a pure set up.. these thugs (black) .. dont give me the racist crap either.. just the facts. robbing dealers has been going on forever in oakland, sf, richmond, etc... these are some violent times, guns on 16 and 17 yr olds... sympathy goes out to the family for their loss. now watch these defendants all plead not guilty and public tax money used to defend them. we have the death penalty USE IT.. dont let the bad guys be the only ones using it.
Why doesn't the CC Times identify the other two criminals? These punks were involved in a MURDER in our town and we deserve to know who they are no matter what age. Oh wait, let me guess, another black criminal shooting our kids over what? A few dollars worth of marijuana? These kids were never taught the value of life. Are these criminals from another family (and I use that term rather loosely) that is living in Antioch under government assistance? It is time to clean up all the crap that have moved from Oakland, Richmond and other ghettos from around the bay to East County, and tell our politicians that enough is enough! My son skates at the Antioch skate park and knew Matt. My heart goes out to his family. May God bless you.
[bleep] you. Matt was the best person you could find. He was just trying to make some extra cash. If you don't know what you are talking about, don't talk at all.
My heart goes out to this family. I know their pain all too well. My step-daughter was killed in a drive-by shooting in Antioch almost 3 years ago. She was a good girl-wife and mother. The Antioch police department did virtually nothing about it for the first 2 years. They were too busy or too lazy -take your pick. At least this family will get some closure someday. These killers were caught. And everybody is right-hate to stereo type but the truth hurts... it is the lower class black juveniles that seem to have no value for human life. Parents and Police need to make some changes quick. God Bless this family who is going thru sheer hell right now because some kid wanted to get high for free.
Its a shame that all of this went down. The crazy thing is I live about two blocks from that park. I understand it was some black thugs who tried to rob this guy and ended up killing him, but I dont understand why nobody is blaming the kid for his actions as well? If this story was about a black guy selling marijuana and he got robbed and killed, I guarantee the responses to the story would be way different. I feel for the family of this kid, but in the end it was his actions that resulted in this as well.
Your right, his actions put him in harms way. If he was not selling pot, he would still be alive today, but those thugs would have shot him for his cell phone, his wallet, or his ipod anyway. I am sure there are kids in Danville, San Ramon, Alamo or Pleasanton that also sell pot to other kids and don't get shot. The difference is that the kids in Antioch need to realize that there are many bad kids that have moved here from really bad areas. Our kids need to stay away from drugs altogether. It doesn't help that the state has pretty much legalized marijuana. Kids start to think that it's OK to smoke pot. The teenager that was shot on his way to Walmart last year wasn't selling pot, but he was shot by a black kid that tried to rob him. African American families need to look at themselves and figure out why they are producing violent and anti-social children. Until that happens, no government program will fix this major problem in the African American community.
I agree... when you play the game... be prepared for anything. greed, jealousy, etc... sets in and people will rob and kill you for nothing nowadays.
lots of times you meet one guy... then the next time you are jumped by multiple for your stuff.. the guy killed by home invaders in pittsburg.. son let it known they had pot and he was selling it... so no the victim was completely innocent in this... but how would you like your kids going to school with these other two.. 16 and 17.. probably antioch high causing more probs.. and violent enough to kill someone over some pot. im sure the parents knew he smoked... friends, but never thought anything like this would ever happen.
We have drugs in Danville. We have kids selling drugs in Danville. We had a white kid in Danville shot and killer by a black kid from Oakland that was in a group home in Danville.
The white kid was suppose to be a small time drug dealer but I dont know for certain.
Oakland/Richmond stop exporting your thugs to us. We understand you are fine with the senseless killing but we are not.
Look at the demographics of Danville and tell me race is not an issue.
The article said "a city park" in Anthich not "the City Park" in Antioch. I think that is where fixtthismess got confused. I went back and reread the article. I was just curious where his assumption came from and now I know.....an easy assumption given the proximity to the school.
I wonder where Fixthismess lives. Could be he didn't see the article right after it was posted, when the headline specified Williamson Ranch Park, though it doesn't any longer. That made me click on the article right away since we live about a quarter mile away from there, as the crow flies. Even though the headline has changed, the article does go on to specify Williamson Ranch Park, one of many local city parks.
my bad LOL... either way.. would you want your kids in any school with these thugs ?? brazen enough to set up a robbery which turned into murder... when one of the thugs if not more was carrying a weapon..
is DV worse than Antioch high ?? didnt they have lots of probs at antioch with kids hanging out by the gas station..i remember cops from all over the area had to come ?? last school year...?
As sad as this is, the kid made a very bad choice when he decided to deal with illegal drugs.
As a parent, we can only do so much for our kids to get and keep them on the straight and narrow; but it bothers me that the article emphasized more of the good side of the kid than the very bad decision he made to become an illegal drug dealer.
KUDOs to the APDs for quickly tracking down these three thugs and hopefully the District Attorney will prosecute the "minors" as adults!
And these thugs live in a HCV home, that HCV should be revoked, as federal law holds the HCV holder responsible for anyone living in their home.
You would tell the kids that think they are ok to deal drugs that at some point they will run into a problem. You start messing with Black Thugs and Mexicans and they will kill you for your pathetic ziplock bag of pot. This is a cold hard fact. This exact same thing happened in Danville recently but no one will tell the truth so this WILL happen again.
4Antioch, I agree with you completely,as parents we can only do so much. It sounds like this young man was raised to make the right choices in life and chose not to. It's like the saying " You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink". Unfortunately this young man got burned by the nature of the business he chose. Please don't let this lesson be lost .........
Although I do agree this person put themselves at a much higher risk if he indeed was involved with drugs. Live by the sword is not appropriate here. If you are a thugs and you kill others then yes live by the sword applies. If you commit NON violent crime like selling drugs it does not.
It is still a crime to be sure and it does put you at risk but it is NOT the same as being a violent thug that would kill any of us for almost anything.
I agree with you and I appreciate your INTELLIGENT input.
The media did focus on what good the victim did, which is more appropraite for an obituary, if you ask me. I said below, crime begets crime. I'm sure we can find good in every criminal, but when you chose a life of criminality, there is a higher risk of becoming a victim of circumstances.
It's sad all the way around, but it's a risk you take as a drug dealer.
