but the owner gets the credit when thing go right and the blame when things go very very wrong. The Raiders' slide from SB contender to complete bust 4 years running, or is it five, I'm losing track, lies at the feet of the owner who has set himself up as GM and true head coach. Al Davis had no peer in his prime. But we all grow long in the tooth and sooner or later we have to face the fact that our decision making is not what it used to be. A nimble mind is a must in this game and all we really know of Al's is what our record has been as of late. Ain't real good. The emperor has no clothes.
I wish someone would word a fantasy question about the make-up of new ownership, which is as inevitable as a dirty nuke attack by radical rug riders.
While I think Davis deserves a lot of blame for the recent debacle, I don't know that I would want another man in there. It would be nice to have an actual GM and even someone that can take over once Al is gone. Weather or not people want to say it the guy is a legend. Good morning SacBomber: Good article!! Seldom does one find a "positive" article especially about Mr. Davis. 2nd: Happy Belated Birthday Mr. Davis!!
Have I always agreed with the "changes" that have occured in the last 45 years that I've been a Raider fan of course not! But look around the league, what team has not had it's problems? Year after year, Mr. Davis has always tried to get more talent, however the "talent" hasn't always produced, for many reasons!!
The latest example. Randy Moss. He certainly proved that he could still play last year with the Pats. He just didn't want to be in Oakland. Is it Mr. Davis' fault that Norval and Shell couldn't bring the best of Moss out? Well yes if you consider it was Mr. Davis who hired Norval and Shell! But I'm not sure that with Randy it would not have made a difference who the Coach or Owner was, he didn't want to play in Oakland period.
I remember the "knock" on the Raiders in the 2000-2003 time frame, is that they were "old". Well they were and many players are gone from their last SB team of just 5 years ago!
When Mr. Davis went on his "spending spree" this past off season, you think he knew the owners were going to "opt out of the CBA"?? Sure he did!! What else has happened, even the Commisioner has come out and said rookie salaries are out of control! Look for a salary structure for rookies like the NBA has in the next CBA!! The money not only should go to the vets who have proved that they can play in the NFL, it needs to go to them! Think Mr. Davis knows that, I sure do!!
The "fall from the top" is never easy! The climb back up can be long! No team stays on top forever! Just look at the league, Green Bay won the first two SB's! but it was a long wait until Farve came along and won the 3rd one, and even Farve was 1-1 in the SB!. The Bills, 4 straight trips to the SB, and never won one, in the early 90s! Where are they now? The Steelers, 4-0 with Bradshaw in the 70s! 1-1 since then! The "Boys" well Jerry had them going in the early to mid 90s, and they are on the way up again, will they reach the SB before they fall again, maybe. What has Denver really done since Elway retired, 2 play-off appearances, one play-off victory. Miami, I'm not sure even the "Big Tuna" can help them! Currently you have the Pats and Colts in the AFC. The Colts will be good as long as Payton can play. The Pats well it will be an intersting year, (2008), will they recover from the SB loss? Who knows.
The point, Mr. Davis is active and always trying to improve, the Raiders. He hasn't always been successful, but know owner has been! If you really want to see a "dysfunctional team" from ownership, front office, and Coach, just look across the bay! LOL
It is very rare that you find articles like this about Davis. I'm tired of people talking about how stupid Al Davis is. You have a very good point with Moss. Davis usually always gets us at least one big name in FA. Al likes the proven vets thats why we had Rod Woodson come in, Warren Sapp, Ted Washington, Sam Adams, Ray Buchanon... even LaMont Jordan was a RB everyone was going after when we brought him in. Al brings in guys so that every off season we can be excited for the up coming season. Look at how many teams don't make any moves during the off season. You think their fans are ecstatic about the up coming season with the same exact team they had the following year. Wasn't AZs big move resigning Fitz? Detroit's big move bringing in Dwight Smith? C'mon there are far worse than what we have. Bengals big move was getting Johnson into camp I mean [bleep]? How on earth can we have the worst owner in football. I can understand the Fans that dislike him, because I myself dislike him at times, but I also know that Al Davis is the Raiders.
I'm just glad that there are others on this site that still have respect for Al Davis. I can't believe when I hear people talking about him like he's a nobody. One of the most influential people in the history of football and probably even sports and he is the owner of our favorite team.... I don't know how you can't not like that. The funny thing about it too is Davis never stops turning the wheels so even when were winning he is still making adjustments weather its to the team or to the league, someone always has beef with him.
he-heh, you said "weather or not" instead of "whether or not"....lol...
people know the guy is a legend maun but that ain't the point, like you said, he deserves a lot of the blame....a lot of this is his own philosophies and his own doing...
but you can be ripped to shreds at being a legend.
i mean seriously let's be honest...jesus christ himself gets ripped til this very day and he is god's son for crying out loud....and if you don't wanna go that route (although it's true) then rev. dr. martin luther king gets ripped too and he stood for good....and if you don't wanna go that route, then take this into account, the president is the ieal citizen and lord knows everyone rips him, lol.....hahahahaha, thats a killer...
so it doesn't matter who you are, you will be ripped.
did you know that al davis admired hitler?..if you haven't you should check out that sportscentury interview...it's no wonder why some hate davis, hahahahahahaha...wow, another killer...lol..peace and i feel much better today.
