  • I stream video of myself flossing in the morning!
  • I feel fine about targeted ads with my search results

Here's how Jackie Burrell's "Facebook members poke back" article begins:

Virtual blow-up dolls, Disney princess quizzes, chitchat -- that's the whimsical blend Facebook users have come to expect. So it sounded harmless enough when the social networking site announced earlier this month that it was offering a new "feature" that would "bring actions you take outside of Facebook back in."

What the site didn't explain is that the Beacon feature would track purchases on other Web sites and then broadcast that information to people's friends. [...]
