are small except for Miller. Thin guys too, where Concord has some bruisers.
Hey, Gilbert wasn't there, but Fogie was reffing.
I sure did. Even though he's older, he still doesn't take any crap. He was my baseball coach. He was a strong guy. We were skinny little kids in high school. He must have had weights in his garage and lifted all the time. There really weren't weight rooms at school, just a maintenance/janitor shack with a bench and some rusty old free weights. No steroids back then and not nearly as many health clubs. I only joined that one at Sunvalley after my knee surgery and I was rehabbing. Remember how the few health clubs around all had big community jacuzzi spas? Coed ones too, although like the bars, seemed like girls hardly went in them. Then Magic Johnson got AIDS and nobody understood it, so they quickly ripped the hot tubs out and replaced them with day care centers.
In Fogie's eyes you were either great or lousy, there was no room for mediocrity. Once I made a great diving stop in the hole and threw a guy out from my knees and went I got to the dugout Fogie was all full of praise and I felt great. In the bottom of the same inning I came up with one out and a guy on 3rd and I swung at a ball four and popped out. This time when I got to the dugout he chewed me out and yanked me out of the game. I played scared. I think it even affected me when I played city basketball games as an adult and Fogie was the ref.
I like Fogie. He taught us good lessons about life. Like with their spouses, guys would'nt be so surprised at how quickly they can go from being a hero to the doghouse if they all had a chance to play for Fogie. I just take it with stride. LOL
You and 001 are too much. I let it go by the first time when you mentioned Tom Gilbert's legendary status and now you're talking about Larry Fogelstrom too. Definitely old school. Now you're close to fanatically knowledgeable. They're both good guys though and it's always nice talking to them.

That is what's great about sports Mr. T, seeing all the old timers and reminicing about the past. I don't have that coach's personality like my dad, but I was one of the kids that learned a lot about discipline and respect from those kind of guys.
I told you my dad helped coach Battle out at practices in years past? When we were walking out of the MD gym last night, my dad stopped to talk to a tall athletic looking kid that was standing by the exit. I guess he graduated last year. My dad was asking him if he was playing ball as I guess he played both football and basketball in high school. He said he wasn't, but was planning on attending Junior College, so my Dad told him that was good, and to stay in school. As we left, my dad said, "I have a lot of respect for that kid." He said one day at practice he got in a bad argument with coach Battle and got kicked out of practice. After practice, my dad was first to leave and noticed him sulking and sitting outside the gym apparently having nowhere to go until his ride came. My dad walked up to him and told him, "You know, you should be a man and walk inside and apologize to Coach." The next day he was reinstated because he did just that. Hopefully that young man can draw from that experience and become a better person because of it. A little humility can go a long way.
My parents were divorced and my dad wasn't around much back then, so I learned a lot from coaches who were pseudo father figures. With so many kids today growing up in broken families, we can't afford to let sports go toward the wayside. It's sad when you see programs cancelled like Richmond football or the Pittsburg youth leagues. Especially when the parent's bad behavior is the cause. That's when the kids could use a good coach in their life. I heard Mt. Diablo doesn't have a freshman B-ball team because they needed the freshman to fill out a JV team? How can a high school with such a storied sports history fail to get enough participation?