OMG- you all are a bunch of racist idiots! A delinquent shot another delinquent, plain and simple. Getting robbed and /or killed is a risk you take when you sell drugs. It makes no difference what ethnicity you are or where you live. Crime happens all over. It's certainly a shame when any life is lost to a grave or to jail because there are innocent victims, ie the families and community, but bottom line- you lessen your chances of being shot if you elect to work as something other than a drug dealer. I work in the criminal justice system hands on, and I know first hand that crime crosses all boundaries of race, status and financial situations. Crime begets crime, period.
Please check DOJ statistics. Please open your eyes and take a walk through Richmond and Oakland. Tell me there is no ralationship between race and violent crime.
Maybe if your head was not in the sand you could see this. For the most part this is black on black crime. It is a fact.
Crime does happen in all races that is true but it does not happen at the same rate in all races. Tell me I am wrong about this.
Tom925 this boy that was murdered was white and came from a very good family. This isnt a balck on black crime. This boy made a stupid choice and now he is dead. The shooter and his friends I am not sure of their race. One was from Oakland not sure of the others. This doesnt matter really as they commited a senseless murder and all because they were greedy. Trying to get something for nothing and took a life. They are low lives and need to be tried as adults. Selling is bad and leads to bad things. Too bad he met up with these thugs before he could turn his life around. My condolences to the family. I am so very sorry for your loss.
how many black on black murders in E. Oakland and Richmond every year ? flat out murders, drug dealers, [bleep]s... too many murders lately.. mostly all commited by blacks.. take that as racist if you like... but i take it as the facts..
i do agree with that the choices you make .. can come back to haunt you..
whether the kid was selling weed or not. Teenage boys should not be walking around with guns robbing people. These kids will take anything from anybody-just give them a chance. Oakland and Richmond need to get out of East County. I moved here 13 years ago and it was oh so different then. And what about my step-daughter??? She wasn't doing a damn thing wrong and she is dead because a car full of blacks thought it would be fun to play with guns and shoot someone!!!
You are pathetic. He was 18 years old. He was selling "small scale" of marijuana. Its not like he was selling Cocaine or Meth. Give me a break. Did you ever stop to think that the friends and family of Matt would stop and read how uncaring you are? Ive known Matt for years. He was a GREAT guy. He made a bad choice. But he didn't deserve to be killed for it. You are heartless.
alot of peole make bad choices, and die for it. my heart goes out for the family. but if the teens arent taught that there are always consequences for their choices weather good or bad, this is what happens. action=reaction.
how about one [bleep] hole speeder, you, dead and three thugs locked up. oh well thats different right. even though speeding is against the law, and a misdemeanor (same as selling pot), the fact is you see the headline then judge everyone around you but yourself. you let others define how you see the world. what you really should say is one upstanding citizen who has done more for his community than you, Abvecc, who just happend to fall on hard times and three thugs locked up.
if i had it my way it should be three thugs dead and one upstanding citizen given an award.
You seriously think he GETS what he deserves. Did you personally know Matt? Give me a break. He was a friend of mine, and many other people's. He didn't deserve this. Not that I agree with him selling a "small scale...of marijuana" but no one deserves to be killed for it. You seem heartless. You need to understand that his family and dear friends are reading these posts, have some compassion.
dont try and win a verbal arguement with these low lifes.. nobody deserves to be shot for any reason. its pretty bad that someone has to lose their life because some cheap bas tard [bleep] decides he is going to take his. they called the guy on their cell phone, they are STUPID too. glad they are caught.. hopefully tried as adults... death penalty for the shooter, life for the rest.
all three including the 16 year old will be tried as adults. and hopefully the trial will be quick. i do feel bad for the parents of the three teens, one of them stopped by Matt's memorial and hung a cristal angel. breaking up families is a hard thing. but it was the desision of the shooter to break up these familes, for without him pulling the trigger all would come home.
I THINK YOU ARE THE SICKEST PERSON FOR SAYING SOMETHING LIKE THAT.SO THE KID MADE A MISTAKE ARE YOU PERFECT THINK ABOUT HIS FAMILY THEY ARE GOING THROUGH H??? AND CREEPS LIKE YOU NEED TO TAKE A SINKING BOAT AND DONT RETURN. I AM SURE YOUWOULDNT WANT PEOPLE TO SAY THAT ABOUT YOUR KID ANDDONT SAY IT WOULDNT HAPPEN ,MATT WAS A SWEETHEART HE ALWAYS WAS HAPPY AND A VERY NICE KID,I DIDNT KNOW HIM VERY LONG BUT I WILL SAY KEEP YOUR SICK THOUGHTS TO YOURSELF YOU MUST BE A DEVIL.RIP MAT WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU. YOU WILL BE AT STARBUCKS LIKE ALWAYS TO MAKE EVERYONE LAUGH. WE LOVE YOU.
thank you, these comments ppl are posting hurt really badly. one guy said he should rot in hell. in HELL why. why are ppl so crule. they judge what they dont know, and its hard.
hopefully i will see you, buick, on friday. ill be carrying him in.
so do you speed on the freeway cause thats against the law, have you talked on your cell while driving cause thats against the law too. it seems like your heartlessness is causing you to be BAD!!!!
You are just as bad as these murders. Have a heart. This boy (he's 18) made a bad decision to trust. That is all. These murders took his life end of story. This boy was in the wrong place at the wrong time with untrustworthy murders. Sad end of story. I feel so bad for his family. Now because of these murders so many people have to be hurt. Things like this scar people for the rest of their life. I know drugs are bad most people dabble a little when they are young. Just about everyone does. Smoking a little isnt going to kill you. Trusting that eveyone is cool and safe to deal with will I guess. I hope others learn from this you can not trust people you do not know.
We have VERY few black kids here in Danville but one of the very few (imported from Oakland via group home) killed a white kid. This is the only homicide I am aware of in Danville in the past 12 months. So we have very low population of blacks here and very rare cases of murder yet both found each other.
This case involves a white kid shot by a black thug. So how many cases of the reverse happen in Antioch. The number in Danville is zero.
So there were never any murders in danville before the "black thug" came to town?? Had to be at least one...and judging by the demographics of the area...I'd guess it was committed by a white pesron...now that's gotta be one 'white' crime for the record while were on the subject.
(...I'm trying so hard no to bite on the race baiting that goes on constantly in these forums)
yeah of course i feel bad...he got caught up, that why its his bad...he knew what he was getting into. Everyone pays for what they did wrong, eventually in the end.
so the black P O S that the bart officer shot deserved it too... He was also a convicted drug dealer. oh but wait.. a whitey was involved.. but blacks are killing blacks daily in e. oak and richmond but you dont here crap about that.. or do you hear of any black leaders doing anything about it..
how about the black P O S that killed the 4 oakland cops.. raped black women and children.. drug dealer... guess he got what he deserved too.. too bad they didnt blow him away before he did what he did..
Everyone pays for what they did wrong in the end, that's right. But to say you have no sympathy for him. It's not like he went out there with a gun of his own. He was an 18 year old, just starting his life. Who are you to judge how he was supposed to pay for his mistakes? He probably had NO CLUE what he was getting into. He thought he could trust the guy, that's just the way Matt was, so he went out there and got KILLED. I would rather have Matt here alive, and in jail for selling a little weed rather than in a grave. He didn't deserve this, and like I said before, its not like he was selling Coke or Meth. I won't respond to you anymore. I promise. He was a really good friend of mine. It hurts to know that some people honestly don't care about the life of a good guy.
