Highway4 bypass naming

Living in oakley, I've not had any oppurtunity's to go onto the new bypass until yesterday early morning. I was coming on laural rd and as I got up to where the freeway starts I couldn't find the entrance to head towards antioch or highway 4 west and ended up stuck going eastbound and ending up off the first exit at lone tree. Feeling very frustrated I just took lonetree down to hillcrest and then to highway 4. This morning I went again down laurel and discovered why I'd gone the wrong way. The sign says Hercules. Huh? I didn't know hercules was anywhere around here. As a matter of fact I know its not around here and I'm wondering why, and who decided it needed to say hercules. Why not Hwy 4, Antioch, Pittsburg,Concord, etc. Hercules? Is this a cruel joke? Is there a bypass in hercules that says Antioch? Anyone have any idea why the name they gave it?

Because thats where the freeway ends? Yeah poor choice, but that is where Highway 4 ends, or starts depending on your point of view. Even better yet why do the entrances for the bypass that is going to be Highway 4 all say Bypass Road?

Yeah, Bypass Road does sound like it's the route to the nearest hospital. I read an article about the confusion and there's a chance that they will make some canges in the future. Who the heck plans these things? Couldn't someone see that this was a boneheaded choice of signage?

That's weird because in Concord at the 242 intercange (using Stoney's spelling here) it always said Richmond. You don't think that with all this negative hype abut Richmond they didn't put it on the sign because they were afraid nobody would go that direction, do you? If I lived in Richmond, I'd feel a little slighted and look into why it says Hercules. To be fair, I haven't noticed exactly what the signs say at the bypass and the end of 242 (maybe they changed that one to Hercules?), so I'll have to make a point to look at it next time. Maybe it's because little Hercules is all grown up now, when before it was too little a town to be worthy of having it's name on a sign? This is a good question for the Time's "Queen of the Road." I bet the Queen knows.

You wrote how CalTrans said they might make some canges. Maybe that's what you meant? I don't know, I thought it was a typo, but perhaps it's some new type of highway slang I'm not familiar with? I guess by saying you might make some canges, people can't come back later and get mad at you for not making any changes. -------- Ha, Ha, since I already replied to your post, you can't edit it now and make any spelling canges. You're not setting a very good example for that girl who won the spelling bee. Hey, I'm only picking on you because you picked on me for my spelling on the Disburbing Movie thread. Touche! (That's French, I don't know how to do the little accent thingy over the e.)

Damn, how did that abut get in my post? You could have been a pal and let me check my post for errors before you replied to it. ----- Crap, I replied to my own post before this one and now I see I spelled Disturbing as Disburbing and can't change it now. This isn't a spelling bee, so what do you say we just go back to the old rules about spelling where anything goes? Otherwise, this sideshow might go on forever. FYI: Abut is a real word. It's also a place apparently as I discovered when looking it up: Definitions of Abut Head on the Web: Abut Head is a forested headland on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island. It is located north of the village of Whataroa and west of ... Why would anyone go all the way to New Zealand just to visit Abut Head?

The sign that confused me was in oakley where laurel becomes highway 4. Turn towards hercules and you'll go to antioch/concord, miss that turn and you end up in brentwood. It made and still makes no sense to me. I am wondering if there isn't some sort of bypass in hercules with a sign that says....antioch. LOL

If you get on the Bypass at Lauel and head toward Lonetree, just past the area where you enter the Bypass where the Laurel ends into a big hill are signs that say "no left turn, no right turn no u-turn", so where are you supposed to go, straight into the hill (more of a cliff that they cut into the hill), or just stay there and wait till Laurel in Oakley meets up to Laurel in Anitoch?

P5 I've not noticed that yet. Really I don't have that much occasion to use the bypass at all and both times I did use (or attempt to use it) it was dark so I'm not sure where your talking about. One of these days I'm going to just drive it and see where the heck it does go. Maybe I'll end up in Hercules =)

Maybe we could end all of this confusion if they just re-named it "OFEC Thru-way". Might even be enough to get some free labor to keep it clean and Graffiti free! ________________________________________________________________ That's just my opinion, but I could be Wrong.
