Texas Slaps a Tax on Strip Clubs

...In what some have dubbed the "pole tax," the Lone Star State will require its 150 or so strip clubs to collect a $5-per-customer levy, with most of the proceeds going to help rape victims. The tax goes into effect on New Year's Day. Club owners and some of their customers say the money is going to a noble cause, but they argue that the tax infringes on their First Amendment right to freedom of expression, that it will drive some bars out of business and that it unfairly links their industry to sex crimes...

"This is an industry that largely employs women, and this gives them an opportunity to raise funds for a crime that affects women," said state Rep. Ellen Cohen, a Houston Democrat who sponsored the bill, approved by the Legislature in May... But Elle, a 28-year-old former Dallas dancer, said she worries the tax will hurt women like herself who work their way through college by stripping. She earned a degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and said sheruns a computer-servicing business with her husband. Elle said she averaged $200 a day at the Lodge — "on good days, a hell of a lot more."

Utah enacted a 10 percent tax on topless clubs in 2004. That same year, the Texas Legislature considered a $5-per-head fee, with the money going toward schools. But lawmakers didn't like the link between strip clubs and kids — the idea was mocked as "Tassels for Tots" — and the proposal died. The idea was resurrected last summer by the Texas Association Against Sexual Assault as a way to open more rape-crisis centers.

In their lawsuit, the clubs said nude dancing is protected by the First Amendment and the state can't selectively tax it, even if it is conduct some may find offensive. Besides, they argued, the tax is so broad it could apply to concerts by performers like Madonna or Britney Spears who wear low-cut tops...

Man cleared of rape by DNA tests freed after 27 years in prison

Jan 3, 2008 DALLAS A Dallas man wrongly imprisoned since 1981 is free after a judge recommended overturning his 1981 aggravated sexual assault conviction.
With several of his eight siblings cheering his release, 47-year-old Charles Chatman was released on his own recognizance after serving nearly 27 years of a 99-year sentence.

That made Chatman the longest imprisoned inmate of 15 from Dallas County to be cleared by DNA testing. The 15 is the most of any county in the nation. In all, at least 30 Texas inmates have been cleared by DNA testing, according to the Innocence Project. That's the most of any state in the nation.

Story of woman raped twice by same man false, S.F. police say Jaxon Van Derbeken, Chronicle Staff Writer - December 8, 2007

San Francisco - -- Last month's report of a woman raped by the same man twice in five days was fabricated, San Francisco police said Friday, and composite sketches the woman helped generate of her alleged attacker have been removed from the department's Web site.

The 27-year-old woman first told police that on Nov. 10 she was assaulted on the street during a purse snatching and again five days later after the assailant apparently learned her address and attacked her at her home. She did not report the first attack until after the second one supposedly occurred The woman told police that she was first raped about 5:30 p.m. Nov. 10 as she walked from the Glen Park BART station toward Bosworth Street....

On Nov. 15, the woman told police, she was driving up to her home when the man reappeared, this time with a gun, and followed her into the garage. He then raped the woman a second time, she told authorities.
Sgt. Steve Mannina, spokesman for the department, said the woman admitted to police she made up the account of the attacks. "It turned out after further investigation, that it never occurred," Mannina said, but declined to elaborate on what led police to discover that the account was fabricated.

"We plan on conferring with the D.A.'s office on whether criminal charges will be filed for making a false police report," Mannina said. "When someone comes forward and reports a crime, we have a moral responsibility and obligation to investigate it," Mannina said.
Now that the investigation is complete, he said, "We hope that the dissemination of this information that this didn't occur will set this community's mind at ease."

IN THE WORLD of gender politics, death is the latest measure of parity.

Not only do women outlive men, but recent research shows that they're also being born more often than in the past. The allegedly stronger sex, it turns out, is really the weaker and more vulnerable -- from conception until death do us part.

Men's health is a relatively recent concern -- and a political hot potato -- as research monies the past 20 years or so have been directed increasingly toward women's health. Thanks in large part to the grassroots Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation, breast cancer awareness has turned the world pink...

The pink crusade took off in part because, let's face it, women are formidable organizers. They also have successfully convinced the nation that medical research is sexist and biased toward men. Though this myth has been largely debunked, it persists as a perception.

In fact, as Cathy Young reported in Reason magazine, more than 400 clinical trials were conducted on breast cancer between 1966 and 1986, compared to just 121 on prostate cancer. But who's counting?

Men have begun fighting back against what they now perceive to be bias toward women's health, lobbying the past few years for a federal Office of Men's Health.

Ultimately, of course, no one wins the war of healthier-than-thou, while another layer of bureaucratic one-upmanship is just that.

A better means for improving men's health -- and saving the males -- is for women to recognize that males are in trouble and that a world without men, while perhaps calmer, would be far less interesting and fun.
As we've recently witnessed, when women want something, they usually get it.

Due to their "Oppression by the Patriarchy") be Punished by Payment of Child Support by the "Father" - would seemingly conflict with the corresponding demand that Turkey Baster Babies (those conceived through Heterosexual Procreation - not involving a Penis touching a Womyn) Have No Fathers - and are simply the result of using an Anonymous Genderless 'Donor.'

However, this fails to incorporate the necessary level of Orwellian Doublethink - which allows DNA as Evidence sufficient to Send a Man to the Death Chamber, but Not sufficient to prove he is a Father - unless of course it also incorporates punishment for Heterosexual Relations as a Part of the Charges. In short - Use a Penis, Go to Jail is a fair analysis of the law for those who cannot afford to pay.

No Ladies’ Man - John Kerry has a lame pick-up line.

Desperate men often resort to clichéd lines when trying to snare women. Senator John Kerry must be desperate, because he dragged out the tired, misleading statistic about the so-called wage gap during last night's debate; namely, that women only earn 76 cents for each man's dollar.

This factoid comes from Department of Labor data on the average wage of a full-time working woman and the average wage of a full-time working man. And, yes, if you look at those numbers you will find that the average woman earns about three quarters of the income of the average man.

But that statistic ignores many relevant factors that affect a worker's take-home pay. For starters, it doesn't adjust for number of years worked. On average, women spend about a decade out of the workforce to care for their families. It should come as no surprise to Senator Kerry that a 35-year-old woman reentering the workforce after ten years off earns less than a man or woman who worked continuously during that time.

The wage-gap statistic also fails to consider educational attainment. Today, women earn more than half of all bachelor's and master's degrees, but it wasn't always that way. Older women in the workforce tend to have less education than their male peers, which affected their career path, their salaries, and ultimately Department of Labor data.

Women and men also often have different priorities when assessing employment opportunities. One survey of working women found that for nearly three quarters a flexible schedule was "very important" when considering a job. This means that many women are willing to trade more money for more flexibility or time off.

Gender warriors at leftist feminist groups like the Feminist Majority and the National Organization for Women lament that women still sacrifice their careers to take on a disproportionate share of childcare responsibilities. But many women sincerely want to spend more time with their families. And regardless of whether it's out of duty or desire, full-time working women tend to spend less time in the office than full-time working men. The recently released Department of Labor time-use study revealed that a full-time working woman spends a half hour, or seven percent, less time in the office on an average work day than the typical full-time working man.

