This, more than any other misstep in American diplomacy in the 21st century, will guarantee a continuation of conflict in the Balkans and undermine the authority of the United Nations. UN Resolution 1244 clearly states:
“Reaffirming the commitment of all Member States to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the other States of the region, as set out in the Helsinki Final Act and annex 2”
This is a reaffirmation of Kosovo’s status as an autonomous province of Serbia, not as an independent republic that has a right of withdrawal from the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Further, Serbia is the legitimate successor state to FRY, as all other Republics have withdrawn from that government structure.
To understand the scope of this action, and the most likely consequences, one needs to have an understanding of history of the region and of the Serb nation. Serbia was literally born on the Fields of Kosovo, when Prince Lazar unified the Serb realms to form a Serb Army and challenged the invasion of the Ottoman Turks. Though the Serbs lost the battle, the invasion was stopped and the Serb Nation was born. Prince Lazar was born near Novo Brdo (in Kosovo) and died near Pristina (in Kosovo).
Consider how the US would feel if the Amish in Pennsylvania took up arms and attacked the non Amish in Pennsylvania, when we responded with additional police and military force, foreign powers stepped in to “end the killing” while recognizing our territorial integrity, established an UN interim administration to govern Pennsylvania, and then decided to recognize the Amish Pennsylvania as a legitimate sovereign country, separate from the US. This is what we have done here.
