Handicaped accesible housing in Antioch?

Been looking for awhile for places equiped to handle the disabled,I have found that only 5 units of a 200 unit building are accessible and have waiting lists.How many rental units does Antioch have for those who must have certain floor plans and wider doorways,lower sinks and ways to get inside,like downstairs..lol..Seems like everyplace has a special parking place with the picture of the person in the wheelchair right in front at every mall in america and has anybody ever see anybody who parks there using a wheelchair or even showing a need to use the spot,they should put more spots a [bleep]her away but wider for a don't hit the car parked next to me due to lack of space needed to allow chair.Wow I got away from my question and only been in a chair for 2 years so I'm just a rookie who is now is a seeing how not many if any places exist for those with special needs and Section 8 is not accepting and my list for elderly/disabled is not even close to my april 07 application but lack of accesible units will make it very hard to continue being a resident here in Antioch and even California.By the way I Had Sec 8 for 12 years till I moved to florida for 2 years and I gave up my housing,but I returned back to live here and found out I should have never left to start with because nothing is here to help me live a productive life and rent prices are more than monthly income,how do those living on welfare and kids do it  every month.

sorry, i can't help you, but your case is an other reason why people who rent out their houses need to have a biz license, and the houses brought up to ada standards. (if they don't..no license)

they have all the benefits, but no responsibility.

What are the ADA standards for single family rentals you are talking about?  Do you want to make people who rent out their single family homes widen every doorway, lower their bathroom counters, have ramps for the raised entryways, 5' turn radius in the bathrooms, etc.  How they going to pay for the retrofitting when they are probably upside down in the house as it is and can't sell?  More owners would just walk away from their houses and no investors would think of buying them so the market would just further tank.

exactly..

people have a business, renting out houses for profit. its very simple...business license and complying with all the ada laws like any other business has to.

Ok, but be prepared for them to take their business elsewhere where they don't charge for the fees.  Maybe that's fine, I don't know what it would do.  I don't think it's a good time to hit people with more fees.

if they would take their biz "elsewhere" ...? sell the house?

i just think..any biz owner, like you, has to have their biz to ada standards, why not people who rent out houses?....it would lower the rentals in antioch, bring needed money to the city, it definitely would help to decrease sec 8 in antioch.

a big side effect would be housing for handicapped.

I just know there are many people, regular joes, who put deposits down on brand new homes being built at the worst possible time thinking they could sell their former homes, but were not able to.  They moved into their new homes and saw their values plummet, and were forced to rent out their former homes because they couldn't sell.  They got stuck with two homes that are upside down and they can't live in both so they have to rent one out and hope the tenants they get, pay their rent on time. 

I think people want to stick it to the landlords because of the messed up section 8 program, and that isn't really fair.  You're not going to stop section 8, by going after the landlords, and you will probably just end up getting sued by landlords who feel it's their right to rent to whomever they want.

Nobody seems to have a problem giving section 8 money to disabled people, so why not take some of that money they are giving out to non-disabled people, and use it to subsidize more ADA compliant homes for people who are disabled?  That makes more sense to me than making landlords who are trying to work and make a living like everybody else, pick up the slack for what the government should be doing.

Maybe I'm way off here?  I don't know.

BTW, I don't have a problem with having to build ADA compliant for commercial buildings or in large residential multi-unit complexes.  It's good for business!  We have a residential facility for the diabled two doors down from us and they come in quite often.

"even showing a need to use the spot" ****         Before I get to your housing situation, I would like to speak on behalf of those of us who are seriously ill, have to be driven places, and on days when we ARE almost well enough to go out, those closer spots are a gift from God.  Just because my disability does not require  a wheelchair, I would not want you or anyone else to deal with my life.  And, next, just because I became totally disabled a bit younger than I might prefer,  I can assure you that I would love nothing more than the gift of improvement with the condition I will have for life.  Were it not for my wonderful team of Physicians, and a wonderful and dedicated group of friends and family, I would be at the mercy of social services, where right now, (and not unless I feel I need to be closer) I just cannot walk well even from those spaces without  my helpers.

I am sorry that you are in this mess, but I know nothing about housing for the  disabled vs. transitional or term residence help for the "Section 8" people, who sometimes have been known to abuse the length of time they stay and the number of people who use their units.

I guess you could call the City and find out of there are other options open to you because I truly understand your frustration.  We moved a few years ago and would only look at single level homes.  One guy had done some work on his home and made a walk up bedroom with 13 steps.  When I told hubby, he told the guy we did not need to see more as we had clearly stated we needed a SINGLE story home.  He actually told us, "Well, it's not REALLY THAT MANY stairs and the house is TECHNICALLY a single story.  Wonder if we had any building permits or inspections???  SO I will keep you in my prayers and hope something will turn up. I think that Sr Disabled folks should have priority for housing, and I would have thought that the ADA regs would require some single level units...