Several studies that took these factors into account found a considerably smaller wage gap between men and women. One study focused on childless men and women aged 27 to 33 and found that women in that group earned 98 cents for every male dollar.

While this information is encouraging since it suggests that similarly situated men and women can earn the same amount, the ultimate goal should not be to achieve parity on this artificial measure. If some women want to forgo more dollars for more time with family, then the "wage gap" that results isn't a problem, it's just a number. Attempts to "fix" the perceived problem — for example, by forcing businesses to report to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission their process for setting and adjusting wages as feminist groups sometimes propose — will make women worse off. To more easily comply with this regulation and avoid the threat of government action, many employers might simply no longer offer the very kinds of flexible work arrangements most appealing to many women.

But if you still aren't convinced that "76 cents on the dollar" is a misleading statistic, consider what its veracity would mean. If women perform the same work as men for three quarters of the pay, then a company that hired only women would have a huge advantage over its competitors. Its fixed employment costs would be much lower for the same amount of output. Sexism in the marketplace would have to be so strong that other companies would rather lose businesses and have higher labor costs — maybe go bankrupt — rather than try to attract these productive female employees by offering them more money. To believe that a huge persistent wage gap exists is to believe that the market truly doesn't work.

The market does work. That does not mean that every woman — or man — will be blessed by the perfect employer. Certainly some women experience discrimination and are treated unfairly, which affects their pay and these numbers. But Senator Kerry's statement implying that this wage gap is the result of pure discrimination ignores the real choices that American women make about their careers. It was a sorry ploy to convince women they are victims who need a President Kerry as their savior. Women should treat his advance like a barroom pick-up line and tell this suitor to get lost.

Sex Offender Accused of Raping Boy, 6, in Public Library

Boston -  A convicted sex offender was arrested this week and charged with
raping a 6-year-old boy in the New Bedford public library, feet away from
his mother, who was working on a computer.

The suspect, Corey Saunders, 26, had pleaded guilty to attempted rape of a
child in 2001, but was released from prison in 2006 over the strong
objections of prosecutors and psychiatrists...

Judge Richard Moses of Superior Court had ruled in December 2006 that
prosecutors did not prove in a civil commitment hearing that Mr. Saunders
was a sexually dangerous person and that he should be held in a treatment
program after his sentence was completed. Instead, Mr. Saunders received
probation and was required to register as a Class 3, or high risk, sex
offender.

Paul F. Walsh, the former Bristol County district attorney who handled Mr.
Saunders's case, strongly objected to his release, as did psychiatrists who
testified at the hearing. In an interview, Mr. Walsh said he and others had
feared that Mr. Saunders would commit another crime.

"I was D.A. for 16 years," Mr. Walsh said, "and I put him in the top 10
most dangerous offenders. Everybody knew this guy was just another incident
waiting to happen."

Pregnant man speaks out in Advocate article. The Daily Telegraph (Sydney) 27 March 2008

An American man who claims to be pregnant has written a detailed account of what it is like to carry a baby. In the article, published in gay rights magazine The Advocate... Thomas Beatie, who was born a woman named Tracy Lagondino, had reassignment surgery to appear as a man outwardly. Beatie is therefore legally recognised as a male, but he never surgically altered his reproductive organs, he said in the article.

Hoping to keep his reproductive options open, Beatie had a chest reconstruction and began taking testosterone... "I stopped taking my bimonthly testosterone injections," he said in his article. "It had been roughly eight years since I had my last menstrual cycle, so this wasn't a decision that I took lightly."

After problems accessing cryogenic sperm banks, Thomas and Nancy eventually resorted to home insemination. When he finally got pregnant, he had an ectopic pregnancy with triplets.

"It was a life-threatening event that required surgical intervention, resulting in the loss of all embryos and my right fallopian tube," he said.

On successfully getting pregnant a second time, their baby girl now has a clean bill of health.

The feeling:

So how does it feel to be a pregnant man? "Despite the fact that my belly is growing with a new life inside me, I am stable and confident being the man that I am... "I will be my daughter's father, and Nancy will be her mother. We will be a family."

The road to pregnancy has been no easy ride for Beatie. He and his wife have had to battle community disdain as well as family pressures to realise their dream. As Beatie recalls in his article, "(the doctor) was shocked by our situation and told me to shave my facial hair. After a $300 consultation, he reluctantly performed my initial checkups.

"He then required us to see the clinic's psychologist to see if we were fit to bring a child into this world and consulted with the ethics board of his hospital.

"A few months and a couple thousand dollars later, he told us that he would no longer treat us, saying he and his staff felt uncomfortable working with 'someone like me'".

His and Nancy's families have been similarly cynical. Beatie recalls that after his first failed pregnancy, his brother commented, "It's a good thing that happened. Who knows what kind of monster it would have been."

Among many other issues to arise from transgender pregnancy is the health of the fetus. Although only minimal research has been performed on the issue, experts are split.... Michael Bartalos, a New York geneticist who works with many transgender patients, is not so sure. He said that because Beatie has been taking medications such as hormones as part of his transgender treatment, he could have contaminated his eggs.

And even if Beatie's baby is born healthy, he said, "Who knows what might happen to her in 20 years? (The baby) could be at higher risk for certain types of cancer development."

He had his breasts removed and started bimonthly testosterone injections. Now identifying as male, Thomas legally married Nancy. The couple wanted a child but Nancy was unable to carry a child. So Thomas volunteered.

"How does it feel to be a pregnant man?" asked Thomas...In a technical sense I see myself as my own surrogate...

In three segments '20-20' provided its myopic seeing eye watchdog spin on the Turkey Baster Baby Boom as well as the deseprate attempts to Destroy Gender and Promote Homo-Anal Perversions, although the liberal use of deliberately sanitized and intentionally misleading euphemisms as a way of avoiding admitting such stark facts was heavily employed to cloak this reality in a smarmy PC Gloss over for the cameras. However, the Common Denominator to all the stories was MISANDRY - And literally eradicating the Missing Man from the Picture was an actual Goal of the Producers / Writers.

For example - a story about Turkey Baster Babies and "Anonymous Donors" (a true leftist political oxymoron, as the DNA Identity of the Parent in found the Child) and whether children have a right to know who their parents are, failed to take in to account the realities of the law in regard to Men and heterosexual procreation versus "Donors" - who are treated as if they have No Gender, No Identity and of course No Respnsibility for their offspring. Perhaps the most telling argument Not Investiagated is the one that claims unless these 'Donors' are allowed to remain anonymous (and thus exempt from discovery or responsibility) that very few would be willing to become parents.

Of course, discussion of the Dyke Separatist / Neo-Exterminationist pogrom of creating "A World Devoid of Men" was not part of the investigation either, although they were quite happy to exclude mention of Real Fathers and focus mainly on the rights and privileges of Mothers and Children versus - Anonymous and Genderless 'Donors'.

Another story tried to push the 'Born Homo-Anal' in the genes story, without any scientific backup - but with home movies of boys acting goofy and wanting to play with dolls as proof that - well they kind of skirted around the whole angle of how this lead to membership in the coprophile cult of feces focused homo-anal perversions, but perhaps they will one day find a 'Coprophile' Gene that explains the behaviors of this group.

