People got to stop completely blaming the dogs and instead start blaming the people who have been irresponsible by not caring for their animals by letting them loose and also allowing them to be aggressive and dangerous to others. Dog owners need to be held responsible. People should have to apply for a license to own them as well as any other dog that's had a bad rep of attacking in the past. Until backyard breeders and people who breed for dog fighting are under control there will always be this problem.
You've just said though with out proper traning and owners these dogs can be agressive and dangerous dogs to others. This is true for amost any breed. However with pit bulls their jaws lock down. The breed has been so inbread that I feel its going to take some drastic measures to protect the public from attacks. I saw two boxers one night attack my mom's cat. They were running as a pack. The cat lost its leg and the owner never paid any damages. Dogs in general need to be controlled.
This attack happened to me, I was the one that lost her dog. Between my 81 year old mother and my Yorkie and trying to keep both safe was an absolute nightmare. Make no mistake these were pit bulls and they worked as a well trained team, taking turns jumping and trying to knock me over until they finally yanked my dog from my arms and he was dead in an instant. I was only three dorrs from my home and had to jump into the bed of a pickup while the agressive pit circled like a shark...these dogs have no business being loose on the streets, and if they are in the backyard...forget it! If they want to get out they will, as this is just one oa many attacks in the City of Hercules and PIT BULL SHOULD BE BANNED!!!!!
Have you ever owned a Pitbull? If you updated your information, read a few books, and maybe raised a couple of Pitbulls, you'll find that Pitbulls are actually quite loving and can get along well with both people and other dogs. Pitbulls are among the most popular dogs in this country and have been bread and raised by people who have no business ever owning a dog. Does the name Michael Vick sound familiar? Most of his fighting dogs went to good homes because they were adoptable. And remember, these were dogs raised to fight.
Gee....I wonder why Pit Bull lovers will come out of the woodworks in DEFENSE for LOVING dogs??
Because stupid, lame people like you and many others on this page are talking about a subject they have NO business talking about! If you haven't done research on them and KNOW about them then keep your mouth shut!
I live in Antioch and PROUDLY own 2 Pit Bulls! and they live and sleep in the same beds as my kids ages 7 and 2! In fact my 13 year old niece just won 4th place in basic obedience competition at the Antioch Fair. She trained with him for 2 months every other day. They loved her so much with my PITBULL they asked her to join the 4 H club! Pit Bulls are nanny dogs, they love kids! I am not going to argue there are messed up owners but that goes for EVERY breed!
For any Pit Bull owners out there having a hard time getting insurance (house or renters) Farmers WILL give you insurance! We have renters insurance thru them.
PITBULL AWARENESS DAY IS OCTOBER 24TH 2009. Last year we had something w/ Pet Food Express on Deer Valley. We are hoping to do the same thing this year. Its a Halloween costume contest. Last year we had 17 pitbulls dressed up! It went really good!! Picture People even came out to take pictures! Look for flyers. (@ starbucks) If we can we will be doing it again!! (money is tight & we pay for it out of our own pockets)
Maybe all the haters should come to see what great dogs Pit Bulls are when raised RIGHT!
I have been on the oppisite end, where I have had my pitbull on a leash, under my control and on our own property. A little ankle bitter came running up, yapping and getting in my dog's face. My Pit did not attack because I had control. The sheriff decided that they would take my dog because she's a Pit!!!!!! Not the ankle bitter that was not on a leash (and breaking the law) !!!! Stupid people and ignorant people who are discrimminating should have to educate themselves with reading Pit Bulls for "DUMMIES" Since they think they know about these loving animals.
I guess you don't live in Antioch where only 3 dogs are allowed. I have no interest in reading pitbull for dummies. I am tired of reading about pitbulls maiming and disfiguring children. Attacking and killing people even their owners or family members. Killing cats and other dogs when they get out of their yards. A pitbull is like a loaded gun and the owners should have to go to jail for any damage done by their loving little doggie.(problem: A lot of pitbull owners are cowards and run and hide the animal as soon as they bite someone)
Thank God that I don't live in Antioch.........with discrimmating people like you. BUT 8 of my Grandchildren do and guess what..........they all have Pits!!! Loaded gun ? Who would pull the trigger you or my Pit ? Yes, my Pit has fingers lol I am NOT a Coward..................the faults you find in others are usually your own.
Unless you really investigate what kind of dog was involved you don't honestly know! do you know how many times people SAY its a pit bull and it turns out NOT to be! just like the case in S. F. w/ Diane Wipple. Those WERE NOT pit bulls. ignorant people label a dog a pit bull and don't even know. Do the media ever correct saying the news we did yesterday on the pit bull attacking a lady wasn't a pit bull OF COURSE NOT! TRUST me that happens ALOT! I know because I am a DEFENDER of the PITBULL breed! I am not saying there are not stupid owners, those owners are giving us responsible owners a bad name. but that's like saying all black people live in the ghetto, all mexican's speak english and all white people are prissy.
I live in Antioch and plan on adding a 3rd pit bull to my family :)
My Pit Bulls have changed alot of people's views on them!
I agree with you that should an owner be responsible, register their dogs, train their dogs and keep secure (from running the streets in a pack) maybe, just maybe our streets will be safe. But let me be clear as I have had a long history with these dogs (pits) the damage they can do is devastating! I hope one day while you are taking a nap one of your loving dogs isn't sleeping with your two year old and chewing off her toes..I hope that you read that article about the family and their loving pit that did just that! I wonder how that family feels about their LOVING PIT BULL NOW!!!!! Don't you be a stupid owner...
I agree with you there! Pit Bulls should be banned from Hercules. It's just not safe to walk the streets around here, I have heard too many horror stories since the attack.