accually knowing him he did not know what he was getting into. he just did what most ppl do got comfortable and pushed his luck. this is hard to say being his brother and all. but he did not deserve this, he is not a drug dealer in the sense that he knows the game. if he did this would not have happened.
the fact is three guys too advantage of his nieveness, and anyone who take advantage of someone at the cost of that person (yes im including banks and corporate greed too) is not a humanbeing but scum.
i love matthew very much and it hurts to see everyone talk about him as if he was an object and not one of us. what if it was your kid, same situation, would it be different. the answer is YES.
Yes, its his bad for not anticipating that ghetto people will kill you for no reason and people will act like its just a way of life. I guess everyone should just not have anything other people want, because that will get you "caught up" and it will be "our bad". Not the people trying to steal it, they are just doing their job right?
KK, save the sarcasm. You can say it was his bad for not anticipating that dibbling in illegal activity can open you up to other illegal activity - maybe even murder. Sometimes the consequences of one's actions are not realized until it's too late. That's one of the burdens of kids growing up. Figuring out how life really works. Figuring out that the choices you make can come back to smite you when you least expect it. I'm sure most parents tell their kids "don't put yourselves in situations you may not be able to get out of" but most teens tend to believe they are immortal and forget that little ditty. Most are fortunate and don't have to pay the price that Matt did but every once in a while we get a solemn reminder.
Don't let your views be colored by the fact that the perps were black because that isn't the lesson here. Bad decisions can have dire consequences. Hopefully you can learn something here that will save you from similar situations.
I know how this is going to sound and how it's going to be taken, but, this kid was a drug dealer. Regardless of his previous acheivements and future goals, at the moment, he was selling drugs and, this is quite a common occurence when living that lifestyle. This should be a lesson to everyone who reads this article, we should all stay in our lane, when we get out of our lane in life and jump into something we really don't know about, who we will be dealing with, then unpredictable things happen. Things that are out of our control, because we are dealing with people we ahve no idea about. When you participate in crime, everyone you're dealing with are criminals, the saying "there is honor among theives" is a lie, you can think, this guy or girl is cool, but there is a lot of jealousy in the streets and jealous people will kill you. Or, if your like this kid, they will think you're a punk and an easy mark, the killers probably never thought he'd fight back, once he did, the youngster got scared and killed him. It's unfortunate and I feel for the family and friends of this kid and I wish I could asuage any anguish they are going through, my prayers are with you all to never have to go through this again.
i will have to agree with you, though i do not define matthew as a drug dealer. thats like saying you are defined as a reckless driver for speeding on the freeway once. but for anyone who want to see who each of these people involved are here is my research:
Does it bother you at all that your bull[bleep] lying [bleep] politicians are spending all their time and your money trying to make tobacco illegal while at the same time trying to legalize marijuana which is much higher in tar and nicotine? Hmmmm. Excreta for brains.
ECC, who gives the right for some pieces of sh it know nothing blacks to determine this kids penalty for selling drugs... does someone get to unload a weapon into them while they are unarmed for buying it ?? or should i say stealing it ?? it shows the total lack of respect for life, theirs and Matts . i guess we are lucky they got caught before this happened again and again. Because these are lost blacks, ones that wont put the effort to make their lives better, rather cry racism, poor me.. and decided a life of crime was the way to get by. The sad but true part is they probably would have been MURDERED by other blacks due to their choices in life, other thugs that want what they had.. happens everyday.. blacks killing blacks over drugs and gangs. Lives wasted because they didnt want to pay, they just wanted. A premeditated MURDER which they all should get convicted for..
funny that you say we are lucky they got caught cause i was talking with some of matthews friends and a few weeks earlier the samething happened in the same park but the victim got away. they pulled a gun and the victim jumped out of the car and took off before anything could happen.
i do not know if any of this is true, just hearsay nor do i know if it is the same two people who killed my brother but it is too coinsidental.
My deepest condolences to Matt's family and friends. My son attended middle and high school with Matt and still considered him a friend.
To Matt's brothers - I would lovingly suggest you stay away from this forum. The problem with places like this are that the majority of posters are ignorant of the true situation. They know only what is reported in the newspaper. They are posting based on a very narrow view. They didn't know Matt. They don't know your family. They didn't know how truly small-scale and common Matt's "business" was. There is a beautiful condolence link connected to the articles as well.
I did not know Matt, but it angers me that his murder is going to end with him classified as a drug dealer. Take a look in your local high schools people. There are at least 20 kids your own could probably name from whom they could score a bag of weed. It's been this way for decades. Yes, it's illegal. So, yes, it is wrong.
Instead of going on these rants about racisim and turning Matt into the equivilant of a cartel head, take the story as the sad commentary of our society that it is. Teens murdering teens over stupid, low-value stuff and the lack of value being placed on life.
Wahoo wrote: "There are at least 20 kids your own could probably name from whom they could score a bag of weed."
Wahoo, it is exactly that apathy for illegal drug sales that has lead us to this day.
Face it, illegal drug sales and use has a direct connection with crime. Until these kids start telling the police the names of the kids (you mentiond "at least 20") there will continue to be these kinds of incidents.
My kids knew that I'd turn them over to the police in a heartbeat! But then again, I worked for the National Security Agency where we knew we had to live the straight and narrow in order to maintain our job and security clearances. Believe me, routine polygraphs and special background security checks every five years will keep you (and your family) from straying!
that's sounds like you and your family are wards of the state..scary really...unable to deviate from the beaten path or even mess up once or your bread and butter is caput! What type of parent turns their kid in to the cops for having weed? You sound like the one mofo that comes around and bring the 'narc' vibe to a party...totally killing the party for everyone else. Its not directly a derivative of the "stop snitching" campain when I say nobody likes to hang out with a whistle-blower or a potential informant-LOL!
We understnnd that life means nothing to you. When you kill each other it is barbaric indeed but it is the life you decided to live and die.
We normal people on the other hand do value life. Please understand when your world collides with ours people will complain and call the cops. We will "snitch".
We also understand that jail means nothing to you as you have many friends already there but you will not have the opportunity to disrupt our lives while you are there.
In the meantime we will demand longer sentencing to keep you there.

