My question is why just spring? I have both a gas grill and a charcoal grill w/a side mounted fire box and I grill all year long. If it ain't raining to the point that I can't get my grill lit you just might find me in the backyard fireing a hunk of meat for dinner. And yes I think it is un-American to grill without a good, cold beer in your hand.
In fact tonite I got a whole "flat chicken" to throw on the grill.
Take a whole chicken and cut out the entire backbone so it opens up like a book. Lay it inside down and press until it flattens out. I like to do it this way as it cooks more even and has more surface area for the seasonings and smoke to react with.
