Jerome Mathis was cut today by the Washington Redskins. I know that often times these posts orgiginate from the fools who monitor the waiver wires and wish to claim every has-been, former superstar or hard-case player that crosses but assuming he was cut to make room for other players and not due to medical or disciplinary reasons he could be a solid pick up. We desperately need a return man now that Carr and Rhodes are gone. In 2005 Mathis went to the Pro Bowl as a return man for the Texans. He's been hampered by injuries lately but Washington signed him for pennies and no bonus. I'm pretty sure we could do the same and if it doesn't work out he's off the team during Training camp.

Thanks for the reply even if it was out of sympathy lol. I wasn't expecting a ton of turnout on this particular post because Mathis hasn't been healthy lately thus everyone has forgotten who he is. But I at least thought I'd get 2-3 posts from people who typically follow the players and who is available etc. Yikes... Go figure, Koren Robinson who's not nearly the return man Mathis is but because of his draft status has a better name gets a post up with significant dialogue. But Mathis who I feel would be a better return man, comes with less baggage, and would be at least the same kind of receiver gets nothing. Just goes to show that if they're not on ESPN, regardless of the reason, nobody really knows who they are anymore.

as i've mentioned, as with koren robinson, there's no downside to bringing him into camp. while i don't recall him ever being used much as a WR in the league to date, he was definitely an above-average return guy. and god only knows we need help in that area. JLH has some serious work to do in training camp and preseason to earn a spot on the roster, especially with the other WR we added in the draft and through FA. not to change topic, but odell thurman was released by cincy earlier today. the guy's got talent, yes baggage as well, but would presumable be available affordably to pick up. what are your thoughts on him? again i see virtually no risk at bringing him in. another young LB to the core of morrison and howard would be interesting.

I think you and I are on the same wavelength when it comes to training camp. I see no problem with bringing in as many guys as the league will allow for try-outs. Especially if you're really searching for depth at one particular position. Not only does depth increase competitiveness but it also allows you a better chance of picking up the best players at your position. Between Mathis and Robinson I'd probably rather go Mathis based on the baggage that comes with Robinson. But if both came in I'd have no problem because someone is bound to be gone by the end of camp. As far as Thurman goes, for me that's a pretty big grenade to throw into your locker room. Yes, he's good and solid. But he brings distractions with him. I don't know the whole story but I think that there was probably more to it than what was published because I can't see a team sticking by you through your year long suspension only to release you for attending a funeral. But, he's a baller, and if he can stay out of trouble in Oakland and Napa during pre-season then I don't see why he wouldn't be worth the risk. Provided of course he's intent on being a good boy.

The team has Tyvon Branch, DeAngelo Hall, Higgins, etc. Even McFadden has return experience. With all the signings this team's made, he'd need to bring more to the table than just return expertise.

I disagree... Higgins isn't much of a return man, or WR. He's not bad, but he's not great either. Branch is a rookie and thus unproven which is fine, he can prove himself in pre-season. But do you want to see DeAngelo Hall or McFadden back there returning kicks in all honesty? I don't. Remember, the guys we pick up for pennies and no bonus cash can be cut during camp and have virtually no effect on our cap what-so-ever.

He's no scrub and his return ability in college was a factor in drafting him. Hall and McFadden are too valuable (at least McFadden is). I just don't see Mathis being brought in right now. Maybe sometime in midseason like Tim Dwight was in 2007. Given the current salary cap situation, two to four UDFAs should make the team given the shortage of draft choices this year.

I am with you on Odell man. A lot of Mock drafts I saw had us taking him in his draft year. Training camp tryouts don't mean much to me. If a player can make it through preseason without getting in trouble, I figure he's less likely to get into trouble during the season. Also, considering the fact he's stayed out of trouble for the last year of his suspension, and skipped voluntary minicamp due to the death of his grandmother. The Bengals are the most disfunctional franchise in this league. They turn down two first round draft picks plus more for a 30 some year old loud mouth WR (who I think is fantastic), but they cut a guy with some off the field issues for going to a family funeral. What a joke. -I AM THE DARKNESS OF THE FUTURE- BOOK OF NAVI CH. 22 Phase 1 "The time for hard work is now! The time to plan and scheme is today!