Finally, they ran what even they admitted was a potential hoax story out of a radical homosex propaganda source... about the farcical attempt to pretend that a Pregnant - Self Mutilating - Dyke Misandrist had actually changed Her Gender and become 'male' and was thus going to give birth as 'his' own surrogate... Ahem

Nope - the Demands of the Misandry Lobby are quite firm - No Men Allowed, Even Token Ones, Unless they are 'Male Feminists' - because anyone else would just be too Ungood for the Vanilla.

Another rag rage was by Columnist Leonard Pitts, trashing people of Faith and Conscience for failing to pander to the Radical Homosex agenda of Sick Hatreds and Vile Perversoins - and employing the same endless repetition of tired old sanitized & misleading euphemisms that radical homosex propgandists have used for many decades.

Coming to ALL California Schools: Transgender 3rd Grade Boys (CRI)

As word continues to spread about SB 777's outrageous sexual policies for public schools, citizens simply cannot believe the shocking situations these policies will produce. But sadly, these situations are not just hypothetical, they are real. The latest such story comes from Pennsylvania, where a 3rd grade boy will be coming to school as a girl.

According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, parents of the boy asked school officials to help them with a "social transition" at school. Incredibly, the Haverford School District not only agreed to this request, but then sent a letter to every parent informing them that a guidance counselor would meet with all of the school's 100 third-grader to "explain why their classmate would now wear girls' clothes and be called by a girl's name."

Parents were horrified to learn that school would authorize this type of warped "counseling" for students without parental input. "Why is the school introducing this subject to 8- and 9-year-olds?" wrote one parent on a local blog. "Why were we not notified sooner. (sic) We received the letter today, the discussion at school is tomorrow."

Unfortunately, as the result of SB 777, these types of transgender and confusing sexual stories will become commonplace in California's schools. As farfetched and extreme as it may sound, our children will soon be dealing with other sexually confused children in their classrooms.

But we can help protect the innocence of our children by repealing SB 777. This will ensure that parents have local control over these controversial issues-not out-of-touch politicians in Sacramento.

1. "Gay Pride Week" Boston Dyke March: Parade of obscenity and weirdness through downtown streets. See photos & video!

It was "Gay Pride Week" in Massachusetts earlier this month. If you were smart, you left the state. In our last email we reported on the gruesome Transgender Pride Parade in Northampton, where "transgender" women who had cut off their breasts to look like men marched shirtless (we're not kidding).

That was just the beginning. On Friday, May 13, the profane "Boston Dyke March" took over the Boston Common and streets of the downtown area.

The first thing that comes to mind is that normal people wouldn't do this. This is the homosexual movement in its raw form - people who are clearly stalled in their emotional development. And these are the same people pushing the agenda in schools, businesses, and government.

It was a loud display of obscene chants, people carrying profane and sexual signs, public in-your-face homosexual embracing, and a lot of scary weirdness. Anyone in the downtown area, including tourists with their children, was confronted with this assault.

And not surprisingly, none of this was reported in any of the mainstream Boston area newspapers, TV stations, radio, or other media.

And we're going to keep the pressure up to keep it dead. But we can't rest for a second.

However, I submit that overly simplistic broad denunciations of “Feminists” in general – without even basic distinction between the types of “Equity Feminism” proposed by authors like Christina Hoff Sommers (Who Stole Feminism / War Against Boys) and the Separatist / Neo Exterminationist Pogroms promoted by the Dykes (Hyper Militant Misandrists) in author Jess Wells’ book (Lesbians Raising Sons) – do a disservice to the Men’s Rights Issues Forum, and are often the spoiled product of Red Herring Phisherfolk – sometimes known as the “Resident Harpies” of the Net.

Indeed, some of the most truly Vicious Misandrists I know of are Self Loathing Male Feminists – such as Weimar Kalifornia’s former Attorney General (now democrat treasurer of a bankrupt state) Bill ‘Wild Bull’ Lockyer. Wild Bull is on public record as supporting Homo-Anal Prison Rape (for Men Only of course – as said to cheers at his Radical Gender Feminist / democrat fundraisers) as part of his political gender platform, even to the point of expressing his fondest desire to “personally escort” one particular Male target “to an 8x12 prison cell he could share with a tattooed guy who would say: ‘Hi, My Name is Spike, Honey’”.

However, when it comes to sheer Hatred and Debasement of Men, Dyke Hatemongers still march second to none – and are fanatically Led by Separatist / Neo-Exterminationist Misandrists who truly desire the creation of a “World Devoid of Men” – BAMN, By Any Means Necessary. Further, they are not adverse to taking on ‘fellow travelers’ to the Long Dyke March – so long as the goals of Misandry are served by their presence.

Some want to claim that Solanas is old news, despite hyr continuing cult hyro status; to them I would point out that hyr “works” are still being performed by admirers well in to the 21st Century, at least in my ever ‘tolerant’ home town of Sodom by the Sea. The term Fa.g.g.o.t or F.a.g itself is quite curious in its lineage, having achieved popularity in the English Public (meaning very private) Schools, during the Victorian Peak of rampant Homosex Abuse / Ephebophilia (Boy Rape) that came to characterize life at so many of them. However, when it comes to sheer perverse self contradicting Orwellian Doublethink, the 'Frisco Crock-a-bull' / SF Chrohicle remains a leader in Oxymoronic Mau Mauing; even when it is their resident token 'conservative' columnist ostensibly criticizing the Pimp Kulture of San Francisco - now better known as Sodom by the Sea.

The above headline (from the Dead Tree / print edition of the Crock - which was watered down for the copy posted on their website for the masses) by columnist Debra Saunders is particularly interesting, in a rather morbid manner, if only because of its Omissions and Contradictions with other articles published in the Crock promoting Homosex Pederasty / Ephebophilia - and particularly their ongoing love affair with Homo-Anal Boy Rapist / nambla 'dignitary' Allen Ginsberg; to whom they regularly pay homage as a 'gay beat poet' - without mentioning inconvenient facts about his Leadership of the Homosex Boy Rapist caucus.

The column is based on a proposed Frisco ballot measure titled "Enforcement of Laws Related to Prostitution and Sex Workers," that would ostensibly "reduce institionaly violence and discrimination against prostitutes" - but which opponents claim would "shield child prostitution and traffikers in human beings"... And Saundrs says: "...the San Francisco ballot measure completely ignores the prostitution of children. The measure simply states, "Law enforcement agencies shall not allocate any resources for the investigation and prosecution of prostitutes for prostitution." Saunders goes on to observe: "Astonishingly, there's no exemption that encourages police to enforce the law for minors.
If the measure passes, the city is likely to become an international haven for pimps who peddle girls and boys, and perverts seeking sex with minors."

The other big problem: The measure prohibits city law enforcement from applying for grants to prosecute human traffickers. That's right, this measure gives a free pass to the human sex-slave trade - in a city that is a central stop for international sex-trade rings. A proponent of the measure told Fox News that she believes that it will pass with 75 percent of the vote because the city is "sex-positive."

However, having made brief reference to sexual abuse of Boys and "perverts seeking sex with minors" - Saunders changes tack and goes back to banging the Radical Gender Feminist Drums of Rage against Men by focusing on Womyn as Victims, while conveniently dropping references to Boys as Victims of Homosex Males: "The measure takes a tone that suggests it will protect women... by men who like to demean women and girls... Young women wooed into the life quickly age... They find they are disposable."

