Any predictions? I hope the preseason isn't an indication of what to expect as they had the worst cacti league record at 6-17-2. Thanks goodness for ties. Clean-up hitter Bengie Molina needs to stay healthy. Which Barry Zito will show up?????? -------- Now that fan favorite Swisher is gone, let's hope Jack Cust can put the steroid allegations behind him and fill Swisher's shoes. The A's open against the Rex Sox in Japan. 001, are you going to that game?

It's pretty obvious that the Giants are pulling a classic rope-a-dope on the rest of the league. This is all a ruse to get everyone else complacent.

Remember we did this thread last year just before opening day? The difference is, this year we don't even have any lofty expectations heading into the season. Unless you count the plethora of homeruns we fear will get hit off Giant pitching as lofty expectations. ----------- Chavez can't keep carrying the A's on his back. He'll never last the year. I hope both teams get it together somehow and some budding young stars emerge to help us out.

I think the Giant's only hope is to get Crazy Crab back full time as their mascot. I hear that there's been some behind-the-scenes contract negotiations going on and the hang up right now is Crazy's demand for a "molting clause" in the contract whereby he'll be paid during those inactive periods.

Speaking of clauses, Lou Seal would probably demand a "claws clause" in the pre-fight stipulations. Crazy will have to have rubber bands around his nippers.

The Crab's contract could be deemed unenforceable because he was Crazy when he signed it. Just think how messy it will be when his attorney gets his claws on it.

With appologies to comedian Kip Adotta who wrote this. It's a great song. --It was April the 41st, being a quadruple leap year I was driving in downtown Atlantis My Barracuda was in the shop, so I was in a rented Stingray, and it was overheating So I pulled into a Shell station They said I'd blown a seal I said, "Fix the damn thing and leave my private life out of it, okay pal?" While they were doing that I walked over to a place called the oyster bar -- a real dive But I knew the owner, he used to play for the Dolphins I said, "Hi, Gil!!!" You hafta yell, he's hard of herring CHORUS: Think I had a wet dream Cruisin' through the Gulf Stream Oooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Wet dream... Gil was also down on his luck Fact is, he was barely keeping his head below water I gullied up to the sandbar He poured the usual Rusty snail, hold the grunion, shaken, not stirred With a peanut butter and jellyfish sandwich on the side -- heavy on the mako I slipped him a fin -- on porpoise I was feeling good I even dropped a sand dollar in the box for Jerry's Squids -- for the halibut Well, the place was crowded We were packed in like sardines They were all there to listen to the big band sounds of Tommy Dorsal -- what sole Tommy was rockin' the place with a very popular tuna -- "Salmon Chanted Evening" And the stage was surrounded by screaming groupers Probably there to see the bass player One of them was this cute little yellowtail And she's giving ME the eye So I figure, this is my chance for a little fun You know -- a piece of Pisces But she said things I just couldn't fathom She was too deep, and seemed to be under a lot of pressure Boy, could she drink She drank like a... she drank A LOT... I said, "What's your sign?" She said, "Aquarium" I said, "GREAT!!! Let's get tanked!" CHORUS I invited her up to my place for a little midnight bait I said, "C'mon baby, it'll only take a few minnows" She threw me that same old line "Not tonight -- I got a haddock" And she wasn't kiddin' either, 'cuz in came the biggest, meanest looking haddock I'd ever seen come down the pike He was covered with mussels He came over to me, he said, "Listen shrimp -- don't you come trolling around here" What a crab This guy was steamed -- I could see the anchor in his eyes I turned to him, I said, "Abalone -- You're just being shellfish" Well, I knew it was going to be trouble, and so did Gil, 'cuz he was already on the phone to the cods The haddock hits me with a sucker punch I catch him with a left hook He eels over It was a fluke, but there he was, lying on the deck, flat as a mackerel Kelpless I said, "Forget the cods, Gil, this guy's gonna need a sturgeon" Well, the yellowtail was impressed with the way I landed her boyfriend She came over to me, she said, "Hey big boy, you're really a game fish" "What's your name?" I said, "Marlin" CHORUS Well from then on, we had a whale of a time I took her to dinner I took her to dance I bought her a bouquet of flounders And then I went home with her And what did I get for my trouble? A case of the clams CHORUS CHORUS/FADE ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Carl: This place got a pool? Ty: Pool and a pond....... Pond be good for you.