Lets go back to having all the blacks in Pittsburg and all the whites in Antioch. It was such peaceful times back then. I will be starting a seperate posting called Section 8....this is not the place.
He got caught in something he did not understand. He was NO THREAT to anyone though. He was not a person that was going to shoot anyone. These thugs that killed him are all too common. They are human time bombs. There is a fairly accurate way to detect them but if you do so you are a racist.
I'll one up ya- let's just bring jim crow back altogether!
Blacks'll have to give up all that good opportunty and empathy they get from whites(no more affirmative action or leaving the ghetto for the suburbs), and whites'll have to give black and mexicans all of their borrowed culture ( no more jazz/souls/rock music , no more burritos or cheap labor)
this is stupid. people have been killing people since the beginning of time. murder has no color. check out your own culture before you say stupid, ignorant remarks. the young man is dead from selling drugs. what is to be expected when a person decides to do illegal transactions, they open themselves up to all sorts of things, like dealth or jail. come up kids wake up... don't you see!

FACT: There are a lot more blacks in antioch than there used to be.
FACT: There is a lot more crime. Serious crime in Antioch since there have been more blacks there. Look at the string of robberies and the arrests they make are young black punks? And you just call the others who have lived there and watch there town go to hell racists?
You are too damn ignorant to even understand those facts. Ha?
Weed-- yes, it's illegal. Matt put himself in a bad and stupid situation that he could have avoided. However, it was a situation that really shouldn't have ended like this. I can't believe that a life is lost over weed that barely cost anything... these greedy kids WOULD take everything. NOBODY is perfect but NOBODY deserves to get murdered.
I agree with Wahoo. To Matt's brother, I think that you should stay away from this forum. My thoughts and prayers go to Matt's family and friends. Don't listen to these people that are saying that Matt deserves to 'rot in hell' or anything like that. People will always talk and say things... especially closed minded people. As soon as they read "drugs/dealer/weed/shooting/murder/roberry" in the headline, they are so quick to judge. Those who knew Matt really well knew what kind of person he was. I think that they would have a more accurate description of what type of person he was, etc. So to those that knew him, you decide what you think of him, and if you think that he was a good person, friend, brother, son...if he was a drugdealer or not... etc... then DON'T listen to these strangers. Yes, it is upsetting reading what people had to say but people will talk. Debates like this will go on for a lifetime. I met Matt back in middle school & knew him til we graduated. Although we were never really close friends or anything, he was not a terrible person from what I remembered. He was goofy and funny... and certainly did not deserve this. If he was such a terrible person, then WHY did he even have a candlelit memorial and why did so many people attend? Obviously, he meant something to someone, he was a person good enough for people to stop by and pay their respects.