As a Member of Weimar Amerika's Despised and Disposable Male Minority (shorter lifespan / electoral minority, gretest workplace fatality rate, military consciption fodder...) I can certainly relate to the label of "Disposable" - even if it would never be allowed use in reference to Men by the Censors at the Crock. But one only need look at other articles in the Same Paper - Advertising for "Chicken" (aka -"Rent Boys" for Male Homosex Ephebophile "Chicken Hawks") to see the double standard of Misandry at work:

Politically correct feminists want Valentine's Day to become V-Day [link], standing for [bleep], Violence (committed by men against women) and Victory. Rather than taking 24 hours to celebrate romantic love, women are admonished to ponder rape and domestic violence.

Since 1998, V-Day events have been sponsored on university campuses across America. The stated purpose is to raise awareness. In reality, V-Day embodies the same double standard and dishonesty that has characterized most feminist pronouncements for decades.

Consider the politically correct centerpiece of the V-Day events: The [bleep] Monologues, the award-winning play by radical feminist Eve Ensler that features women who literally represent [bleep]s that speak out in a series of monologues.

The play is meant to decry rape and other violence against women. Yet, the original performances of the play and the published book eulogize the lesbian "rape" of a 13-year-old girl by a 24-year-old woman who plies her with alcohol. The pedophile section is entitled "The Little Coochi Snorcher That Could" - Coochi Snorcher being the nickname of the little girl's genitalia. Her [bleep]'s tale of seduction begins, "She gently and slowly lays me out on the bed ..."

After becoming more graphic, the little girl gratefully concludes, "I'll never need to rely on a man." Both by statute and by feminist definition, the "seduction" scene is rape. Nevertheless, the Coochi Snorcher declares, "... if it was rape, it was a good rape."

Such idealization of child molestation would have created a firestorm of outrage if the offending character had been male. But the molester was female, so The [bleep] Monologues won an OBIE Award on Broadway and noted actresses clamored to be included in the cast. When The New York Times reported the buzz about Ensler, it called her "the Messiah heralding the second wave of feminism."

However, audiences probably won't hear the Coochi Snorcher speaking of "good rape" in the 2002 performances. In past years, some sections of The [bleep] Monologues have caused embarrassment to the organizers and university officials who have backed V-Day performances. The script has been changed.

One of the alterations: The 13-year-old [bleep] omits the more inflammatory passages.

The 2001 http://www.feminist.com site, which coordinated performances, was emphatic that performances for anti-violence/campus events adhere to the new script. It stated: "You must use the version ... that is included in the Performance Kit that you will receive. No other version of the play is acceptable for your production. Do not use the book of the play or versions of the script from previous College Initiatives."

The site warned, "If you go forward with a production WITHOUT permission, you could be subject to legal proceedings." Thus, the original words of the play were suppressed.

Ensler explained the differences in the play between one year to the next by calling The [bleep] Monologues an "ever-evolving work." But the sections dropped were ones that had drawn protest. And the imposition of rigid control does not suggest a fluid, evolving process. Ensler will neither stand by her original words nor admit to having made a political error in her ever so politically correct play.

In 2000, when Georgetown University's Women's Center sponsored a performance of The [bleep] Monologues, the conservative Robert Swope - a regular contributor to Georgetown University's student paper, The Hoya - brought the Coochi Snorcher to national attention.

In the paper, Swope wrote, "why is rape only wrong when a man commits it, but when it's by a woman committed against another woman, who just happens to be 13-years-old, it is celebrated and a university club sponsors it?"

Swope was abruptly fired [link] from The Hoya. Accounts of his dismissal appeared in The Wall Street Journal, Salon, National Review, The Washington Times, and The Weekly Standard, among others.

There is nothing wrong with literature that honestly explores every aspect of the human body or sexuality. In 1970, the anthology Our Bodies, Ourselves became a well-deserved blockbuster precisely because it candidly addressed women's health concerns and sexuality. But no honesty is expressed by feminists who demand the "right" to speak on sensitive matters while fighting like mad dogs to shut down speech they find offensive on the same subjects.

A play that claims to unveil the truth about [bleep]s but, somehow, overlooks the salutary role men play in most women's sexuality has no credibility. Worse than this, The [bleep] Monologues equates men with "the enemy" and heterosexual love with violence.

Betty Dodson - a leader of '60s liberal feminism whose life's work has aimed at demystifying women's sexuality - expressed well-deserved horror at the play.

Describing Ensler as "an evangelical minister," Dodson believes that the play is a blast of hatred at men and heterosexuality. After all, the 24-year-old woman who seduces the drunken 13-year-old is portrayed as "rescuing" her from male violence.

"Take Back the Night" is a rallying cry that PC feminism raises against male violence. Perhaps the rallying call for Feb. 14 should be "Take Back the Day" - Valentine's Day - a cry that women who love the men in their lives should take up.

If the personal is to be political, then let's get political by celebrating a day of romance and of heterosexuality as a source of joy - as the source of life itself. THE London debut of ''Swetnam the Woman-Hater'' may not have been the biggest event of 1618, but it had lasting impact. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, this play introduced the word misogynist into the English language. The word caught on immediately, which makes sense, since there have always been men who have despised women. But there have always been women who have despised men. Why, then, wasn't it until 1946 that an equivalent word for hostility toward males appeared?

And why, once the word misandry surfaced (in ''Scrutiny,'' a defunct British journal of literary criticism), did it sink quickly into near oblivion?

''It's a word one almost never finds in literature,'' says Harold Bloom, the Sterling Professor of Humanities at Yale University and author most recently of ''Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human'' (Riverhead Books, 1998). ''It's not even much of a critical term.'' Yet once Mr. Bloom began thinking about it, he had no trouble coming up with examples of implicit, even explicit, misandry (not to be confused with misanthrophy, which means ''hatred of mankind''). ''I cannot think of one instance of misogyny,'' Professor Bloom said, referring to the works of Shakespeare, ''whereas I would argue that misandry is a strong element. Shakespeare makes perfectly clear that women in general have to marry down and that men are narcissistic and not to be trusted and so forth. On the whole, he gives us a darker vision of human males than human females.''

Of course, in literature as in real life, neither misogyny nor misandry has the upper hand for long. This makes all the more perplexing the fact that there's so clearly a winner in the battle of the language of sexism. Misogyny has made it into just about every dictionary of the English language. Misandry has not. It is true that the word is currently being seen, if not heard, more than ever, reflecting an escalation in the behavior it describes. Misandrous humor is now politically correct. Consider these recent book titles: ''Women Are From Venus, Men Are From Hell,'' ''All Men Are Jerks Until Proven Otherwise,'' ''Dads Say the Dumbest Things: A Collection of Fatherly Wit and Wisdom'' and ''Men and Other Reptiles.''

''When peoples' attitudes change,'' says Frank Abate, editor in chief of the U.S. Dictionaries Program for Oxford University Press, ''that changes the language.''
But even societal acceptance of misandrous, as opposed to misogynous, attitudes has not helped misandry catch up with misogyny in everyday parlance or in print. Misogyny needs no introduction; misandry appears accompanied by a parenthetical translation. The following sentence is from the National Organization for Men's Web site: ''The deleterious effect on men has been even further exacerbated by the emergence during these past decades of a misandry (male hatred) that characterizes men in general as violent, abusive and as historical oppressors.''