They should have a good 3 days before they start to stink! (I was watching the John Adams movie yesterday on one of the HBO channels and Ben Franklin says to John Adams after he kept getting under the Continental Congress' skin with his everyday rants, ------ "Remember John, you are a guest in Philadelphia, and Guests, like fish, begin to stink after 3 days." Man, what I would give to see Yogi and Ben in the same room exchanging one liners.)

When Zito was with the A's he was one of their best pitchers to have come down the PIKE. The thing with him is problems in the early innings. Once he got his rhythm he became tough to hit. He can't seem to use the curve as an out pitch now.

OK, I am retiring the fish puns. Some records are not meant to be broken. Besides I'd end up with an asterisk. Google made me do it. That and KSEG in Sacramento that used to play the song every "Fishhead friday" just before a rousing on air game of "Know your Fish". Also great classsic rock played here. Life long Giant's fan says "A's". The A's have a great system at developing new young talent. The Giants have great system at taking new young talent and turning it into a bunch of old guy's on the DL. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Carl: This place got a pool? The A's should have the better record. Now that the Rockies and Padres are good, the Giants will get beat up by them and the Diamondbacks and Dodgers in the NL west. The Angels are always good, but the A's might be able to give the Mariners and Rangers a run for their money. If worse comes to worse and both end up in last place in their divisions, the A's will be in 4th and the Giants in 5th!

Losing Frandsen shouldn't be a problem. The Giants should have plenty of old veteran cast-offs waiting in the wings for another chance to start. Hey Stoney, you get up early enough to actually watch those 3:00 in the morning A's games in Japan, don't you?

Yeah, there's plenty of other fish in the sea. This shouldn't hurt the Giants any worse than they already would have been. Maybe they can pick up a Marlin or a Ray to fill in this season. It will be a long season for bay area fans, but there should be plenty of good seats available. Always look on the bright side of life...

You're opening a whole new can of worms there. They just don't have a top pitcher like when Jim "Catfish" Hunter ruled the waters. We'll have to watch out for those Mariners. Can we still get Tim Salmon or has he swum upstream for retirement? Holy Mackeral, that was tough way to lose last night. Houston Street couldn't get through the 9th. I think I'll go have a Bass ale and try to let it go.

Yes BJ, I am going to "Opening Day" next week on Tuesday. Just not the game in Japan. Technically, the home opener was this morning, but Tuesday will still be the first home game in the states. It's kind of weird. It isn't Opening Day, because it isn't a day game and it isn't there opener. Did you hear that people with Satelite dishes that tried to catch the game this morning were shut out. That's brutal. Something fishy going on. I wonder if it was the same thing that happened when Bonds hit his 70th HR and the linew went dead?

Emil Brown makes up for his baserunning gaffe in the 10th inning yesterday by hitting a 3-run HR to propel the A's to victory this morning in Japan. Harden looked sharp. Let's hope he can get through a whole season - I know its a stretch. Now back to the states for some more practice games before resuming real games next week.

I can't imagine either team taking this series very seriously, especially the A's who have already played 2 games that count. Its not like the old days before interleague play when this series was for bragging rights. They'll be playing real games against each other this summer. However, if you have some time on your hands, its always nice to get out to the ballpark for some baseball action. Hopefully, these teams can be competitive this season.

Looks like Lincecum pitched very well tonight for the Giants, allowing no hits in 5 innings with 9 Ks. The kid is a stud. However, I barely recognize any of the A's players. Where was Hannahan, Sweeney, Suzuki, Cust & Emil Brown? And the A's started Greg Smith, with Andrew Brown and Fernando Hernandez coming in for relief? Did these guys even make the trip to Japan? The A's used 7 pitchers in the 2 games against the Red Sox and none of these guys pitched. I'm sure they were excited to get some practice games in between regular season games.

I read that the A's still need to make a couple roster cuts so they might be giving the borderline guys an extra look, although I read that they have less than ten players from last years team. Lincecum might be the Giants best starter, unless Zito can get it together. Both teams play each other the end of June so I guess that will be the real Battle of the Bay. Hope both are still in the hunt at that time.

Hey, did you guys happen to sea the headline on the article in the paper yesterday about the Giants? I couldn't help but crack up! They stole that from Cowboy!: Giants flounder at home in exhibition vs. Mariners 03/28/2008 - SAN FRANCISCO -- Though the Giants returned to their home ballpark Thursday night, they looked no closer to being ready for the regular season.
