How to respond to a poster.

I just spent an horrendous amount of time looking for a recent post. I had to scroll through 2 pages of posts to find it. It was a post by roygur at 3:01. Now, it would be easier if posters would respond only to the last post in a thread. That would put the reply at the end of the thread instead of in the middle somewhere. If responding to someone in particular you might want to copy part of their post in your reply. That way we know what it is in reference to. It doesn't look like we will be going back to the old board so we have to find ways to make this one easier. Any other ideas??

It took me a 1 year, 7 weeks to finally find this thread, Smokey.  Now, what was the question?

Smokey,

If you're just responding to a particular portion of someone's post.... then copying that section either surrounded by quotation marks or in a different color, (it seems that blue is the most popular), is the best way to let someone know what you're responding to. It does get tedious though, and one certain infamous poster from over the hill used to carry this practice to the extreem. It brings to mind that communication technique they teach in seminars where you're supposed to rephrase and repeat what a person said to you before you respond.

"So what you're telling me is that my Memory Foam pillow has reached its saturation point from my night-time drooling and you've noticed some interesting microbial flora and fauna establishing a foothold in the stains? Do I have that right?"

I guess that works for keeping communications on track but it sounds kind of forced after a while. Also, it isn't needed if you're just responding to the topic in general and want the "conversation" to flow more naturally. The best thing to do if you're responding to someone in particular is to just type in the person's username at the top of your post followed by a comma, like I did up top there.

Sometimes you don't need to identify who you are responding to, like when Cowboy posts his YouTube Cricket noise.  It's obvious in those situations.