It seems that political correctness is not a critical determinant of which words get into dictionaries. ''You can't make the language do what you want it to do,'' Mr. Abate said in an interview. ''It does what it will do. Modern lexicography regards itself as recording and reporting much more than prescribing.''
Misandry has lacked the necessary word of mouth. Perhaps it's simply too much of a mouthful. But, as Harold Bloom points out, the same could be said of misogyny, ''an absolutely ghastly word,'' he said. Misogyny, however, has a buzz that has somehow eluded misandry. ''A word is used in a literary context,'' Mr. Abate said, ''or on TV, in a song, an advertising piece, it could be anything -- it gets picked up, people hear it and read it and say it -- and then it sticks. Or it doesn't stick.''

Even in 1618, buzz could make a word happen. ''Swetnam the Woman-Hater,'' whose author remains unknown to this day, is a case in point. Its main character, Misogenos, was based on one Joseph Swetnam, who had published a pamphlet trashing the female sex, which caused considerable debate. Dissenting pamphlets included one titled ''Ester Hath Hang'd Haman'' by Ester Sowernam, who wanted ''to proue, that . . . if there be any offense in woman, men were the beginners.'' So what launched misogyny was not merely the word; it was the play, and, beyond the play itself, the fact that it got people talking.

Bobbit Job Market

Speaking of MISANDRY in the Workplace - When I was the Supervisor for Operations and Facilities (and sole Male in Management at the time) at 'Paula Le Duc Catering' (the top Womyn Owned / Run Caterer in the SF Bay Area - which feeds Democrap Machine Presidents like slick Willie and Potentates like CHINO Nancy Pelosi) - MISANDRY in the form of Denigration, Discrimination and outright Harassment of Male Employees was simply standard operation practice.

For a while the head chef was a deeply twysted Hyper Militant Dyke Misandrist (a bitter divorcee with a young son) who used her boy as a club to bash other men at work - often by comparing his infantile exploration of his body in the bath tub with the behaviors of grown men. Of course she also used to fantasize aloud about cutting off her ex-husband's penis with a rusty knife, along with other endearing traits of the Dyke Separatist Coven. She even posted Posed Pictures of her son and Another Boy bent over naked (exposing their anus) - on Her Bulletin Board at Work, to the delight of several Homo-Anal Male employees - and the Disgust of the rest of us.

However - even the allegedly 'heterosexual' Womyn at the company enjoyed the atmosphere of Misandry that pervaded the workplace...

My 'favorite' company management meeting took place (after the company had just received the award for "Best Caterer" in the Frisco Bay Area) in preparation for an upcoming event in which needed Cigars and Cigar Cutters. When a bag of cigar cutters were dumped in front of the group of Womyn who ran the Company - they picked them up and started to make Penis Amputation Jokes - each vying with the others to see who could be the most hilariously graphic.

It all started 'innocently' enough (this was during the Clinton / Lewinsky scandal) with the observation that if Hitlary were to use a Cigar Cutter to give Slick Willie a 'Bobbit Job' (summary amputation of offending appendage) that the impeachment problem would go away. This led to further speculation as to who else (Clients and other Males) would benefit from a judicious snip of the tip...

My subsequent written complaints (I was the only Male in the Meeting) were ignored, and I was later sacked in retaliation for daring to object to these type behaviors, and for suggesting that employees (Males particularly) should be told if the 'wedding' they were being offered a dispatch to was a Dyke Affair - Given the Rank Raw Hatred of Men that Characterizes such events... Just given the Information - so they could exercise their 'Freedom of Choice' whether to work that job and put up with the harassment it entailed, nothing more.

Anywayyy... The 'legal' system was stacked against me and waited til literally the last moment to act - but eventually the CA Dept. of Fair Employment got a settlement against Paula Le Duc Catering that Required Discrimination Against Male Employees to be part of their 'harassment training' - although I wasn't around to take part by then.

Still - the job itself was a fascinating look in to the Ugly Nightmare World of the Uber-Wealthy Upper Crust of Pond Scum running the political indoctrination camp of Sodom by the Sea and the Left Coast Democrap Machine...

- And I always showered with lots of hot water and soap after 'interfacing' with such self avowed 'glitterati' of the moneyed Democrap Elite...

Lesbian Separatism - Women, wimmin, womyn, womin, whippets

This article is a response to the increasing sense of disquiet I've been experiencing about some ideas and attitudes around the feminist ghetto. I am concerned about the implications of a whole series of things I've heard or seen written such as: 'men are mutants'; 'its know use putting energy into men'; 'can heterosexual women be feminists'; 'porn is violence against women'; 'smash the sex shops'; 'castrate all rapists'; 'dead men don't rape'; 'kill them in their cots'; etc. Was there any relationship between these ideas? What could I read to explain to me the analysis behind them?

The crunch came when I woke up one morning to hear Fred Nile of the Festival Of Light praising the actions of Brisbane Uni feminists which lead to the removal of girlie magazines from the university newsagent. Fred was calling for community response to the "nauseating filth" of Caligula. Soon after some women are alleged by police to have thrown paint at the screen during a session. A remembered my misgivings over the tone and ideas behind the Reclaim The Night marches which focused on sex shops. What exactly is the difference between the Festival of Light's position and ours? Fred Nile says Caligula degrades women too. Do we advocate censorship? Can we afford ambiguity at a public level?

I decided to write an article to spell out my misgivings and to invite people to respond. I have talked to lots of people and done some scattered reading. My aim is to initiate written and open debate of ideas, not to have a go at any one.

This article has become an examination of "Lesbian Separatism" because it was to that spectrum of ideas that I traced many of the tendencies I find so unpalatable.

Why Be A Feminist?

Why be an anarchist? Why incorporate a body of ideas into the way you view the world? Political analysis gives us insight into our experiences and puts them into a context by helping us to understand the way the world works and its effects on us. Its aim is to help us work out tactics to change what we don't like.

I remember my first contact with women's movement ideas at Sydney University in c. 1972 sex role conditioning; women were not naturally inferior; monogamous, heterosexual marriage was not the only way. A little later I got involved with Gay Liberation ……it was alright to feel sexual feelings for your own sex!

What was the effect of these ideas? of this new found analysis? …..recognition, things clicking into place, relief, encouragement. It was liberating information. The world now seemed a bigger place, full of more choices. My brother's refusal to do any washing up because it would set a dangerous precedent, may have been a funny line, but it was unfair as I'd always felt. There were lots of women who were aroused by their own sex - whats more, the numbers appeared to be increasing. . . . After "The Loudest Whisper" and the evasions of the school chaplain, this was news indeed!

I had similar mind expanding sensation when I was first introduced to anarchist ideas. Alexander Berkman's indictment of state violence and Emma Goldman's criticism of the way the Russian Revolution developed were good news to this left-winger who had always felt uneasy with the concept of the dictatorship of the proletariat. To hear of a form of organization that didn't involve leaders or hierarchies or forced obedience to party lines of any colour, offered an ideal worth fighting for.

