Truth in advertising? Do car dealers show what happens when the cars break down? Does Kaiser show patients they can't save? Does the Post Office recruiting ad show the Postman being bit by a dog? Does the Nut Creek Chamber show the gas station robbery that happened last week in WC or the pipeline explosion? Some NUT Creek people need to get a life.

Just what America needs, more encouragement to believe that our freedoms are neither worthy of protecting nor in need of protecting. Several thousand years ago the Greeks made exactly that decision and the Romans were only too happy to defeat and enslave them.

These groups make me sick. Are any ads reality. To watch the media and tv adds you would think America is a black nation of very respectable people. Don't we know better. Give me a break.

To term Armed Forces recruitment efforts "propaganda" is disgusting. As for the 50 signatures gathered, who was gathering signatures of patrons who approvethe message? "peace and Justice" used by Leftists isn't factual either, just more high-sounding, empty rhetoric.

Thankfully, these "peacenik" people are in the minority not the majority.
I do question the author of this article and the honesty and integrity of this group collecting signatures. Did the author of this article actually see a list of 50 different signatures that this organization allegedly turned into the management of the theater?
As for the target audience of the Military. By military rules, you need to be a certain age to enlist and there is a maximum age that one can enlist by for all occupations within the military. Some occupations allow a higher age cap than others, but most (I did not say all), are capped in the 20somethings age group.
I for one don't think our military would be as effective with 80 year old's storming the beaches or, more accurately in this world, fighting in the jungles against drug lords in South America, or patrolling the streets of Iraq or Afghanistan.
Every single company in this country has a target audience. Just because Mr. Sterling does not agree with something, does not mean we all have to jump on the bandwagon, nor does it mean that this newspaper/website needs to advertise the opinion of allegedly 51 people in such a prominent place over the voice of the rest of the 60k people living in Walnut Creek. I happen to disagree 100% with Mr. Sterling and his organization.

I recently cancelled my subscription to the Times. I have a month or two left before my subscription runs out and stories like this are a reminder of how wise my decision was. How a few quacks get a page 1 story for their ranting is beyond me.

"The ads supposedly don't give an accurate picture of what its like to be in the military"? This coming from a sissified group of wussies who would rather give their own ass-es to the enemy rather than fight. The military is not for everyone, and that obviously would apply to these pansies. The military wants a loyal team of dedicated men and women who love their country and who, understanding the dangers in the life of a soldier, are willing to answer the call to duty. Some people are really not worth fighting for.

These ads dont belong in movies! Why should they be trying to ad our sons to the oil war. All you people who are angry need to vote D not R. All the repukes do is take from us and take from irag. Open your eyes people!!! Bush caused EVERYTHING including 9/11 INSIDE JOB! Time to stop being sheep in walnut creek and look at whats really going on. Take your rich WC money and do something worthy with it. Not supporting Repukes and there oil wars.

We just need to reinstitute "Selective Service" so that these offensive recruiting tactics become unnecessary -- that way every youth can participate equally in maintaining our Constitutional Republic, regardless of political party affiliation, race, gender, religion, etc. -- even you!
I did, but voluntarily.

Given your screen name, I will assume that you were a submariner, which means that you had to demonstrate a superior intellect. Of course, having read starbuck's post I already figured that you were better educated and more intelligent than (s)he is. I am a huge fan of mandatory service, but would propose that it be extended beyond military service, say into the fire departments, ambulance services, town/county/state/federal skill development positions, etc. I see a minimum 24 month public service obligation for all able-bodied citizens, who could then qualify for federal student loans, federally guaranteed housing loans, and pretty much any other federal or state tax-funded benefit. Those with disabilities would be exempt from mandatory service, but would still be able to vollunteer and would be eligible for the tax-funded benefits in any event.
As to the argument that the recruiting advertisement should be removed, I have enough faith in our youth to be able to determine if it is something that they would be interested in. If the business wants to refuse it, fine, else shut up and don't worry about it.

Thank you, Sir, -- and your assumption is correct -- Diesel Boats Forever!
Submarines during the Cold War for me ('61 - '64), then Plankowner of BoatRon 1 (SwiftBoats) through '66, and former skipper of PCF #3, one of the first two SwiftBoats in service in RVN, PCF #4 being my sister boat. Imagine that -- a UCBerkeley grad in the early '60's joining the Navy instead of the enlightened -- heresy!!
Couldn't agree with you more on the purpose, benefits, breadth, and need for a National Service commitment, one more inclusive than just military -- and, believe it or not, even Honesty 1,2, and 3, or whichever persona he/she presently enjoys, had expressed the same conclusion a year or so ago; but I don't look for similar sense from MedaWhite/Warhater, as he's far too self-absorbed. He would do well to look for worldview guidance at the exemplary youngsters presently in our Armed Services, rather than the Code Pinksters.

I like how some of you are calling people wussies for wanting the ads removed, but then you're here complaining about it like it's one of the most offensive ideas you've ever heard of (and you still use words like wussies). There's more important things out there than whether the military has ads or not. A movie theater ad shouldn't effect your decision one way or another about whether or not you want to join the miltary.
