See the TV report on how inadvertantly it has been noted that surgery on the first foot of the bowel (duodenum) ... has coincidently disappeared pre-existing diabetes. An immediate and complete disappearance of diabetes subsequent to gastric bypass surgery in morbidly obese individuals was also reported. The reporter stated this calls for a reexmination of the understanding of the pathology process in diabetes. As a diabetic....I find it an exciting development.

Being a type 2 diabetic, I too was intrigued by this but if you go to some of the discussions on the Yahoo Groups dealing with diabetes, there is some debate about the accuracy of some of the statistics presented in the show. I'm always a little leery of getting my hopes up based on something I see on one of these shows. Word to the wise: Always take anything you hear on Larry King Live or Oprah with a healthy grain of salt. The best thing to do is subscribe to a good reputable publication like "Diabetes Self Management" and talk to your endocrinologist who hopefully is up-to-date on the latest research.