When I started to think about why I found the "lesbian separatist" ideas floating around town so unpalatable, I realized it was more than the absurdity of the mutant theory, more than the prejudice and authoritarianism of dismissing half the human race, more than the reverse sexism it was the hopelessness such ideas engendered.

These ideas have the exact opposite effect to the original women's liberation concepts. They are restricting. confining, inward turning and exclusive, not only of men, but of many women too. If you believe men are incapable of change, the future is indeed frightening.

The tactics such an analysis gives rise to reflect this hopeless quality - from no support to issues involving men, no involvement with male children, mistrust of heterosexual women; through to castration and death lists.

What Is Lesbian Separatism?

It would seem that "lesbian separatism" is a broad term meaning different things to different people. Women I spoke to in Sydney ranged in their interpretations from "not wanting to put energy into men", to consideration of ways to eliminate men all together. In Britain the lines have been more clearly drawn. Ludo McFingers gives a succinct description of the development of separatist threads up to 1978 in London in her article "The Way of All Separatists" in the Blatant Lesbianism. She writes how urban separatists squatting in London in the early 70's eventually moved into the country and became isolated and politically impotent. She writes "separatism as the extreme wing of radical feminism has been superceded by the revolutionary feminists, who call for the struggle to be taken back into the streets . . . They hate men, see women as a sex class, support biological determinism, reject reformism and despise the left."(1)

Here are all the ideas I associate with the term "lesbian separatist". I understand there are some women who call themselves "separatist" who may only agree with parts of the whole spectrum.

1. Patriarchy.

Separatists assert that patriarchy is the fundamental cause of all oppression in our society. It is the sum total of means by which men maintain dominance over women. In a patriarchal analysis men are identified as the enemy and the creators of all other divisions and inequalities throughout history. "Women's oppression predates and is the root cause of all others."( 2) I get the impression that all men, each individual man, benefits and thus all men are responsible. All men are considered guilty and all women are considered innocent.

A Sydney woman I interviewed felt that there had been two camps from the word go - socialist feminists, who see economic causes as the root of our oppression, and radical feminists, who see patriarchy as the cause. She said "Women have never had any power and have always been ruled by men. Out of that comes class, race and economic divisions. Women have no say and have always been oppressed in some way."

As a British woman puts it "I know what it is and who it is that oppresses me most, each time I walk outside my front door. Its not capitalism, its not class structure, its not other women, its men . . . No woman is to blame because none of us had the power to create these structures."( 3)

"Lesbian separatism" is asserting that sex/gender is the basic division in our society. All other inequalities are subordinate side-effects. Faced with a complex world, such a suggestion may be appealing in its simplicity. It invites direct and radical solutions. But it just isn't that simple. Class and race are equally significant. To fully understand a society we need to work out the relationship between sex, class and race based divisions, and to consider them in the context of the particular culture and historical period.

Any movement for social change which chooses to focus on one basis of oppression and to downgrade the significance of the others, is bound to be misleading and oppressive itself.

The impact of feminism this century has been to point out to working class based movements their failure to fully acknowledge the significance and to fight to remove sex based oppression. Separatist ideas appear to have swung the other way. It is easier to see the man whistling from the car than it is to see class structure. But I am often aware when I walk out my front door of the advantages I experience as a middle class white in Australia. Socio-economic background and racial origin, as well as gender, fundamentally influence the educational opportunities, work options and life expectations of women and men.

I can only attempt to understand the problems of a black woman struggling to help free her people from white, imperialist domination and to create a new more equal society - whether its in Australia or South Africa. I wouldn't presume to tell her what her priorities should be. But it is clear that the maintenance of her peoples' culture and identity, and the opportunity for economic independence, are necessary for her full liberation as a woman.

There is a thread running through "Lesbian separatist" thought that attempts to absolve women from any responsibility for the way the world is, "No woman is to blame because none of us had the power to create these structures." This view of history delegates women to a politically passive and impotent role. It reveals how misleading an analysis is which ignores other significant factors. Female members of ruling elites or dominant races have influenced and actively participated in the economic lives of societies.

For some "separatists" involvement in groups who are active around issues which are not specifically related to women, is at best a waste of time, and at worst collusion with the enemy.

This attitude can lead "separatist" women to exclude themselves from participation in struggles or around causes in which men are active. Thus the opportunity to become aware of common problems or the way other people see things is lost. Many of my political ideas and attitudes to people have been moulded through active participation. Separatist ideas would seem to lead inevitably to a narrowing of outlook and to facilitate the maintenance of pure and rigid views.

2. Men, Violence and Rape.

"Separatists" have an intense interest and make repeated references to violence by men against women. Separatist ideas in Sydney are associated with the feminist refuge movement and rape crisis, where women are constantly confronted by the ugliest side of male/female relationships in our community. It is argued that men use the threat of violence and particularly rape to keep their power over women. "All men benefit from the sex class system based on men's power over women, whether or not they all rape, murder, mutilate and attack women."( 4)

It is argued that each individual man must be held responsible "We suffer from male exceptions. It is too frightening for women to start seeing 'their' men as the enemy - the woman- batterer-mutilator-disemboweling-murderer, so it is more comfortable to believe that these men are 'just a few maniacs"'.( 5)

Two Sydney women I interviewed had a very vivid sense of imminent threat from men "We are living in a state of civil war. In no society for over 5000 years have women had freedom to move."

It is felt that male violence towards women needs to be talked about and recorded. As Pam Stein wrote in last issue of Girls Own "This is what we should have been talking about at the conference - how men are raping, beating and murdering women all over the world - and how we as black, white or green women should be eliminating our murderers."

Rape is seen as the ultimate weapon men use. Susan Brownmiller in Against Our Will; Men, Women and RAPE sums up this view I think, "From prehistoric times to the present, I believe, rape has played a critical function. It is nothing more or less than a conscious process of intimidation by which all men keep all women in a state of fear."

Several of the women I interviewed suggested to me that men had in fact been trying to kill women for centuries, but had held back because of women's role in giving birth, Current experiments by scientists with test-tube babies, genetic engineering and cloning concerned these women as attempts to eradicate the necessity for women at all.

Emphasis on the responsibility of individual men for the communal male crimes of patriarchy implies the possibility of punishment or revenge. I am drawn to an approach which does not focus on the individual but rather on the forces that shape peoples' lives. I don't support locking people in jails or capital punishment as a response to violent behaviour. I do support attempts to deal with the causes, such as social inequality, deprivation, unemployment and alcoholism.

I do think that violence by men towards women does have special characteristics, but I don't think that it can be divorced from the general violence of all types within our society. Women as well as men support state violence from police, prison officers, the army and teachers in schools. Violence by the state far exceeds the acts of any individuals.

3. Men Will Not Change.

The underlying premise of "lesbian separatism" is that men cannot or will not change. Any attempts in that area we seen as a waste of time.

