Raiders' Huff must shape up quickly. Posted June 21, 2009 @ 11:38 a.m. By PFW staff • Sources say Al Davis is willing to cut maligned Raiders S Michael Huff if he doesn’t show improvement in the near future. Huff, the team’s 2006 first-round pick (seventh overall), has been working at strong safety during OTAs and minicamps, and we hear he’s likely to be released if he doesn’t earn a starting spot. The 26-year-old has been a major disappointment and was demoted from the starting lineup to the bench midway through last season. He has yet to show signs of figuring things out this offseason.

• Word out of Oakland is Raiders fourth-round pick WR Louis Murphy impressed observers with his work ethic during the team’s OTAs and minicamps. Murphy stood out in a receiving corps in major need of a playmaker, while first-round choice WR Darrius Heyward-Bey spent much of his time on the sideline nursing a hamstring injury.

Personally i expect more from Murphy....He comes from the best and toughest conference....I assume he dad good numbers with Florida last year . It would be no suprise if he performs at a high level....He is better prepared than Hayward Bey... Better FOOTBALL SKILLS!!! Definetely.. Man...we need some one to step up at wide receivers position...Lets see if he materializes

Just for the fact that Murphy is a slot WR. the only reason we took him was because we needed a non injurie prone replacement for Ronald Curry. Murphy will be in on 3rd and long situations i`m sure. We will also be running the ball much more than passing. We have a lot of depth at Rb, we should use it. plus bush and mcfadden our excellent cathers out of the back field not to mention miller will more than likely get most of the looks.

He was a track star in high school and really only played 2 full seasons as a RW at florida, totaling 77 catches for 1,245 yards with 13 TDs (DHB had 138 catches for 2,089 yards with 13 TDs in 3 years).  He is known as a track guy with excellent straight line speed but, lacks the ability to make DBs miss, too small of a frame to beat press coverage and of all things, questionable hands.  And of course, needs loads of work with route running having played in a spread system.  In other words, he's a classic Davis speed pick.

Don't get me wrong here, I am excited about the early reports and love the work ethic as that bodes well for him and us.  I just don't know how you label Murphy as having better "FOOTBALL SKILLS" than DHB at this point.   They are very similar in some ways with exception of, DHB has a better frame, he's heavier, he's faster, more athletic, and has more experience.  I think Murphy could pull it off but, he is the 100% genuine AD prototypical pick the same as Bey.  I hope they both turn out well.

I actually think that rhaider1 is right in some cases. Because Percy Harvin was so athletic and one of the most dynamic players in college he pretty much stole the show from Murphy. I will have to say that Murphy has better hands than DHB and I would have to disagree about their sizes too. DHB is 6'2 210 while Murphy is 6'3 205 and both are going to get bigger. DHB has the verticle leap for sure, but I think both guys could end up being good. I think Murphy is a better pass catcher than DHB, but it remains to be seen in the NFL. Both come from similar backgrounds too, because both were run blocking most of the time and if they weren't doing that they were running 30+ yard post/flag routes. Everyone is going to have a different opinion about these guys, but I think Murphy could be more valuable than DHB based on leadership and work ethic. You heard about how hard DHB practiced at the combine, but haven't heard anything at all since.

As for Huff... Its about time! Put pressure on that guy and make him show us he can play or let him loose. I hope he can eventually prove himself and live up to his billing, but he better do it soon here on I will be happy to see us clear his cap number.

Well said, and I agree.  My only point was the 'football skills' we all wish Davis would add to his evaluation process.  The attributes I listed above were taken from side by side pre and post draft evaluations and I make no assertions as to their accuracy.  Their similarities you noted above speak to my point of both being classic AD picks.  I am stoked we have some young talented RW's to debate.  It's been a while.

And for the record, I meant no disrespect to Raider1, who usually has some great takes.

As far as Huffy goes, you put it perfectly too, but he is starting to look more and more like Derrek Gibson.  I think we'll cut him earlier than Gibson if he doesn't get it soon.  Thanks for the input.

Hey man, didn't mean to make it sound like I was attacking you sorry. Like you I'm just happy we have some guys to be talking about, I just hope its nothing like when we had Porter, Curry and Gabriel and a lot of us thought they would be good...... kinda blew up in our face. I do know where you're coming from as far as them being classic Davis picks.

I didn't take it that way but, I appreciate your courtesy (sorry for using that word here) and I always appreciate your input.  Yeah, I remember thinking we were loaded at RW and then 'poof' it was gone.  Moments to ruin...  At least we got a 5th rounder from NE out of Gabriel.  Of course, we picked Eric Frampton...  It looks promissing now though...

Thanks again, man.

just like the brand Huffy.

DHB is lazy, with brick hands. dump him too.

DEAR AL: cut ties with losers quickly vs. giving them 10 years to prove themselves. just move on. also, you should retire. you're too old, and crazy.

Huffy was one of the final three American brands of bicycles.  All have since been put out of business by China.

What was it you said about American made vehicles?

You just named 3 brands either owned by or manufactured in Taiwan and/or China...  Sigh...And it's 'Fisher', not 'Fischer'.  Did you vote for Busch?

Let me educate the smart [bleep] pig:

Fisher bikes are made in Asia, except for the full-suspension rigs (which are made in Wisconsin).
Cannondale - Aluminum Cannondales are made in the U.S. Cannondale, which was owned by founder Joe Montgomery and his son Scott.

In 1985, Schwinn management called mountain bikes a "fad" - oops.12 After two bankruptcies, Schwinn is now owned by Pacific, who also owns GT, Mongoose, and the Pacific (and some other brands). Pacific is headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin.
In 1992, Trek introduced its proprietary OCLV carbon process (Optimum Compaction Low Void) which is still used in its handmade carbon frames. All OCLV carbon frames - road and mountain - are still made in Waterloo, Wisconsin

only the LOW END FRAMES are built in China and Taiwan. the HIGH END Frames, like i buy, are USA Built. Thats why my Cannondale says "MADE IN THE USA" same as my GF! whom i've met and yes mispelled his name anyway, oh my.

"In March 2007, Cannondale announced that basketball superstar LeBron James had become an owner of the company.[7]  In February 2008, Dorel Industries, a diversified consumer products company, announced the purchase of Cannondale from Pegasus for approximately $200 million. Dorel is a U.S. distributor of bicycles made in Taiwan and the People's Republic of China for sale under many historic U.S. cycle brands, including Schwinn, Mongoose, Roadmaster, and GT."  Wikipedia.

Nice 'cut' & 'paste'.  I didn't know you were a fan of LaBron's.
