What about Frank Alloco for consideration

There is zero doubt in my mind he'll make a great, not good, great college coach. He's consistantly won wherever he's been and he wins by forcing his players to play hard nose defense.

If Cal truly wants to win, they'd hire him. He really is the best coach out there hands down.

Maybe some Cal fans should approach Frank and ask him if he would be interested? He is a heck of a coach. Now is the time, as there will be a mad rush of applicants once word gets out the position is open.

I don't know if Alloco should make that big a jump. A more logical process would be:

St. Mary's Randy Bennett takes the Cal Job.

DVC's Steve Coccimiglio takes the vacated St. Mary's Job.

De La Salle's Frank Alloco takes the vacated DVC job.

College Park's Kyle Campanelli takes the vacated De La Salle job.

All we have to do is fill the vacated College Park job. It's an easier process if you look at it that way. Is Doug True available? Hey, maybe Tom Gilbert would make a fine College Park basketball coach!

Seriously, I would accept a quick hire of Montgomery, but if it's anybody else, I think it would be better to take some time and do a national search. Howland came to UCLA from Pittsburgh, so there could be someone like that we are not familiar with that would bring some East Coast brand of knock-em-Sock-em basketball to Haas Pavillion. If Braun took a year off, and just switched places with Montgomery taking over for him in the booth, that would be fine with me though.

Perhaps the public wouldn't be too receptive to Allocco at first, until he brings Cal back to the promise land. He is a better coach than any of the aforementioned coaches. I've seen it firsthand. People really don't know just how talented a coach he really is. I honestly believe he's as good as Howland at UCLA.

Like I said, if Cal actually wants to win now, hire Allocco, if they want to please the public, hire the mediocre Mike Montegomery.

It won't work BJ. Campanelli already stepped down at CP, and isn't looking for additional time commitments. I did think of Coccimiglio for the Cal job, but I like the St. Mary's slot. Didn't he used to coach the St. Mary's women's team, or was that his brother?

Anyway, Alloco has shown interest previously in the St. Mary's job, and his son Frank Jr. played there for 4 years in the 90s, so he does have ties to the program. I don't know if Frank would consider the DVC job, as he probably makes more at DLS and has a pretty nice gig there. But for the sake of your scenario, let's say he goes for it. That could all work, but you'll need to find someone else to take over at DVC. Maybe Gilbert, and then True could take over at CP?

Bennett would be an excellent candidate for the Cal job, but the St. Mary's alumni aren't going to let go of him without a fight. Time to up his contract value Gaels before he bolts for the PAC 10 like the last couple of coaches who have done well in Moraga.

Fair enough about Alloco. I only saw him coach once against Newark. I sat pretty far away, but noticed he was really into the game and I'm sure he's a fine coach. There was an article in the paper about how Gladstone took his time before hiring Tedford. Maybe the other Bennett, Tony, although he's got a good thing going where he's at might be interested? He's still playing basketball. Aren't they playing NC right now? If he wins, they might let Roy Williams go and make him an offer to coach the Tarheels.