There's another legendary referree. His last name was Martin if I remember correctly. I think his first name was Dave, but I might be mixing that up with Dave Martin, from the legendary local bar band, "Dave Martin's Houseparty." They are different guys. The one who was a ref, was my intermediate school P.E. teacher so we just called him Mr. Martin. He reffed a lot of high school games in the 70's. Although I never actually saw him take it out, my friends all told me he had a glass eye. I'm not sure it that was just a rumor, but I know I couldn't tell even after all the times I stared at it trying to see if it was real. He sure didn't have any trouble seeing my fouls. I think I remember him doing softball games too. If he did have a glass eye, he was the best one-eyed refs I knew. He didn't have the longevity of some of these guys, but maybe you knew him too and could dispell or confirm the glass eye story?
That's great, I knew somebody would know Dave Martin too. In P.E. once we were all picking on one of the other kids, and Martin lined us all up. We were expecting to have to do jumping jacks, but instead he pulled out a big wooden paddle with holes in it and called out a couple guys and smacked them on the butt in front of the class. Nobody ever bullied anybody again. You can't do that nowadays, but it sure was effective. I wonder what would have happened if he caught us talking about his glass eye? LOL
I'd like to see that game. I heard the Broncos picked up a transfer from the tri-valley area who is supposed to be pretty good.
001, did you hear about that father of a girl on the Sacret Heart Cathedral team who was shot while standing outside the gym at halftime? Apparently he was an anti-violence advocate in the Hunter's Point area, but they hadn't determined yet if that was related to his killing. How terrible.
I went to the NG/Miramonte game. Broncos led at halftime. Would have been by 6 but, a Matador hit a 30 footer at the half buzzer. It was mostly Blodgetts shooting that gave NG their lead. She was hitting a lot of 3's. One of the smallest girls out there too. Hessel was guarding Batlin and doing a good job on here, but Batlin was still playing her game. Sometimes she makes really athletic plays like a great pass, but the recipient isn't athletic enough to handle it. The NG coach pulled Hessel when Batlin went out in the 2nd quarter. He immediately went to full court pressure and NG got some quick turnovers and capitalized, so the Mats coach put Batlin back in and Hessell checked back in too. Hessel has a funny looking outside shot, but she can hit them. She's a good ballplayer. Petersen, the tall center for NG is pretty good too.
After half the Mats went on a 10 point run, and then NG countered with their own to pull back to within 4, but after that is was all Miramonte. They shut down Blodgett and then staarted getting all the rebounds and a bunch of steals. They were fast breaking and getting layups with a lot of AND1's off fouls. They started hitting their open 3's too. Northgate struggled from the middle of the 3rd period to the end. It was about 62 to 45 or so when I left with less than 2 minutes.
I really don't think either of those top 2 DFAL teams could beat Deer Valley or Carondelet. I could be wrong, but I don't think they have anyone to match up with Saindon, Allard, or Ellis. I think DV and Carondelet are so good defensively, they would shut down NG and Miramonte. I guess we will never know though, right, because they won't play each other?
Batlin will even be a better player when she gets to the next level and has better players around her. What a great deal to go to St. Mary's College right down the street from where you went to high school. All that because you play basketball and throw a few shotputs!
Yeah, that sounds like the same game I saw. I guess we were posting at the same time.
Is that tall Middleton girl, Valerie I think her name is, missed by NG? She had her arm in a sling.
I was sitting directly under the sign that read, VISITOR'S PARENTS in the back row to the right when you walked in. Was that you playing with your palm pilot? Were you checking the Times discussion boards during breaks?
I didn't know that was Burns that hit that shot before half. I wish I would have known what number she was and I would have watched her more.
I asked one of the moms next to me right before it started which was Hessell, and she pointed her out to me. Some of the others I just remember from last year. They miss Dahlgard.
I could see the lists up there, but couldn't read them because of the bad angle. They had some posters on the wall by the stage, but the one that had the 3 Killer B's listed (Batlin, Burns, and somebody else) was right behind the basket so I couldn't read the names and numbers. That announcer does a great job but it's still hard to make out the names if you aren't familiar with them.
I think Carondelet plays at YV tomorrow? I don't know if I'll make that one, but I bet Berlin will be there.
That one ref did a great job when the ball was tied up in the 2nd quarter and the home court scorer's table had the possession arrow pointing the wrong way. I was ready to yell out "Red Ball" but he immediately had a discussion with the other Ref and overruled the arrow. I thought that was great that he remembered the Mats got possession to start the quarter. The announcer sang the National Anthem quite well though.
Be sure to give me a heads up when Carondelet plays at DV. I want to see that one for sure. That would be a good curry wurst game or at least a Gas City hot dog.
Thanks Berlin for that correction. Carondelet is at CV tonight, not YV.
001, can CVHS give Carondelet a game, or will Berlin get his jollies again watching a another Cougar shelacking?
Put this one on your calendar. We don't have to meet at gas city if someone can think of a better place to hang out before or after the game.

Have you seen Brian Stafford play for Las Lomas yet? I haven't myself. My Dad says he quite a player and puts up a lot of points.
His grandfather played for my dad at Diablo when they won the championship, and was part of those teams at CAL during the Pete Newell glory years. I saw him listed in the media guide under "letterman" as Dave Stafford, (6-3, Concord 1960, 61). He must have played on the CAL teams that beat an Oscar Robertson led Cincinatti team in the semi-finals in both 1959 and 1960:
1959: CAL NCAA Champions, beat West Virginia led by Jerry West (28 pts)
1960: CAL runners-up, lost to Ohio State in finals
I'll have to attend a Las Lomas game to see Stafford. I think he's only a junior. Diablo beat Kyle Campanelli's team last night. College Park had no answer for Diablo's full court pressure! I think that's what Diablo has to do, as Miller is the only tall guy and he can't be asked to rebound and score alone. They have to use their quickness and convert off turnovers.
Brian is a decent enough player. Which should rate as an understatement because he did pick up a D1 scholarship to the Univ of Denver. He can score a boatload at times but he can be shut down too. Las Lomas will go as far as he can carry them this year which may be as far as the NCS playoffs but expect the DFAL to be topsy turvy. Nothing will play out as expected. That includes games with College Park, Mount Diablo and Alhambra. It's just that type of year.
