Fresh and Easy has confirmed that they will build a store at the corner of Laurel and Ohara. This is exactly the type of store I'd like to see here. I hope this plan sticks.

I guess that will be the second major store when Rite-Aid moves to the north west corner. I'll bet Safeway is steamed, maybe they should have built when they got the plans approved.

I think this is a great store for oakley. Now they'll have tax revenue.
If you read the oakley paper 2 weeks ago it said safeway hasn't made up their mind yet.

Grocery stores that are mostly about food (Traders, Whole Foods, Food Maxx) and not the sundries (Walmart, Costco, most traditional grocery stores) generate little in the way of sales taxes. Property taxes, yes, but the cities don't see much of that, either, only about 13%.

Rite-Aid is moving to the northwest corner of O'Hara & Laurel. The plans have been submitted and approved, no idea when they will start construction but soon I imagine, unlike Safeway who bought the land submitted plans (at lest twice, from what I have been told) had them approved and still hasn't started even after posting a sign saying they were comming.

Wait until the pro-union anti-WalMart crowd in Oakley find out that Tesco's Fresh & Easy is nonunion :)
I note that the location of Oakley's Fresh & Easy store is going to be located at what the City leaders are calling the "New Entry to Oakley" off the Hwy 4 Bypass.

Arne, I know you'd like to think those of us who don't want walmart in oakley are not wanting it because its not union. Your Wrong. I think this new store will be a great addition into oakley. I'm glad it is coming.
Yes I'm for unions but not to the exclusion of non union stores.
I don't like walmart Period! I shop at Raleys. (non-union) I shop at trader joes (non union) So please get off your high horse thinking that because your pro union means you don't like anything non-union.

mornsky, sorry, but no horses at my homestead.
It was my attempt at a little humor which apparently fell a little short of the mark :(
Like you, I'm very happy that Fresh & Easy chose to build their new stores in Oakley and Antioch.
I am very familiar with Tesco in the UK and their American Fresh & Easy markets will be similar to Tesco's "High Street" stores in size and products. You will find their product pricing very competitive with Winco.
As someone who supports Oakley, I believe this will be a great addition to the city, although the City won't garner much in sales tax, since grocery stores have few taxable items. It is the Oakley customer that wins!
By the way, Raley's is unionized with the UFCW.

If their unionized then why when safeway and albertson's were on strike some years back, weren't they on strike? I know their pharmacists were union but I didn't think the grocery clerks were, but I could be wrong.(oh my!) Any clerks out their with the definative answer?
Anyway whatever, the point I was trying to make is I don't decide to shop based on whether or not they are union. If I like the store they get my business.
I'd love to see some nice Restaurant's come out here. A fresh choice, sweet tomatoes, etc. Even some of the outlet stores would all be nice.
I also wouldn't mind if they didn't develop that area at all. I'd prefer to see the money the city wants to spend put into rehab of the downtown and increasing business (small business) downtown. We used to have alot more cute antique stores but I think they've mostly gone out of business. Too hard to park down there as there is no where really to park besides in front of the stores.

mornsky, just Google "Raley's and UFCW" and you'll get your answer quickly.
I've always thought that Oakley would be a great place to put a Factory Outlet center, like the ones in Napa, Vacaville (Nut Tree) and Morgan Hill.
Factory Outlet centers are "destination" places which would provide a lot of needed sales tax revenue to Oakley, but you'd have to put up with the same traffic issues you've raised with Wal-Mart.
Starting up a restaurant is a very expensive proposition and half of the start-up restaurants fail within the first year. Of those that survive their first year, half of them will fail in their second year. This explains why chain restaurants are more successful since they can spread their profits and losses over the entire chain; family-owned restaurants don't have that luxury.

Yeah the traffic doesn't thrill me. But you know it'd be more tolerable without walmart. =)
How about a borders bookstore. I love reading! They tend to be a little cheaper then the one in slatten ranch.
I've also heard rumors that if a super walmart comes to oakley the antioch one will close due to proximity of stores. You need to push harder to get the antioch store built up.
As for the restaurant start up business, the same can be said for any business's. Its hard to keep business's going. You have to sell something people want and something people are willing to pay for.
As for googling raleys and ufcw it doesn't really matter. I shop at raleys because I like the customer service. I like their produce and I like their meat selection.
I also shop at winco. I don't buy perishables at winco, rather I buy dog/cat/bird/fish food (yes I have them all) canned goods, toilet paper, soda. I find their meat quality not as good as I want and their produce can be good or bad. <--why bother when you can't depend on their quality. Trader joes I love their spinach salad, sharp cheese, breads and odd assortment of new things that are good.

Raley's has always been a union store. The reason they don't strike with the other stores is they sign a sweetheart contract. It means they will honor whatever is settled upon through negotiations. Can you tell my hubby worked for Raleys and was a union man for 40 years. Nice retirement too.
I doubt the Antioch Wally world will close. They didn't close the Pittsburg store and it is just about the same distance.

Not all Raleys are Union. I know because I work for them. Oakley and the Brentwood stores are nonunion except for meat and general merchandise (which includes pharmacy). Antioch and Pittsburg are still union.

I don't think its the best area to begin with. I was in the store when someone stole liquor and ran. I've also seen more then one seedy looking character in the parking lot.

This is a good thing for oakley; competiion for the big guys. I hate shopping at safeway because $100 dollars doesn't buy much. I shop a Trader Joes because you get more for your money. Actually we cut our grocery bill almost in half by shopping at trader joes and the food is "whole" food.
You still have to go to railey's or safeway to get the BBQ goods though.

Same here! I love Traders. I absolutely had to go to Safeway on Balfour this evening (no time), and almost threw a hissy fit. I can't believe their prices. I don't think people realize just how much money they can save at Traders. How about eggs for $1.19 or OJ at $1.99 or a bag of chips, size large, for less than $2 bucks.
I think there is a misperception about Trader Joe's. Some people have heard that it is expensive, say like a Whole Foods. I try to spread the word as much as I can that they have amazing prices, and amazing food. Now, I have shopped at Whole Foods, and their prices are very, very, scary. Love the store though!

I, too love to shop at Trader Joe's, but rarely do. I can't stand to sit in that blasted traffic on Lone Tree. I live in the Vintage Parkway area of Oakley, so it's a royal pain to go all the way to Trader Joe's.
My son works for Whole Foods, and he tells me how incredibly expensive they are. $20 for a pumpkin pie at Thanksgiving! They treat their employees very well, though. He says it's an awesome company to work for.