Wow ! Trevor I was just as shocked at some of these comments as you. This post if for you and your family. You were a wonderful family to Matt. Your Parents and Kathy were simply amazing when they raised you kids. Your brother was a wonderful person. He was young he made a mistake (and it is known that young mens reasoning skills are not formed until 20)
I am sure if he had to do it all again he would not have made that mistake twice. Don't let comments from people who do not even know the situation or not educated enough to make those comments get to you. As a mother of teens I understand they too could make the same mistakes because they are trusting and they think nothing can happen to them.
The sad thing is the kids who shot them or their familys do not understand the hurt they have caused by taken Matts life away. Greed took over. and for some reason young teens do not value their life and have no guilt to shoot and kill someone for any reason. I believe if Matt was sitting in his car without dealing any drugs he would of been shot anyway. These kids were up to no good. Where were these kids parents. Who holds them responsible?
It don't matter what Matt he deserved to live. He deserved to have a long life to make mistakes so he can fix them. My heart goes out to you and your family. God Bless You and lets hope we as adults take this violence seriously and start taking action in protecting our youth .
I am not here to judge Matt or anyone else I am here to offer support to you and your family.
WOW...I HAVE READ ALL OF THESE COMMENT'S AND FELT THE NEED 2 STAND UP AS A SINGLE "PARENT" OF 6 KIDS WHICH 3 OF THEM (BOYS) WERE CLOSE FRIENDS OF MATT AS WAS I....TO MAKE THINGS CLEARER 4 PEOPLE 1ST AND 4 MOST, MATT BUTLER WAS NOT A DRUG DEALER AS WE (ADULTS) KNOW A DRUG DEALER, MATT (AS WITH MOST OF OUR KIDS THESE DAYS-YOURS AND MINE) WEATHER YOUR KIDS ARE UP FRONT WITH YOU OR NOT SMOKE AND OR SMALL TIME DELIVER AKA DEAL WEED, SO IF NO ONE HAS TOLD YOU PARENTS OUT THERE YET, YOUR NIEHBORS KIDS ARE DOING IT, YOUR KID ARE DOING IT N MY KIDS ARE DOING IT(EVEN IF WE LIKE IT OR NOT, BUT DONT BE IN DENILE) I WOULD HAVE TO SAY EVERY KID DOING IT IS SOME HOW SELLING FROM TIME TO TIME AMOUNG THERE OWN CIRCLE OF FRIENDS...WE MIGHT NOT SEE THEM BUT BEST BELIEVE THEY HAVE DONE IT OR ARE DOING IT AND NOT 2 MENTION THE GOVENOR U VOTED IN IS ABOUT 2 LEGALIZE IT AND ALLOW STORES 2 SELL IT AND THE PROFIT WILL BE COMING BACK 2 YOU PERSONALLY AND/OR THROUGH YOUR COMMUNITY AND OTHER PROGRAMS (SO ? )...SO MATT WAS A VICTM IN ALL SENSE OF THE WORD N AS MOST OF US ALL BELIEVE IN GOD (I HOPE) NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT 2 TAKE A LIFE OR JUDGE EXCEPT GOD...DOESNT IT SAY SOMETHING LIKE, IF YOU JUDGE, YOU YOURSELF SHALL BE JUDGED, ON JUDGEMENT DAY? NOW PLEASE ALLOW ME TO PLACE MATT'S "ABOUT ME" FROM HIS MYSPACE PAGE SO SOME GET A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WHO MATT WAS AS A PERSON. THESE WORDS TELL YOU WHO HE IS AND WHAT HIS VIEWS WERE AND BY READING IT WILL ALSO ENLIGHTEN YOU ON WHAT TYPE OF YOUNG MAN HE WAS BECOMING, SO PLEASE SIT BACK AND ENJOY THE WORDS/VOICE 'WE' AS HIS OTHER FAMILY MISS SO MUCH... AND REMEMBER- ANYONE WHO DIED A VOILENT DEATH IS A VICTIM:......MATT'S MYSPACE: early early mornings at Starbucks. There are times where I'm on my way to work before my friends are even asleep yet. When I get off work I head on over to Pittsburg to go to school at LMC. Where I sit down and learn about cars, then go out in the shop and work on them. During summer i used to have no job and no school and did nothing with my life all day. Now I stay busy. It's rare for me to be free. And when I am free I'm usually sleeping. But thats life and I can't complain about it . . . I'd much rather be busy then bored. I got 2 half brothers and 1 full brother. I live with both my parents in Antioch. I first started skateboarding when I was like . . 7 years old i think. Never got to good cuz I'd always injure myself. Ended up dislocating my knee during the first 12 hours of spring break my Senior year of high school. I Love the Summer and Hate the Winter! Except Snowboarding. Snowboarding is the only reason I don't hibernate. If snowboarding didn't exist I don't know what I would do during the short days that are freezing cold. I love the Summer becuase it offers much more then Winter does. Like camping, wakeboarding, mountain biking, hiking, boating, swimming, and a bunch of other fun stuff I don't really feel like listing. I used to be a Boy Scout. I gotta say I loved it. I've done so many things I never thought I would do in life. Like I have never thought I would bike around Lake Tahoe or go crawling through some underground caves. Backpacking through the wilderness or White Water Rafting down a class 4 rapid. :) I've had many girl friends when I was younger . . . Now I never have any. I don't see the point in asking a girl to be mine and only mine unless I truely know she will be loyal and love and care for me the same way I would for her. Doesn't sound like that would be hard to find, but in the world we all live in, it really just is. I'm not quite sure if I believe love at first sight. But I do believe that everyone has a perfect soul mate somewhere out in this world. I thought I found my soul mate . . . but I guess not :/ Long and complicated story. So I'm open and still searching. It's a shame when people give up. But sometimes people just need to slow down and relax so that they can be found. Cuz it can be hard to find someone when they are out searching. I believe I view life completely different from most of the people in the world. I just don't understand how people can have no heart and be so cruel to others. But that is how society is turning . . . People just don't give a [bleep] anymore. If everyone just gave like, say 1 [bleep] a day, that would be over a few billion more [bleep]s given. Everyone would be much happier and smile and live better. lol, sorry if you don't understand that . . . It's kind of a inside joke. Anyways . . . all that you just read is just a piece of my many intriguing thoughts that process through my head everyday. There is so much more to me then those few paragraphs. I don't even think any of that even describes me . . . lol. Oh well, now you somewhat know about me. :)
Who I'd like to meet:
I'd like to meet a girl who understands life. Knows how to act and respect other people and their possessions. I want to meet someone who is real, someone who doesnt have to put a fake image to a certain crowd to be accepted. They should always act themselves and not have shame in it. I want to meet the most chill, happy, fun person I can. Someone who doesnt complain. Listens to the same music as I. Can just sit and do nothing and still enjoy themselves. Someone who sees the world different from others. Isnt a jerk, doesnt cheat, or lie. Someone who is down for anything. Even if that anything is just laying on some grass watching the clouds go by and trying to find different shapes out of them (thats always fun to do:) I guess I'm just waiting for the perfect girl. If this is you and you dont know me . . . just message me and we shall sit and have a nice chat. If this is you and you already know me then I guess I dont know you well enough, so we should talk more.
THANK YOU FOR READING, WE MISS MATT DEARLY BUT THROUGH HIS PASSING MY SONS HAVE COME TO A NEW CROSS ROAD IN LIFE AND I'M ALMOST SURE MATT IS GUIDING THEM, ITS SAD HOW WE HAVE TO LOOSE A LIFE TO MAKE US VALUE OUR OWN... PLEASE DONT PASS JUDGEMENT AND THINK ABOUT IF IT WAS YOUR OWN CHILD GUNNED DOWN LIKE THAT WOULD YOU BE SPEAKING IN THE SAME TONE WITH THE SAME WORDS....ITS BEEN HARD FOR ALL OF US MATT'S PARENT, MATT'S FRIENDS AND MATT'S COMMUNITY LETS EDUCATE AND SPEND MORE TIME KNOWING WHAT OUR CHILDREN ARE DOING BECAUSE I TELL YOU THIS IF MY CHILD HAD A GUN IN MY HOUSE IM GONNA KNOW ABOUT IT...THIS WAS A HOMMICIED/ROBBERY...AND SO WHEN YOUR CHILD COMES HOME WITH A NEW IPOD OR CELL PHONE, MONEY OR ANYTHING AND YOU KNOW YOU DIDNT BUY IT ...ASK QUESTIONS!!! IT MIGHT SAVE THE LIFE OF ANOTHER CHILD OUT THERE....GET THE GUNS OFF THE STREET....FOR US AND HIS FAMIY MATT WAS A GOOD DECENT BOY WITH A FUTURE AND THE WORST THING ABOUT SAYING GOODBYE IS NEVER GETTING THE CHANCE TO SAY IT...THANK YOU JANET ADAMS, MOTHER OF ANGEL, ALEJANDRO AND JESSE aka DACER...WE LOVE YOU MATT
I only knew matt a short time, i met him at starbucke and he always made sure our drinks were done the way they should be. there was something about him he could make you laugh if your day wasnt going right yes matt made a mistake but only for one reason,i am sure he knew he was doing wrong, and i think if he could do it over he woudnt get into that. i will never forget matt and he will always be in starbucks,my prayers are with the family and matt will be with you forever in your hearts. god bless