Hmm, if this is the second attack in that neighborhood then I promise you there is a person raising and training dogs for fighting or you have a grow house in the neighborhood that the dogs are guarding. Once these dogs have been acclimated to that lifestyle it is very hard to rehabilitate them. After the dogs are too old or too hard for the owner to control they just set them loose. My loser neighbor did this with his dogs. After calling animal control on a Thanksgiving Day due to the owner leaving the animals in the backyard with no food and because the dogs broke thru the back fence and attacked the back neighbor's dog. These dogs had already broken the fence on my side twice. The Animal control officer was very familiar with the owner and shared with the cops and I, that at that time, the owner had multiple dogs at 4 different addresses. Eventually these dogs broke loose again and terrorized the neighborhood for 4 hours before being shot by the cops. The owners had left them in the backyard with no food or water, again. Currently, he has 2 more dogs that he continues to mistreat, (complaints to Conta Costa animal control do nothing). All that ever happens is he has to attend classes about responsible pet ownership, and he can continue to buy/steal dogs instead of being forbidden to have any pets. And, once a month the house at the front of his property, which no one lives in, is a beehive of activity and clouds of pot smoke, but the cops do nothing.
we lived in Antioch up in the hills and about 3 or 4 yrs ago my dog a Jack Russel was attacked by two piit bulls that were running around loose, my mother-in-law had our dog on a lesh outside our front door so our dog Lindsey can do her business, lucky for my mother-in-law I happen to walk by and saw her and my dog being attacked,I ran out there and push my mother -in-law away and fought thoose two pitts off while holding on to my dog, those dogs did $600 dollars damage to my dog and bite me, which we had to pay out of pocket. luckly those dogs were caught and put to sleep.but they should all be put to sleep!! and now our apt building are letting pittbulls in and they shouldn't I thought there was a law about letting in big aggressived dogs in aptpartment buildings. I :am afraid for my dog now. something has to be done some kind of law..
So what Biloxi2SF is really saying is that he lives in a neighborhood with an ongiong pit bull problem and a dirtbag neighbor refusing to controll his dogs. But when the problem escallates to an intollerable level, instead of doing what he should have initially done, he calls police to handel a problem he should have devised a Permanent solution for much earlier; before these dangerous animals did so much dammage. It’s called a 9mm soultion. Ive used it and its Very effective. There’s a word for those who do nothing when faced with a clear and present danger: “SHEEPLE”
There is also a word for people like you - criminal. I'm not willing to go to prison for killing a dog and shooting a firearm in a neighborhood full of children. Sheeple is cute. Is that what your children are called? I don't think anyone wants to hear about you and your sexual activities with farm animals.
There are alot of things CA should do - I would personally like to see a ban on day workers standing in front of the Home Depot, but it isn't going to happen.
For those of you who think pit bulls are a danger, you need to see the special on the Michael Vick dogs. I think there were over 60 dogs taken. Most of them were rehab'd and some went to good homes. These dogs were kennelled for about 6 months and when the trainers went to see them, they expected them to be aggressive and lunging at other dogs. Instead, they were scared and cowering. The ones they showed on tv with their families were very loving, this is despite the fact that they were trained to fight. These dogs are forced to fight and do because they want to please. Don't blame the dogs, blame the people who force them to fight. Any dog can be agressive and dangerous. I commend the Judge who DID NOT order the Vick dogs put down. Instead, gave them a chance.
I appreciate that some pit bull owners love their pet and treat them well, but even well-intentioned owners sometimes find themselves dealing with problems. My neighbor who owns a lovely pit pull admitted to me that they don't want to have to ever tell another neighbor that their cat or dog "had an accident." It's the nature of the dog to go after small animals, just like cats chase mice or birds. It's innate.
My cat was hunted by two loose pit bulls and caught... and killed. Neighbors witnessed it and couldn't stop it. They caught the dogs after 12 hours of following a trail of phone calls reporting 2 dogs chasing people's pets. The brought them to me to see if I knew who they belonged to, and although they were large pit bulls, they had the sweetest faces. Their tails were wagging and I felt terrible for them. However, they had killed my cat, and just 10 minutes prior in the same spot, my husband had let my 1 year old daughter walk ahead of him to the car in our driveway. This could have played out tragically.
I just want to point out that it's not fair to keep animals that pose a risk to humans or pets. I'm sure the pit bull owners would be clamoring for a mountain lion to be removed if it killed their dog.
Why is it the dogs' fault that the owner wasn't responsible? If the dog that killed your cat was a lab, german shepard, etc. I bet you wouldn't be posting a comment.
If all dogs were not safe to be around, then yes, I'd be just as concerned. If it's about owners, then why aren't we all on board with dog-ownership laws? It's easy to point to the owners and advocate for the dog, but in the meantime there are victims and no preventative measures available to potential victims. It's all just back and forth with more pets and humans getting maimed or killed. Frankly, why is another guy's pet Pit Bull any more important than my pet cat? She meant just as much to me, but she's gone for no reason, had no chance of survival and there are absolutely no consequences to make a difference to Pit Bull (or dangerous dog) owners.
Pit Bull dogs are as dangerous as a loaded gun set to go off. I think I would rather take my chances with a loaded gun. Just today there was a call for PD for 2 agressive pit bulls chasing a woman. this seems to be a common occurance in Antioch lately.
The key word to these comments is "STRAY" dogs. Discriminating against these animals is wrong ! Go after the owners that are letting them stray. These helpless animals are very loving and don't need ignorant people judging them. Stupid people need to read "Pitbulls for DUMMIES" Then you might know what you are talking about.........not strays!!!!
