Jeff Tedford is a great football mind, and I agree that the QB position should always be up for competition as it tends to bring out the best in both players. But that has not happened this year. Kevin Riley seems shaken from Tedford's lack of confidence in him to be the sole leader and it is clearly having a marked, negative effect on development. Furthermore, lack of practice time has affected his cohesion with the wide receivers. Moreover, Nate Longshore is nearing the end of his college career and it has been tremendous fall from what looked like a promising career. Nothing better can come out of Tedford's continuing commitment to an open competition week to week, as it hurts the overall team. The QB position is integral part of an offense that has been sputtering; a shame really, since Cal's defense looks tremendous this year.
Riley is his QB of the future, and his skills need to be honed now. He has shown flashes of brilliance, and an arm that Tedford once quoted as the strongest deepball arm he's ever coached; even better than Aaron Rodgers. What Riley needs now is more time under the gun, more experience, room to make mistakes and develop from them, and the full support from his coach and teammates. Just as Longshore had his full seasons to flourish, it is now Riley's time!
Football analysts all agree. Its time for Tedford to commit to Riley.

To So Cal Bear:
Sigh...ditto....
The Shell game of "hide the QB" should end...
IF Riley IS the future, then develop him and his confidence now...
IF Some other QB is the annointed one, ....OH, WELL.....
?Has anyone noticed that since AR left, the QB position has been the fly in the ointment
Ayoub, Longshore, Mixed bag........
time for commitment....

Yes Riley should be the guy and should have been since the start of the season. We may not have had a better record, given the injuries to the OL, but he would be a much more confident and mature player than he is now. It's a shame that Cal always seems to be out of sync in putting together a great team. If we had this years Defense and last years offensive talent or could have kept our OL healthy This year,"we could'a been a contender".
