the NCS program gives the class of all players. So you can see some indications. Mostly the USUAL SUSPECTS.
.
.
..ALL 3 of the above need to replace a senior setter. SRV can tell you its not always easy.
.
.
.
GRANADA minus starters ...has an experienced squad with half dozen 10th graders. .
MONTE VISTA has big Cuneo returning and 5 other bench returners. >EBAL kids go club so they can fill spots readily.

I am picking San Ramon Valley, Acalanes, Athenian, and Heritage. Remember in "Top Gun" when Tom Cruise and his partner won one game and lost a game, and everyone wanted them to play a tiebreaker, but he wanted to go see Kelly McGillis? Remember when Tom Hanks got stranded on that desert island, and his best friend was Wilson?

Acalanes? really? they're losing 12 seniors, there were only 2 juniors on that team too, an amazing libero and average outside hitter. there JV was ok, not great, they do not have any height whatsoever though. i dont see acalanes being that strong of a team next year, but who knows ive been wrong before.

Watch out for SRV if they get consistant setting. They could use more athletes but Crow and Rei should both be all league next year.

I was referring to the 2007 team that won NCS. Matt Rices team. It was a BEAST of a team.

While I agree with you that San Ramon will be a strong team next year, I can't help but think that Foothill will once again take over the reigns of EBAL and NCS. Although they are being hit hard with the loss of Martinez and Hanan, their JV team would beat MOST Varsity teams in the area, they are huge, and their setter was actually pretty good. These players, in addition the current Varsity players that arent seniors, and then a stellar coach like Dusty Collins is going to be a force for sure.
I also think that Cal is going to have another solid squad, if they can get a setter. They lose Owoc, Crinnion, and the Libero but they still have 9 returning players including Adkins, Whitaker and Williams.

I heard once that they are starting to get players into Club ball. So anything is possible. Plus Washington nor Logan are likely to be that strong.

Well I know from EBAl that the team that takes the smallest hit in graduating seniors is SRV. Foothill, Amador, Monte Vista, and Granada all take huge hits in that area

I'll take the bet on Northgate. 5 returning starters 3 will be seniors (Libero, OH/OP and Middle) 2 will be juniors (setter and OH).
Replacing a player like Sigler always tough. Another good setter coming off JV to work into departing setter D. Baums spot. Other departing seniors were strong all around and really helped plug the holes. Work is still needed on some of the JV players coming up to create that same level of depth.
Theme continues, teams that cultivate and produce the quality setters rise to the top. Players like Nick K. don't come along that often and they can really take a team to the top levels. They take apart strong blocking teams and wreaked havoc on normally solid defenses.
That said, not sure on who has strong setters returning or moving up but I'd keep and eye out for those teams.
Congrats again to CP on a great season. Really fun to watch your rise to the top.
Anyone know the returning levels at Concord and Mt. Diablo?

according to the NCS program book, Concord loses everyone except a 6'5" middle,Zach Lamson. There rise was in part aided by two boys playing club. But they don't do club that much over there. They do have a capable coach but the cupboard looks bare. There JV ?.
Mt.D loses the prime talent they had: the brother @ middle, and Nguyen and Flores. And they have no JV. MtD probably won't be a factor next year. 2009 seems another CP/Northgate year it would seem. -------------------------- Look for Campo to rise. Saw them late and they were coming up. Big and young. They will likely send several to club. (But NGTE will not be in their league next time. right?) Can you believe 5 years ago Miramonte rolled a perfect season to the NCS title...and now they have not won 1 game in 2 years?

The EBAL title will almost = the Div-1 title next year as their are only 12 or 15 teams at that level. Deer Valley and CP probably the only outside competition.

I think the following league winners will be: EBAL-Foothill-took second this year, have great libero, good returning players and a strong JV to pick from. Plus, Dusty can teach anyone to play anywhere.
DFAL-Campo-from what I heard, strong last part of the season, plus, they seem to be the only strong team in DFAL next year
BVAL-Deer Valley-weak league should give this consistantly good team no trouble
New League (DVAL?)-Northgate-strong returning starters, plus they don't have to find a new setter. They were strong this year and will continue to be strong next year.

heritage will be the team to beat then deer valley. dont forget, we dont have de la salle in our league next year. im not shedding any tears on that and dv needs a setter real bad. heritage has 2 setters and 4 outside hitters with 1 middle returning. the jv team only had 2 loses and that was to de la salle. dv jvs sucked, heritage killed them in 2 games. lou has his work cut out for him. start a club with diablo because heritage is a club team from arugila