4. Men As "The Other".

The general feeling I get talking to separatists is that men are seen as quite different from women. This perception of men as alien to women is reflected in their choice of language. Despite seeing class and race based divisions in our society as plots by me to divide women, they use these terms to reinforce their sense of difference from men. An example is Pam's disturbing assertion in the last Girls Own,"I am racist to the extent that I believe there are two races - women and men, and I hate the men who are trying to destroy our race". And a British example, "I see a sex-class system where men are the oppressor class (enemy). Women are a class and there is a class war between men and women."( 6)

Two women I spoke to felt that social conditioning processes and vested interest in the current system may not be enough to explain what they believe is men's unwillingness or refusal to change. It is in this context that the suggestion of biological determinism emerges. As I understand it the idea was first floated by Valerie Solanas in The SCUM Manifesto (Society for Cutting Up Men) in 1968.

The suggestion appears to be that while women have XX chromosomes men have lost a bit and are XY. Thus they have mutated and are essentially different to women. As one woman put it to me, the mutation theory was "a bit of a joke but it seemed pretty logical. Women go through masses of startling changes all the time, why can't they?"

No-one I talked to was prepared to say they definitely agreed with biological determinism.

However I gather it is quote common in some circles to hear men referred to as "mutants". To coin derogatory names for groups of people we fear or despise is a common practice in our society. It enables the user of such terms to feel different from the object of these feelings, But do women who call men "mutants" actually see biological determinism as a fact? If so what are the tactical implications of such a belief? As Ludo comments in her article, about the British situation, "Revolutionary feminism emerged ... at times embarrassed about some of the potentially fascist overtones of biological determinism . . . "

Several women told me of "jokes" they had heard around the ghetto about killing boy babies in their cots, the assumption apparently being that they were doomed from birth. This is an implied reference to biological determinism. Such "jokes" alienate other women and seem alarmingly without hope. It also seems a bit disturbed to me.

5. "Not Putting Energy Into Men".

For some women "separatism" involves being "woman-identified" - "separatism" has always been defined in Australia by negative outsiders as separation from men. I see it from a positive side. All my emotions, love and work are with women." Another woman said, "Separatism is about making decisions on where you put your energy, making decisions about tactics for social change - not about killing babies. Its continual choices."

Another woman said that men had always sold women out in political struggles and could not be trusted, "I can't envisage any revolutionary situation that is going to give women freedom. No vision is worth fighting for while men are involved." From Britain, "It really frightens me when I hear women talking about changing men by working with them against capitalism". (7)

Thus for many women "lesbian separatism" involves excluding men from your social life and working politically with women-only for women-only. This, therefore, discourages or precludes involvement with trade unions and mixed left wing groups.

Some women talk about the possible need for violent confrontation with men to overthrow their power. For a few it has involved consideration of killing men in large numbers. I feel that this idea or fantasy has arisen from feelings of isolation connected with a ghetto lifestyle, a preoccupation with men's violence towards women, impatience for change and the fear that merely separating off will not be enough to force it. It relies on an analysis which identifies men as the cause of all the worlds problems. This ultimate solution is linked to biological determinism which asserts that men are incapable of change.

What does one say about such ideas? It is so disturbing to see such authoritarian madness emerging in a context that purports to be part of feminist or women's liberationist thought.

Two women I spoke to wanted a world without men and had contemplated killing them - but they feared women would not survive a direct confrontation. They also had reservations because a lot of women wouldn't want it. One woman said, "If I want to exterminate them all, do I want to kill my father? I'd find it hard. One reason is I've had good times with him." Both these women didn't like the idea of killing anyone themselves.

An Irish woman writes, "the idea of killing and/or physically challenging male hatred of women is paralyzingly scary … I find it much easier to contemplate the idea of implanting all men with haemophilia or something . . . the process of violence could so brutalize women that we might use our power against each other . . . I think that having lived in Ireland, I'm very wary of traditional revolutionary tactics like bombing, kneecapping and the like and so I'm continually aware of the yawning gulf between theory and practice that seems to pervade my thinking."( 8)

6. Fantasy Versus Concrete Political Strategy.

Tension exists in "lesbian separatist" ideas between fantasy and concrete analysis and strategy. The two at times merge in a way I find confusing. Perhaps I just find it hard to understand how someone could be serious about some of this stuff. I was told of the need to exercise my "female imagination". At times it seemed a case of either you feel it or you don't.

"The release of a fantasy world of imagining living in a world without men keeps me going from day to day ... the fantasy of living in a world without fear."( 9) The woman who said this to me was very unwilling to discuss how the men would be removed and where to - yet it seemed a point that needed to be cleared up. Another woman said, "Maleness and death are linked. Men have killed in actual and subtle ways . . . Death may even be a patriarchal myth. Men are so linked with death they may have killed our life spark. We have to rely on fantasy because it hasn't happened before, for example, women's culture. If you have a fantasy there is a possibility it could happen."

It was suggested to me that the female principle is life giving, whereas the male is linked to death. This idea was promoted in bold type on the back cover of the last Girls Own,"War is the assertion of death over life; of the patriarchy over the female principle." The style and use of language and capital letters on that page were reminiscent of literature from a religious sect.

There are spiritual ideas sometimes associated with "lesbian separatism" which involve a vision of the creative potential of a female culture and future.

7. Lesbianism As A Political Issue.

In 1976 a number of women in Melbourne distributed a long essay entitled Women's Liberation; The Problems and The Potential. Part of their comments on "separatism" were, "It can be argued that developing a separatist women-only group and/or lifestyle based on counter- cultural values will only intensify the conflicts between women in this society, and perpetuate the myth that lesbianism is the ultimate feminism or the ultimate personal solution for all women . . . No-one questions the right of any woman to live how, where and with whom she pleases, but what is being questioned here is the right of any woman to put forward a particular lifestyle or type of relationship and say that this is what real feminists should be doing or that this is the best/only strategy for achieving women's liberation."( 10)

I associate the idea that lesbianism is the "ultimate feminism" with "lesbian separatism". For some women the slogan has changed from "Every woman can be a lesbian" to "Every woman should be a lesbian." A British view, "We should refuse to be [bleep] by men. We should be celibate or lesbian . . . For me fighting patriarchy is primary and the all pervasive ideology of heterosexuality is one of the biggest weapons men have." (11) Another British woman, "I do think that heterosexual women collaborate in their own and other women's oppression."( 12)

From Blatant Lesbianism, "You want all women to be lesbian? Well, obviously yes .... You reach a political position, one that you believe to be the best and that offers the ultimate solutions." (13) And later in the same Sydney magazine, ". . . its the idea of lesbianism being a conscious political choice, giving up heterosexual protection and privilege and committing our primary energies - emotional intellectual and sexual - to other women as the most effective means of undermining the male-dominated system that oppresses all women - its this idea that is challenging and therefore threatening."( 14)

As a feminist and a lesbian I have never felt comfortable with this line on lesbianism. It doesn't ring true with my experience of how and why women become lesbians, and it doesn't appear to give enough significance to sexual arousal and desire the feelings that lead so many women into bed together despite the enormous discouraging messages society puts out.

The general attitude that lesbianism is the more acceptable sexual preference is pervasive around the feminist ghetto. As a short term response to years of external and internalized oppression for being a lesbian, the desire for all women to be lesbians, and hatred of men, is understandable. When the lid was finally lifted off all my resentments and bottled up guilt and fear, the rush was overwhelming. But to justify such feelings in quasi political terms is to promote a new set of oppressive and restrictive attitudes.