as I read these comments Im kinda shocked. I feel for this family, I feel for the friends of the kid. I also feel for the other family. Wow what a crazy situation. I think about all the dumb things I did when I was younger and can honestly thank God that Im still here. Yes he was a doedoe for selling weed, yes he put himself in a bad situation but gosh... we ALL put ourselves in bad situations every day. All we can say is he's in a better place now and God has a plan for us all. We may not understand now but everything happens for a reason. RIP and godbless
so for the millions of people smoking pot, who do you think they get it from ... dealers.. arnold is even considering legalizing it (although not yet ) its called supply and demand.. if nobody wanted it, then nobody would be selling it, and there is lots of demand. the penalty for selling pot is minor, not the DEATH PENALTY. it was a premeditated crime..
so you made your opinion known about the kids selling it, what is your opinion of the people who commited this MURDER., who set this kid up ? premeditated..
this was a kid with a job, can you say that about the murderers, a kid going to school, can you say that about the murderers, a kid with goals, you know the rest...
the 14yr old robber the other day.. did a white kid with pot make him commit armed robbery ?
who should we put the blame on for that ? seems like nobody wants to blame the actual murderers for this.. it was a flat out robbery that turned into murder. they wanted something without not paying..or working for it.. low life thugs
Do you have any feelings for his family and what h?? they are going through.keep your sick and hateful remarks to your self, what you are doing isnt right or did any of you think about that?matt made a mistake and i know if he could go back he wouldnt do it again, but he cant so the ones that have nothing nice to say PLEASE SHUT UP, the family just lost him give them time. have you lost a son or daughter?matt was a sweetheart no matter what mistake he made.
Buick- Of course I have feelings for this family or any family who looses a child under any circumstances - in criminal activity or otherwise - For 7 years I was involved with countless of parents or care-takers who lost children to some activity involving drugs (alcohol and other illegal substances) in the Contra Costa County area. Many of the adults involved were oblivious to what the young person was doing and only after the local police or emergency unit contact them did they "discover" the sad facts. When you are in a situation where young people are involved and you are "prohibited" to reveal confidences given to you in "private" it is not easy to take when you hear that the youth is dead. In the other side of the coin the majority of these same youth parents or caretakers never showed an effort to seek advise or recommendations to improve their relationship with them. In my last year of contact with youth (12-17) I attended not less than 4 funeral services - That were 4 too many for me. I thank you for taking the time to take an issue with my prior posting. i rather hear from people like you who appears to have an interest at heart for what is happening to our young people in the community.
being on the otherside of this whole mess i definatly see life as fragle and rethinking my judgements of people ive read about. maybe the reason good hearted kids are in the paper are because they are the targets. think about it, if the good kids don't know what evil is and think that bad things cant exist near them. (becuase they have been conditioned around good) then they never see it coming and do not know how to minimize the risk. the good hearted kids are ingnorant of the fact, hell i was ingnorant of the fact. i had a temper on the road when someone was being an [bleep] hole to me. i would flip them off, even with shootings resuting from road rage being published in the papers, but i never thought it could happen to me. im now aware that it happens to those who have this mindset.
Hi, Trevor: This is your Aunt Net. I'm so sorry you have to take on the burden of defending Matt against stupid people who think they are immune to senseless violence found EVERYWHERE in this world -- not just in SOMEONE else's neighborhood. I love you, your mom, dad, and everyone else in the family.
To you ignorant, hateful folks: You contribute to hate and violence in this world. Do you REALLY want it to end or do you just want to point a finger at someone else? Stop the hate, and commit yourselves to DOING something NOW to help stop senseless violence and death.
i am sitting here in tears reading the things you people are writing
you disgust me
Fist of all, Matt was one of the most deserving people out there. he had the biggest heart, and was extremely honest, he never had anything to hide and loved his life, family and friends.
you people are calling him a drug dealer. do you KNOW what a drug dealer is?
were in f*ing 2009, i work at a professional job through out the week, and i cannot name one person that does not smoke pot. i also work at a restaurant on the weekends, and half of us come to work high. i'm not saying this justifies the use of an "illegal" drug but its really not what you people are making this.
the fact is ton's of us matt's age have been spending the last almost 2 weeks devastated over matts death. can you even imagine what his family is feeling? yet you are talking to his brothers like this is a college debate about gay rights.
and if you wanna play the race or sterotype card, i can tell you, close to every single person at matt's funeral and memorial were white.
matthew WAS an innocent victim in this case and what happened was tragic. so maybe you should stop the ridiculously rude comments, and show his family support, because they are great people too.
I can name quite a few people that do not smoke pot, so we are obviously in different circles. I always find it funny when people break the law or just do not respect it they try to rationalize it. Laws are laws are laws. This young mans death is unfortunate BUT he was old enough to know what he was doing and I am sure that he knew it was not without risk. You play you pay....that is the way life works. Tell me... had this been a kid who lived on Sycamore, maybe not from the same home life as Mr.Butler, would you still feel it was an unnecessary loss?????
and i bet you can name a few that smoke.. should they be murdered ? selling pot might get you a slap on the wrist as for breaking the law. from your post, i see that you say nothing about the 3 that set this kid up, and killed him.. guess what, they were also smoking pot, should they get the death penalty for it.. NO, but they should get it for armed robbery and murder.
all loss of life due to violence is an unnecessary loss. look what happens in e.oakland and the iron triangle / richmond and the portrero projects.. killings all the time, primarily black on black. its the facts, and in this case, 3 blacks are going to jail for a long long time for murder.
Smoking or dealing pot certainly shouldn't warrant a death penalty. However, dealing drugs (yes pot is a drug) does put a person in a dangerous situation, as they are often targets of desperate people who know they have drugs and money. Just like riding a motorcycle shouldn't warrant a death penalty, but it does increase the chances of something bad happening to you. One just has to know the risks involved with an activity.
A life for a life. the kid that did the shooting should be given the same sentence as matt. he should not be allowed to see another day. black or white, a life is precious and he obviously doesn't value anyone else's life but his own. he shouldn't waste anyone's tax dollars by sitting in jail the rest of his life.
I knew Matt through mutual friends, he was a very nice guy and "deserving what he got" isn't the way to put things. I wish he could have understood the risks he was taking when he made the decisions that he made. All that is left for us "friends" to do, instead of blabbing and pointing fingers, is to make sure we don't fall victim to such preventable circumstances. I strongly disagree with the mother who posted that all of us smoke or deal, regardless of if our parents know or not, thats just an idiotic statement or she's just trying to make up for something. Parents like that are the ones who have these tragic stories to tell. What happend to him was horrific and we shouldn't talk about it so lightly, but when I heard he was shot at the park, I knew what had happend at that point, it was very predictable. Don't let your kids get involved in that and posting that makes other parents think"why even try?". I hope we all can take something form this and not let his death be meaningless.