I havn't posted in a while, but.......You are joking, right! Thanks for the laugh. Deer Valley has not lost a league match in 2 years. while its true that they graduate setter, Mark and outside hitter Brawley, they have 5 starters returning (if you agree that with the libero teams now have 7 starters). Both middles are back as well as OH Wahidi and RSH Noor. This year Deer Valley started 3 freshmen, 1 sophomore, 2 juniors and 2 seniors. Maybe thats why the JV wasn't strong. Heritage will not be a winning team until they replace an incompetent coaching staff. League winners next year Deer Valley, Foothill, Northgate, Campo?, Logan NCS finals - Foothill vs Deer Valley or Northgate

As good as foothills JV is and how good of a coach they have in Dusty. I dont think they will win leauge. They are replacing Luke,Jayme, and Dillion. Based on what i saw, Foothill wont easily replace those guys, but hey it would suprise me if dusty worked his magic again .SRV, if they can get a decenet setter, will win leauge, They graduated 1 starter and will have more experiance this coming year.

EBAL- Foothill. If you saw their JV squad, you know what's up. San Ramon might give them a run if they find a setter.
Other league winners- Northgate and Deer Valley.

Marin schools can no longer beat up on schools with 350 kids (&~half are girls). Drake will have to deal with teams like Northgate and Campo in Div2 NCS.........
Head-Royce with the coach everyone loves to hate , had almost No seniors (except for a big middle). They will be near the top of DIV4. DeAnza goes to Div2 and returns several including a setter and a middle. LUKE ! DeAnza knows about the newcomer...El Molino of Sonoma County (Russian River),. The first year of mens volleyball and yjru finish 2nd in the Marin league. (their usual league does not have mens vball). "El Mo" as they call it... reached the NCS semis. And the team had virtually No seniors. But the kicker may be.....They are @ ~ 975 students. A few more and they would presumably have to play up to Div 2. Then in the stretch run have to face Northgate, Acalanes, Clayton Valley, Campo, etc. A small increase of student body may make a big difference.

Northgate has an amazingly strong squad coming back next year. The lineup will consist of: Seniors- Drew Sachwitz- L , Kevin Woods- MB, Dan Dunham-OH Juniors- Matt Cutaia- OH, Trevor Fast - Setter All 5 were starters on last years team. All 5 play club for Diablo. Not to mention their JV squad who were league champs for the 2nd year in a row. (9 of NG's players play club) They'll be the team to look out for.

Northgate is going to dominate the new division 2 scene. and also the new BVAL or whatever it is going to be called. they have by far the most experienced team coming into next year along with san ramon. unfortunately san ramon just doesn't have a standout setter and northgates needs to add a few inches to his height and he would be golden.
i really think if northgate stayed d1 they could make a run at the d1 title...come see me!

Northgate will be in the DVAL next season, along with College Park, Clayton Valley, Concord, Ygnacio Valley and Mt. Diablo. The BVAL will be just the teams in the East County - Deer Valley, Heritage, Liberty, Freedom, Pittsburg, & Antioch. The DFAL will be adding Dougherty Valley and will also consist of Alhambra, Dublin, Acalanes, Miramonte, Las Lomas & Campolindo. The EBAL will be adding De La Salle/Carondelet to form an 8 team league with the same existing EBAL schools.
College Park should give Northgate some competition in the DVAL next season.

DLS loses both outsides, the setter , libero and one of the three middles also their utility player. They will have to replace a middle, one outside plus a setter. They are supposed to get Jeff Powers from the basketball team as a middle next year and Luke Edwards younger brother as an incoming freshman. With Jake Stephans moving to the outside they should be competitive if they can get some kind of setting from someone. The JV team only lost a couple of matches last year so they may provide a few players who can help. Luke and Kyle Loo will both be hard to replace and the libero position is up for grabs. They will be in contention in the EBAL next year is my guess.

If Powers is going to play next year, then why didn't he play this year? He is a good athlete and could be a difference maker if he has some volleyball aptitude. He certainly looks like he would be a good pickup for them.

Powers played club before getting to DLS. Basketball players under Allocco are NOT encouraged to play other sports at DLS and certainly not a minor sport like volleyball. In the past players from the basketball team only played as upper classmen such as Schroeder and Niedermier. It is a shame that Powers has not played for the last three years. Hopefully the rumor is true and he makes it onto the court and maybe there are other players at DLS who will join him.

By NOT encouraged to play other sports, you mean encouraged NOT to play other sports. That's too bad. I guess Allocco can't do anything once his senior basketball season ends. I bet Powers is a heck of a middle blocker.

i play for dls and i can tell you that we're confident that jeff will join the team and be able to play middle fairly well. he was a good player before high school and has volleyball in his family (his sister played at cal, i think).
and i also don't think we'll be hurting as much as people think, but maybe i'm biased...

It sounds as if he has a lot more going for him than just height. He is tall, athletic, and has played the game for many years. If he does play next year, I'm betting he will be good. You'll find out when DLS comes to visit AV next year.