Ha Ha thanks for pointing that out jerk!! Ha Ha I have a problem with that, the fingers just like to spell it that way. Its like "there" and "their" I know what I should use my fingers just find it easier to spell it. LOL.
I know what your saying. Dr. Martin Luther King is a better example than either of the two. I know what your saying about Jesus Christ however there are many people who think that its a crock. And the President is, well you know. Ha Ha.
Ha Ha its a touchy subject for many talking about Hitler because of the abuse and killing he did. Davis admired him for his leadership skills. Hitler was a piece of Shiot but he was a hell of a leader. I don't agree with his way of going about what he did, but to admire his leadership skills is not a bad thing in my eyes as long as he isn't going out and killing people to get his way. And yes I understand why many hate Davis. I probably would too if I wasn't a Raider fan
hey what up maun?...lol...it's been a while since i have been called a jerk and it feels good, lol...
hitler, i tell what he was a brainwasher, kinda like davis...too many people see no wrong in what davis does, and they are ready to killl people if they say anythign about the guy...
i am not one of thse guys, i am notrious for ripping him...i don't care what he has done, i don't care if it's his team, i praise him when he does well, and i rip him when he does what i thin is wrong...he is the main reason of why we have sucked the last 5 years...he is in the spotlight every year "in the offseason" and it should not be like that...le'ts be honest, most of his decisions backfire on his [bleep]...we are tied for 3rd all time in the nfl with 10 games or more losses in a season streak...they said this on nlf live yesterday...
people get so pissed saying that all they say is negatvie stuff about us on tv but i remember me and your bro standing side by side fighting against others and we were like, "what else are they gonna say, we lose all the time"...no one is gonna baby us just because we won at one point maun, ya know?..oakland deserves to be ripped..too many stupid decisions had been made and it puts us under...too many players who was here said it seems not to be about football here in the front office, it's about control...sapp said the same thing and i know he ain't lying...
your very last sentence about davis sums it up and we don't even have to talk about it anymore, lol...i came back in here to edi, i just read my post and i msspelled like 7 words lol...hahahaha..peace
Ha Ha how is that? I can call you a jerk everyday if you want LOL I could make it your nickname.
I'm not saying that its wrong to rip Davis. All I'm trying to say is that people are quick to jump on him when times are bad. Yes, he has to take a lot of blame for whats going on because he is the one who makes the decisions. I'm just tired of people who don't follow the Raiders enough to know what the guy has done for the organization and the league. The is a what have you done for me lately business and I know that. I know that Al Davis is trying to get us back to respectability and its taking longer than you or I or even him thought. When we brought in Collins I didn't think that he would be as bad as he was. Same with Aaron Brooks, same with Randy Moss... We just haven't had any luck on the offensive side of the ball bringing in FAs.
You want to know why this losing season streak is such a big deal? Because most everyone wouldn't expect it to happen to Al. Why? Because he has been a part of the Raiders for how long? and how many losing seasons in a row was the team record prior to this? This is why its such a big deal. The Lions, Bills and Cards have the longest streaks for not making the playoffs and it gets talked about, but not as much as the Raiders and do you think our legacy has anything to do with it? I'm sure its a HUGE part of it. People don't hate the any team like they hate the Raiders. Some of the biggest rivalries in the game came against the Raiders. 49ers have been mediocre borderline sucking just like us for the past while and do they get talked about as much? C'mon man you being in the media should know how this works. It means more to us as fans to win games, but this just give people something to talk about.
Like I said, I don't care if you rip the guy. I disagree with lots of things he does, but if your going to rip him know what your saying first. Some on here rip the guy like he has never done anything and that he doesn't know any thing all I'm saying is when you rip him know what your talking about. He can't keep a coach to save his life, but he has brought in players to try to make this team better that just don't pan out.
Thanks for posting the article. The very last sentence sums up my feelings perfectly.Anyone who posts negativly about Al Davis is extremly IGNORANT, and doesn't begin to understand the NFL.
It is a day we celebrate our independence. With that achievement we cast off the chains of group think. We've fought to defeat Brits, Nazis, Commies, etc, all of whom had a common thread, no one is allowed to vary from the official thought handed down from on high. My political hero was Ronald Reagan. But even he got old, and toward the end I , as one of his most ardent admirers, would not have conceived of allowing him to have a third term. Age, my friend, is the great robber of ability. With that, I give Al Davis all respect that is due him as a stalwart of the AFL and the NFL. But there comes a time when one must step aside to allow following generations to assume the torch. I applaud your passion. But it is not ignorance to question Al's current acumen.