NathanScott is absolutely right. The only thing that might make me sleep better at night is knowing that these murderers get what they deserve. A life for a life. My anger and heartbreak towards this situation can't even be expressed into words. Everyone who is saying Matthew got was he deserves is just a [bleep] hypocrite. You all must be such saints to have never made a mistake in your life. I'm going to use an example Trevor told me. If you broke Matt up into 10 pieces, 9 of those pieces would be full of goodness. Just that last piece still had maturing, was still making wrong decisions, which is OKAY because he was 18 years old. I doubt the same thing could be said for the other 3 men involved. In no way does what happened to him define him at all. He found good in everything and everyone. His love for life was contagious, and there is no doubt in my mind that he would of grown into an amazing man. And if you think this doesn't have to do with race, stop [bleep] kidding yourselves and don't act like you weren't surprised when you found out they were black. It's nearly impossible to not be racist. And racism goes all types of ways my friends. I'll show respect where respect is deserved, that's all there is to it. My heart sincerely goes out to every single family involved in this. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone. There's just no sense in tip toeing around facts. Matt was my best friend, and the pain resulting from this is crippling. I miss him more every single day, and this is a tragic tragic situation. Trevor is doing amazing on this forum dealing with all the negativity. Let Matt rest in peace. One love.
Like the young man from Danville there seems to be some small amount of dealing with pot. This in itself is not that high a risk but once you deal with young black males the risk goes way up for violence. Kids in the suburbs dont deal ANY drugs but if you do dont buy or sell with kids from the hood.
Everyone is going too far with this. A boy was KILLED. He is gone and the family now suffers for it, why do you make them suffer more with your ignorance? They lost a loved one and you want to say, thats what he gets? Or blame it on race? Thats ridiculous. Who, in their right mind, wants to be a statistic? What african american wakes up saying, "i'm going to go kill today because i am black & stats show I will before a white guy will"? This is stupid. Maybe people should be mourning the boy, showing their condolences to the family that has lost someone special. It is apparent that the family READS these posts, so why would anyone post something saying thats what this boy gets? Everyone makes mistakes in their lives, that does not mean they should lose their life over it. You should really think about what you post, and how it will affect the family before you just talk out of your [bleep].
To kill. It is a fact. Ignoring statistics does nothing to change this. If the govenrment said car XYZ performed poorly in side impact crash statistics you would be ok with this data but using stats to show patterns of behavior is somehow racist. Numbers dont lie and they are not racist.
Even black people bemoan the killimg of young black men at the hands of other young black men. Are you saying this is not true?
What I am saying is this isn't about statistics. What I am saying is the stuff people are leaving on here is horrible. If a child, brother, sister, or whatever, some time of relative died, it would not be fair to sit here and bash on them. A boy made a mistake and lost his life for it; the race being besides the point! He is gone, people were punished for a horrible crime. Why can't anyone let the family pick up the pieces and try to mend it back together without others saying, "thats what you get!" or having dumb arguments about race. He didn't die because he was white, just like the others didn't kill because they were black. I'm not defending them, they deserve to be punished but no one deserves to have people say they commited a crime because of their skin color. When a person dies, why continue to focus on the negative things they have done? It's apparent he did make a mistake, one mistake amoung tons of good things. You wouldn't want someone you loved dearly to be remembered for their negative aspects would you? This is not about race. IT IS NOT ABOUT RACE. It is about the life lost by ignorance.
This is horrible and my heart goes out to the family of the victim. But there is a leson here and to not learn it means it will happen again. WE had almost the exact same situation happen here in Danville early this year. It was a black kid from Oakland that shot and killed an unarmed small time pot delaer (aledged). When these naive suburb kids decide to deal with kids from the hood they are putting themselves in a much more dangerous situation. The game changes and they dont understand this. Life to kids in the hood means nothing. We see this on the streets of Oakland and Richmond almost every single day. This is the lesson so naive suburb kids dont get killed. Both of these kids would still be alive if they understood this. Maybe some other kids can learn from this and learn. I am not saying this is nice but it is a fact. Race is a factor and the statistics (that you know are true) bear this out.
Good lord, you act as if the boy was selling coke to a 12 year old. He did not deserve to die over this small crime. Jailtime? Probably, in fact it probably would have scared him right out of it. But he didn't even get the chance to. I'm not saying people who comit crimes should NOT be punished. I'm just saying he didn't deserve this. And if it were your family member, you would not want people who know nothing about him or his life saying such horrible things about your deceased loved one. Keep your negative personal thoughts to yourself, but misery does love company doesn't it?
How many people will be killed by a serial killer? The number is extremely small. Now how many will be killed in our inner cities? The math works. Of course you can spend your time worring about being killed by a serial killer but the sheer number will tell you that is a waste of time.
Serial killer tend to be white males. I say this and noone will call me a racist even though it is a race based statement. Why is that?
Why are you so fixated on race? You offer nothing in the way of solution other than your desire that minorities stay away from you and that they are "stupid" because of who they vote for.
You have provided your views virtually HUNDREDS of times now. Readers now know that you believe that Blacks are responsible for practically all violent crime. You cite your DOJ statistics (ignoring socio-economic facts) constantly and everyone GETS THE FACT that you believe Blacks are bad people. You've stated it on threads that are about Blacks killing Blacks or Whites or members of other races and you have even gone to the trouble of bringing it up when it has NOTHING to do with the topic at hand.
Can you PLEASE just let it go? Take up gardening... Ride a bike... do something other than repeat the same vitriol over and over and OVER...
The details of this case are VERY similar to a case we had in Danville early this year. White kid, small time pot dealer, gets involved with kiids from the hood. He is then shot.
There is a lesson here and it is not just about pot.
There are kids that can be saved from this tragedy.
I've been following this thread and it has gotten off topic very many times.
There was a child killed over pot. He will be missed. He is obviously very loved. My heart goes out to Matts family and friends.
I have a teenage daughter. I live with the fear that all parents in Antioch have to live with. The streets are dangerous. They have been for a long time. All we can do is try to keep our kids informed and off of the streets. But unfortunatly we cant be with them every day 24 hours.
I'm another one who says marajuana needs to be legalized. Lets take weed out of the underground economy. Would this have happened if you could walk into the store and buy a bag? Maybe, but not too many people are being jacked for their vodka.
Regarding the kids who did the violence, I am happy to hear that they will be tried as adults. Maybe there will be some justice.
And for the father who posted a few times, the one who's daughter was shot 3 years ago. My sympathy to you and your family. I can imagine that the sense of loss never truely goes away.
And, again, I am very sorry for the loss of this young man. I read what someone posted from his myspace. He sounds like a great kid. It looks like Antioch lost a kid who would eventually grow up and become a vital part of our community. Its a loss for us all. Blessings to Matts family. May you find peace.
i would say this.. im not sure people grieving should be reading blogs. there was a seperate area for condolences and the such..
this is a story that affects the people of CCC, Antioch.. not just the family.. all families. It has affected you and I. this is a story of not just matt, not just the 3 that jacked him and murdered him, but violent youth in general, drugs, knowing what you are getting yourself into, parenting, lack of parenting, race differeces, race similarities, lots of issues, that is why it struck a nerve, some may have learned something, others nothing. At least people can put their feelings out.
just my 2 cents..
matt, i never knew you, rest in peace young man.. to the 3 that did this .. let justice be served, twice..
the mother [bleep]s didnt have to shoot him. matt was outnumbered 2 to 1. they could have easily just beaten him up and taken what they wanted instead of killing him.

