SF Sanctuary Stupidity

In June it was discovered that the juvenile who killed a father and his sons in San Francisco had been protected from immigration authorities by San Francisco's 'sanctuary city' policy.

Today it comes out that a second killing, by a different juvenile, was allowed because the 'sanctuary city' policies allowed him to avoid being checked by immigration authorities after he was caught for a violent crime and given probation.

San Francisco needs to reverse the sanctuary city law and stop being so naive!  The federal government has stated that it is ILLEGAL for them to be here and law enforcement is required to investigate whether the person has a legal right to be in the country, especially after they are arrested on crimes,  Most importantly violent ones.  A friends husband was killed by an illegal drunk driver and this is the 2nd dui this man had.  He should have been deported after the 1st one.  We have enough of our own criminals so Mexico needs to take back theirs.

I hear with Obama at the helm, this will only get worse, nationwide.

You may think the illegal immigrants need to go back where they came from but they are the ones who make up most of the population in the United States.  It is people like you who make matters worse when telling them to go back.  Instead, you could find a way to prevent what is happening.  They helped build this nation that is called one of the better places to be in right now, therefore, they deserve to stay here as much as anyone.

Too Much ESL?

mex.irigrl wrote '... illegal immigrants ... make up most of the population in the United States. ...'.

This is a simple exercise in math. Given the current U.S. population of 305.8M, and the estimated population of illegal aliens (2004) of 12M, and a high estimate of 30M, I don't see how 10% of something makes up most of something. Then again, when I went to school, we didn't lose 1/3 of the school day to ESL as kids do now.

You are on to something when you say I should find a way to prevent what is happening. What was happening until about 1970 was that the population of the U.S. was leveling off. The population of the third world continued to rise unchecked, except by the occasional civil war. Our middle class flourished. The third world found greater depths of poverty. As kids growing up in the Midwest, we joked about the occasional '[bleep]', but never actually saw one. People visited countries like Canada and Mexico, then returned to their American culture - a culture rich from assimilating waves of immigration for over 200 years. (Part of our Constitution came from the constitution of the Iroquois Nation)

50 years later we find that 10% of our population is here illegally, in part because they see more 'opportunity' here, and in part because they refuse to fight to keep their home countries a decent place to live. And as their countries became more weakened by corruption and greed, they became easy targets for the rising power that was being given U.S. corporations to affect our lives as well as our livings. This disparity was amplified by the corruption within our political process, as politicians abandoned their people in favor of their corporate sponsors. And as we see today, it seems to be getting worse.

Now your statement that I make matters worse when telling them to go back seems an emotional reaction. Did you consider that, say 20M illegal alien parents have 10M children who would return with them to their countries of origin? Some of those kids have been exposed to American culture for most of their lives and hopefully have absorbed the best our culture has to offer - its reliance on the Constitution, a sense of fairness and equity, of honesty, generosity and beneficence, and a respect for education and the law. These are the seeds being taken home to be planted as weapons against the tyranny and corruption of the aliens' countries of origin. Think of it as America's gift of thanks for the help you provided in building this country.

Now you need to build your countries.

Why is this not even debated openly. Should we the people even have a voice?

I am not - but would be interested to see if there were any loopholes or parts that could be reassessed.

Most countries have strict requirements to learn the native language. Immersion works and if you do not speak the language, bottom line it is difficult to even know or exercise your rights. Although the intention is good, I think the increased resources for translation servcies might be a monster in itself. It is important we create an environment where one is proud to speak and read  English (in addition to your native tongue) - but also educate others on the importance of the concept of immersion  - and only an Academic Professional or a Linguistics Professional can explain this better - the workings of the mind and languages.

I know and have known several languages and also have learned that in order to really speak the language correctly, best understand how the culture or subculture thinks. This again might be where some of the problems lie. American culture is ever changing and quite a melting pot. So possibly some definitive structured boundaries might be necessary.

All you have to do is ask those from other countries what they think the typical American is - the replies are quite shocking and embarrassing. Most of it is propaganda.

I knew a gal who told me her story -  the father of her child is illegal and his past is shady to say the least. Enough so, that when she offered to file for residency the correct way ...he continually denied it. According to her, he works for a construction company and gets free room and board to boot. Sad, because the child suffers. When he gave her trouble with paying child support (controlling), she was afraid to file for fear he would be deported. She later found she could (not sure of the ins and outs). The only thing I could tell her was that he was an adult and he sounds like a fairly intelligent and saavy person that knows the system and if he loves his daughter he will fight tooth and nail and become legal.

What concerned me the most was her comments of the numerous Barrios in Oakland that she says provide fake ID's and complete papers and identities. Hmmm