By the way, I doubt that The Future will shuffle off to Buffalo. He has been and remains one of the most fervent fans on this site.
Its actually funny that were talking about this now cause I was watching the Raiders Report last night and it was on the legacy of Al Davis. If you haven't seen it its a good watch. They should have it on Raiders.com. It actually has players that never played for the Raiders talking about how they wanted to play for them and how much respect players in the NFL have for him.
What a weak-minded kool-aid drinker you are. Al is untouchable and deserves no criticism? You are the better fan because you don’t have the strength to call it as it is? You’re a legend in your own mind I’m sure. I’ll bet you’re the kind of idiot that thinks we are going to win the SB every year…..lol And you have the nerve to call anyone ignorant? Have you posted one intelligent thing on this message board? No doubt you will be voting for Obama!
A little late but happy birthday Al Davis. Support a team when they're winning and bash them when they're losing? Sounds so bandwagon doesnt it? If it was Donald Sterling or the owners of the Oakland Athletics I might be upset but this is Al fu**ing Davis! The man wants to win and even though it doesnt always work out you can't blame him for trying. He's created a brotherhood not just a team.
I'm also voting for Obama but that's for a different forumn.
Just because I criticize the man for being waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay past his prime and doing a lousy job over the last 20 years as GM doesn't mean I don't support my team. I take it on the chin every year from my friends like a man. You weak minds need to convince yourself everything is coming up roses because you can't handle the truth. So excuse me if my standards are a little higher than yours and I expect more. ESPECIALLY FROM AN IDIOT THAT CARES SOOOOO MUCH ABOUT WINNING!!!!! HIS DARN PROBLEM IS HE'S TRYING TOO HARD. IN OTHER WORDS, HE NEEDS TO HAND IT OVER TO A COMPETENT 21 CENTURY FOOTBALL MAN!!!!!!!!!!!!! THAT'S THE ONLY WAY THIS FRANCHISE WILL EVER BE RESPECTABLE AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! But how you could you know that, after all you will be voting for Obama because you need the GOVERNMENT TO TAKE CARE OF YOU!!!
Reading between the lines and being extremely perceptive, I've dedeuced that your're not an Obama fan. Si Say Pudding!
I wouldn't worry about Obamanation. His veneer is thin and he's being exposed for the lightweight flip flopper that he is. Anyone who makes a statement about what he is going to do with the Iraq situation without talking to General Petraeus first is not only inexperienced but very foolish. Even his left wing base is starting to doubt him.
Problem is, McCain is about as old as Al Davis and brings us full circle with what we've been discussing here. So, I'll just continue to stockpile ammo and vegetable seeds, flour, and salt and first aid supplies, old Penthouse mags and diesel for the generator! Before the end of this decade, Al may be the least of our problems.
I hear ya on the stockpiling and Obama is an empty suit for sure. I'm no big McCain fan, but I don't think his age is a problem. And I don't think Al's is the problem. When I say he is past his prime its from a running the organization standpoint. It's his philosophies and stubborness. Age is not his problem it's the dumb decisions he makes!

You make good points about a few things except for my weak mind and Obama. I agree that he tries too hard and that he should let someone else take over the GM duties. I know it could be worse though and I happy it's not. I can't imagine how KC Royal and other similar teams fans deal with the losing. I havent seen a good plan for the Raiders after Al so I'm not going to wish for his demise without seeing the future. I'm a Dodger fan and I watched the team fall apart when Fox took over so I know how bad it can get. I know you're a true fan from years of posting with you. I might not always agree with you but I enjoy your passion.
Since you brought up Obama again I'll address it. I don't believe in our two party system any more. I believe they eliminate quality candidates by the primaries. Out of the original choices I was going for Ron Paul but I believe they select our choices for us. What I'm doing is selecting the best of two evils. I don't want someone who is going to continue Bush's dirty work which is McCain. You say that Al Davis is too old to run the Raiders what about McCain running the country? He's about to turn 73 which is only 6 years younger than Davis. He's had his chance and it passed him by. I respect what Obama has come from and I think he gives the every day individual the hope to achieve whatever he desires. As for the Government taking care of me that's bullshi*. Every pay check I give the Federal Government at least 10% of my pay not including SS and others. I've never once been on disability, unemployment, or had my hand out to anyone including the government. If we really want to make a difference how about cleaning up congress and our entire dirty government. I don't always agree with people but I respect their opinion.