a pure set up.. these thugs (black) .. dont give me the racist crap either.. just the facts. robbing dealers has been going on forever in oakland, sf, richmond, etc... these are some violent times, guns on 16 and 17 yr olds... sympathy goes out to the family for their loss. now watch these defendants all plead not guilty and public tax money used to defend them. we have the death penalty USE IT.. dont let the bad guys be the only ones using it.

I thought Willianson Ranch Park was off Lone Tree across from Wal-Mart?? Isn't that where this happened?

Yes, Williamson Park is right across the street from the Antioch WalMart. Deer Valley High School is right down the street, not Antioch High.

To compare the two like this is simply false.

I am so very sorry for your loss.

whether the kid was selling weed or not.

The kid was white and shot by a black thug.

It hurts to know that some people honestly don't care about the life of a good guy.

accually knowing him he did not know what he was getting into. he just did what most ppl do got comfortable and pushed his luck. this is hard to say being his brother and all. but he did not deserve this, he is not a drug dealer in the sense that he knows the game. if he did this would not have happened.
the fact is three guys too advantage of his nieveness, and anyone who take advantage of someone at the cost of that person (yes im including banks and corporate greed too) is not a humanbeing but scum.
i love matthew very much and it hurts to see everyone talk about him as if he was an object and not one of us. what if it was your kid, same situation, would it be different. the answer is YES.
may matthew rest in peace.

He got caught in something he did not understand. He was NO THREAT to anyone though. He was not a person that was going to shoot anyone. These thugs that killed him are all too common. They are human time bombs. There is a fairly accurate way to detect them but if you do so you are a racist.

This town is getting worse year after year.
RIP Matt.

God Bless You.

Who I'd like to meet: I'd like to meet a girl who understands life. If this is you and you already know me then I guess I dont know you well enough, so we should talk more.

as I read these comments Im kinda shocked.

Sadly the 7 years of scouting did not much for this youth. He died as a result of a
"drug deal going bad"? He was according to the news reported the Drug Dealer.
And the adults in his house did not know about his "business"? He already did
some "business" with one of the soon-to-be felons earlier in the day.
What surprises me is that in the last 3 years of crime in our city involving youth
every one involved in "drugs" and winds-up dead or guilty of a felony is always
mentioned as a good-kid at heart (see the story about the WC murder just reported in the Times - The "kid" accused of the crime had turned to God)
Evidently God is not listening to these "good-hearted-kids" anymore.

so for the millions of people smoking pot, who do you think they get it from ... dealers.. arnold is even considering legalizing it (although not yet ) its called supply and demand.. if nobody wanted it, then nobody would be selling it, and there is lots of demand. the penalty for selling pot is minor, not the DEATH PENALTY. it was a premeditated crime..
so you made your opinion known about the kids selling it, what is your opinion of the people who commited this MURDER., who set this kid up ? premeditated..
this was a kid with a job, can you say that about the murderers, a kid going to school, can you say that about the murderers, a kid with goals, you know the rest...
the 14yr old robber the other day.. did a white kid with pot make him commit armed robbery ?
who should we put the blame on for that ? seems like nobody wants to blame the actual murderers for this.. it was a flat out robbery that turned into murder. they wanted something without not paying..or working for it.. low life thugs

Stop the hate, and commit yourselves to DOING something NOW to help stop senseless violence and death.

i am sitting here in tears reading the things you people are writing you disgust me Fist of all, Matt was one of the most deserving people out there. he had the biggest heart, and was extremely honest, he never had anything to hide and loved his life, family and friends. you people are calling him a drug dealer. do you KNOW what a drug dealer is? were in f*ing 2009, i work at a professional job through out the week, and i cannot name one person that does not smoke pot. i also work at a restaurant on the weekends, and half of us come to work high. i'm not saying this justifies the use of an "illegal" drug but its really not what you people are making this. the fact is ton's of us matt's age have been spending the last almost 2 weeks devastated over matts death. can you even imagine what his family is feeling? yet you are talking to his brothers like this is a college debate about gay rights. and if you wanna play the race or sterotype card, i can tell you, close to every single person at matt's funeral and memorial were white. matthew WAS an innocent victim in this case and what happened was tragic. so maybe you should stop the ridiculously rude comments, and show his family support, because they are great people too.

May you find peace.

well said..
i would say this.. im not sure people grieving should be reading blogs. there was a seperate area for condolences and the such..
this is a story that affects the people of CCC, Antioch.. not just the family.. all families.