I was attracted by Gay Liberation and Women's liberation because they freed me from a sexual norm, a "right way to [bleep]". That women should feel group pressure to conform to a new norm, or feel excluded or mistrusted because they [bleep] with men, seems an ironic parody of our original intent. Such an approach appears to disregard the many elements that influence the intangible area of sexual arousal.

Also it was suggested to me that lesbianism as a political issue has not been taken up by the women's movement in the same way as abortion, equal pay etc. It is said that feminists fear losing credibility by giving the impression that we're all a bunch of lesbians. I think that in the early 70's this anxiety did exist, but that things have changed dramatically since then. These days I think it is heterosexual women who often feel one out at a feminist gathering and unable to discuss any problems or pleasures they may be experiencing in their sexual relationships.

I think that lesbianism as an issue has been fully integrated into the women's movement. Perhaps the social and other supports the movement provides for lesbians explains to some extent the recent lack of outward action in the community. Ironically many separatist women appear to have boycotted recent gay marches and demonstrations - because men are involved.

The last comment in this part is that I don't like the use of the word "heterosexism". This word is used to describe the conditioned patterns of behaviour in sexual relationships which represent the norm in society - heterosexual, monogamous marriage - involving characteristics such as a dominant and a submissive role, jealousy, etc. The term "heterosexism" implies a necessary link between these conditioned patterns and heterosexuality. Clearly these patterns emerge in lesbian and homosexual relationships. It is the patterns some of us want to change. I'm sure we just used to call it plain old "sexism".

As the Melbourne women say, "It has become apparent that many relationships between women have taken downright reactionary and oppressive forms, simply because, at this stage, all the [bleep] that's in the system about roles and sexuality and power, manifests itself in many of the same sorts of ways as it does in heterosexual relationships."( 15)

Attitudes Associated with "Lesbian Separatism"

It is not just the influence of "Lesbian Separatist" ideas. There is a body of attitudes I associate with these ideas, which are hard to define simply because they are never directly stated.

1. There is an exclusive club mentality. An attitude exists which is prescriptive and judgemental. It is a trap easy to fall into in politics. The idea is promoted that there is a "correct line", a one true way. A group of knowers with the truth. It is a world of black and white absolutes. There is an implied denial of other women's outlook and experience. There seems little room for diversity.

The Melbourne women had some comments about what has happened to the original women's liberation concept "the personal is political".

"The Personal Is Political does not mean that every single action or word is dripping with heavy political significance and that therefore one must never act unless one has carefully worked out whether it is 'feminist' or not. Quite clearly this leads to a tyrannical situation where women are unable to be themselves (one of the key aims of Women's Liberation) ..... Instead of the slogan being a liberating insight ..... it has become an oppressive idea preventing thought, action and initiative (particularly since no area of personal life was able to be one's own anymore). "(16)

Is feminism to be a liberating body of ideas whose general thrust is to understand our society through opening things up for discussion and debate? Or a new set of rules to be used to identify and label the ideologically unsound? Surely the aim is to open new avenues, not to make further restrictions.

2. There is a general lack of detailed theoretical debate and open non-defensive discussion of these ideas. There is a need to express exactly what is meant and why and to follow through the implications of these ideas. "Separatist" positions often appear in black and white terms as water-tight theories where any deviation threatens the structure. One woman I spoke to likened this style to advertising. It is aimed at the emotions not the intellect.

3. There is an uncritical attitude towards power for women. I remember posters at a Lesbian- Feminist conference several years ago depicting three linked women's symbols and the word "POWER" underneath. Power for whom? Over whom? To do what? Blatant Lesbianism contained four different photographs of women holding guns. Why?

4. One woman pointed out to me that the patriarchal analysis lacks a true historical perspective. Five thousand years of oppression for women is often spoken of. It has a timeless, overpowering effect. Patriarchy looms gigantic, non-developmental and crushing. Women appear as passive victims. Another woman felt this view of our past only reinforces a masochistic and fearful attitude in women. "What about the women who resisted, fought back, or did other things?"

Such a view of history denies cultural differences and historical context. Historical perspective is essential for anyone interested in social change. You need a sense of yourself as part of a tradition of dissent and agitation in order to develop a realistic set of expectations.

I think that "Lesbian Separatist" ideas and attitudes have grown from an oversimplified analysis and an underestimation of what had to change. It is as if women's liberation began in 1968 and they are impatient because it hasn't happened yet. I can remember walking around uni in the early 70's talking about "the revolution" as if it were a big bang which would blow in the next few years. Now I see political struggle as a daily affair, a series of actions and reactions, advances and setbacks. The ends do not justify the means. The means we employ to achieve social change are the revolution.

Contrary to the atmosphere surrounding "Separatist" ideas, I feel that women's struggle has come a long way this century, and so has the situation for lesbians and homosexuals. We are now in a period of reaction when the gains of the last ten years are under attack. Historically movements for social change cope with internal differences while the movement is gaining ground and is on the offensive. Internal divisions and debate act as catalysts for change and advance. When the reaction sets in and we are defending our gains, we must be aware of the tendency for movements to turn in on themselves and to self-destruct. I suggest that "Separatist" ideas tend to limit the scope of political involvement for women by defining ever more strictly where feminists can put their energy. They create false divisions e.g. between lesbian and heterosexual women. Also these ideas and associated attitudes alienate women looking at feminism for the first time.

5. Some "Separatists" feel isolated and persecuted. There is a sense of separation from left tradition, a tendency not to respect or seek to learn from past or current struggles where men are involved.

For example, many "separatists" have strong feelings about pornography. I have found some "separatists" all too ready to suggest pornography should be banned, without regard or even awareness of the struggle over censorship dating back many years.

Similarly with, what to do about rapists. Remarks such as "they should be shot" are easily made, but are women seriously arguing for the reintroduction of capital punishment? Do we want to lock more men up in jails? If so, what do we think it will achieve?

Conclusion

Women choosing to live their lives separate from men, whether in the city or the country, is their business. Seeing the patriarchy as the source of all oppression in the world, is one opinion. The problem comes in when the extension of these ideas leads to women feeling their credibility as feminists is suspect if they are heterosexual. And worse still, when they are reticent to admit that their children are males.

To have people feel restricted by a new "moral code" within a movement whose aim is liberation, is a problem in itself. But when ideas or slogans such as "Dead Men Don't Rape" begin to appear, the time has come to seriously look at the analysis which enables such an idea to be entertained. The implications of such a slogan are frightening. This is not the basis for a freer and more humane society.

Conflict

I don't think we debate ideas often or fully enough. We tend to live in splinter ghettoes of the big ghetto called the women's movement. If we want to mix with a group of women socially, we feel we need to agree with their ideas, or at least to keep quiet. Several women have suggested to me that by writing this article I'm opening myself up for character assassinations as a means of destroying the credibility of my opinions.

I hope this article will be greeted as an attempt to open up debate. Lets try to put principles before personalities. Such an approach is based on an assumption that there is no single list of true ways of interpreting the world, and no single list of tactics to change it.

I have heard that in Italy people can have heated political disagreements but still expect you to be their friend. The distinction is drawn between the person and their ideas. A. helpful approach. After all lots of us change our ideas pretty radically as time goes by.