Let me address Al first. I never said he was too old or I never meant to emply that. When I say past his prime I mean he can't run the organization like he did in the old NFL and win in today's NFL. The man has lost his touch and continues to make far too many bad decisions. We are the only team that is not run like a corporation. Futhermore, he does not let his coaches do their jobs without getting in the way (been saying it for years and former players like Sapp, Moss, Carr just confirm it), he can't evaluate talent like he once could, he can't draft, he signs FA for way too much money, I could go on and on. Age is not his problem, stubborness and ego are his problems. As long as he is in charge, the Raiders will not win a SB much less make the playoffs that often. Sad but true.
As for Obama, I too was for Paul! But my friend, besides the war, how could you be for Paul who is for less government and a strict constitutionalist and say you are going to vote for Obama? And I agree the two party system has to go. Obama is a socialist borbering on communist. You are tired of Bush (who claims to be conservative but doubled the size of government), just watch this clown grow the government! As for the war, it's too late to just pull out and we've just about got this thing wrapped up. Obama my friend is the anti-Paul!
As for congress I agree, when need to vote these clowns out!
I apologize for the dependency on government, but most people voting for the clown are liberials who believe the government's role is to take care of them and others.
As for your taxes, if you are like me then you are probably are sick and tired of paying them only to see the government piss it away. And Obama will raise your taxes count on it! Let me introduce you to a tax system that will weaken the two party system and make this country stronger, the Fairtax. You can go to www.fairtax.org for more info. Basically it replaces the income tax (all forms, SS, Capital Gains, etc...) with a 23% national sales tax. This will not raise everything by 23%. Embedded in products you buy are income taxes that retailers have to pay the government so that would be replaced with the sales tax. No income tax returns and many many more benefits. Corporations will come back to enjoy the tax breaks which brings jobs back etc.....
What can I say, I agreed with everything you wrote including everything about Davis, Obama, Congress, and taxes. I wouldnt say that I am voting for Obama because I like Obama just because I'm torn between the lesser of two evils. Since I wrote last I have read some of Obama's books where he talks about not liking the white man and when push comes to shove he's going to support Muslims. This is exactly the opposite of what I thought he was supporting, leading me to not know what I'm going to do. I don't want to get to controversial and I probably should not post this but what the hell. We're here to figure this out right?
Below are > a few lines from Obama's books; In his > words! > > From > Dreams of My Father: > 'I ceased to > advertise my mother's race at the > age of 12 or 13, when I > began to suspect that by > doing so I was ingratiating > myself to > whites.' > > From > Dreams of My Father : > 'I found a solace > in nursing a pervasive sense > of grievance and animosity > against my mother's > race.' > > From > Dreams of My Father: > 'There was > something about him that made me > wary, a little too sure of > himself, maybe. And > white.'
> From > Dreams of My Father: > 'I never emulate > white men and brown men whose > fates didn't speak to my own. It was into my father's image, the black > man, son of Africa , that I'd packed all the attributes I sought in > myself , the attributes of Martin and Malcolm, DuBois and Mandela.' > > And FINALLY the Most > Damming one of ALL of them!!! > > From > Audacity of Hope: > 'I will stand with the > Muslims should the political > winds shift in an ugly > direction.' >
I probably should have verified the quote before posting. I have not reached the page in the book that it's on. I was not trying to imply that he's a radical just wanted to point out some interesting tidbits in his books. He's been baptized and says he's not Mulim. The context of the quote was concerning immigration. I have posted it below. My quote was a little off but I have no option to edit my post. i apologize for the inaccuracy. It seems to be harmless but there is a large group of people making a big deal about it.
The actual quote from the book is from page 261 and is as follows: "Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

hey what up maun?...lol...it's been a while since i have been called a jerk and it feels good, lol...
hitler, i tell what he was a brainwasher, kinda like davis...too many people see no wrong in what davis does, and they are ready to killl people if they say anythign about the guy...
i am not one of thse guys, i am notrious for ripping him...i don't care what he has done, i don't care if it's his team, i praise him when he does well, and i rip him when he does what i thin is wrong...he is the main reason of why we have sucked the last 5 years...he is in the spotlight every year "in the offseason" and it should not be like that...le'ts be honest, most of his decisions backfire on his [bleep]...we are tied for 3rd all time in the nfl with 10 games or more losses in a season streak...they said this on nlf live yesterday...
people get so pissed saying that all they say is negatvie stuff about us on tv but i remember me and your bro standing side by side fighting against others and we were like, "what else are they gonna say, we lose all the time"...no one is gonna baby us just because we won at one point maun, ya know?..oakland deserves to be ripped..too many stupid decisions had been made and it puts us under...too many players who was here said it seems not to be about football here in the front office, it's about control...sapp said the same thing and i know he ain't lying...
your very last sentence about davis sums it up and we don't even have to talk about it anymore, lol...i came back in here to edi, i just read my post and i msspelled like 7 words lol...hahahaha..peace

Take care,

Peace!

What is the context of the Muslim comment? If there is no more than that, we are scrrewed should he become head coach of the armed forces!
