Give that pesky squirrel a hot-foot with dried and ground hot peppers. Toss the dried peppers in a blender for a moment and scatter the powdered results in the general area of the damage.
When his feet start to ignite, he'll try to lick them clean.
That would be a 'two-strikes and you're out' game.
Consider, too, the possibility that his primary goal might simply be to obtain a drink of water. I leave a hose slowly dripping into a pan near my garden. The birds, squirrels, insects and "who knows who else in the night" use it and that, all by itself, seems to reduce the damage done to the garden proper. The bite marks in the tomatoes pretty much simply quit.

My husband just this morning said something was eating our tomatos. I didn't think squirrels ate them. Thanks for the deterrent hint.
